Posting this now because a new BIOS update came out that improves mem OC so this is probably already outdated info. I've not tested the new BIOS yet.

Tested the F6c on the Z690 Aorus Elite and it trains higher frequencies automatically, but memory performance is worse than F6a bios at the same settings, 4% average drop in aida, 3% on linpack xtreme gflops, reverted to the F6a for now.

@@cliche_AF Gigabyte page says that "When running XMP at DDR4 3200 MHz or higher, the system's stability depends on the CPU’s capabilities." probably because the official intel frequency is 3200, msi is just doing the same it seems.

Well, my 3600 kit only works with two of the four sticks using BIOS F6c. Either there's still an issue with this new BIOS or my 12900K's memory controller sucks.

Thanks for buying my RAM! Glad you put it to good use. I used it for a long time around 3-4 years. From X99 through 1st and 2nd gen ryzen to X299 where I needed faster RAM. It wouldn't go past 3800Mhz on X299 Dark so replaced it with Viper Steels and they are doing what I wanted.

My first foray into ram overclocking was on boards that had neither post codes or safe boot. I changed one timing at a time and saved my settings in a profile, and also wrote them down. I had an old case switch connected to my CMOS jumper and would hit that when new settings didn't work. Damned slow compared to how I do it now with my Z490 Apex, but was a good learning experience.

So did Gigabyte eventually get a good bios to make it decent for DDr4 memory overclocking or is it still better to go with your original recommendation of getting the MSI Z690-A? I love me a Post Code but not if memory OC is poor due to sub par bios.

A bit late but it's a fucking mess. I swapped to a gigabyte board from MSI z690-a, don't... Training issues still on latest.. when you know how to handle it it's easier. Also good boards if you don't go for max overclocks. I had to settle for 3900 cl14 with 4 8gb sticks, could do 4266 with 2 sticks. Took me many days before i realized my RTL's can't be locked even if it's the same values. Stops training.

Bz is taking things as far as they will go, hence the issues. With a modest overclock, it is set and forget. But modern parts don't have much headroom so I don't think its worth anymore either. I used to run an OC'd Sandy Bridge though that saved me countless hours thanks to the extra speed.

I bought a Z390 AORUS Pro WiFi mainly because of what you said. At the time I didn't know that it was not so great for RAM overclocking. I was very frustrated at first because I couldn't get it over 3866 stable and I almost messaged you personally just to see if you had any tricks up your sleeve. I had G-Skill 3200cl14 b-die on an A0 PCB that wouldn't go above 3866. That kit was supposed to be mine but my friend wanted it back so I bought F4-4000C18Q-32GTZKW on an A2 PCB off the QVL. I think possibly the PCB was the big difference. Most people seem to have trouble going above 3,600 or 3866, however I am able to boot into Windows and run a stress test at 4400 MHz. It's not stable but not terribly so. I might have needed more voltage. I haven't really messed around with it a whole lot because it's not practical and I was fine with 4,000 16-16-16-28 which is fully stable with super tight secondaries and tertiaries. 4200 is stable at 16-18-18-36. I have ran TM5, OCCT, and HCImemtest for many hours to make sure. I actually posted with 4533, which doesn't even sound believable, especially if you have used that board lol. If you would like some screenshots or something for verification let me know. What I think is weird is I have an easier time posting at 4200 or 4266 than at 4000 or 4133. Even 4400 is easier to post. It seems like for 4000 to post I need more VCCIO but once it does I can lower it back down and it's stable.

I was o'cing bdie on z490 and had lots of problems with rtls and iols. They would work sometimes and other times they would be very far from each other / more than 2. So the memory controller isn't good enough for my timings and my memory is unstable. What I did was enable fast boot turning it on and off and leaving it on when it trained properly. Making the settings stuck like that. Bit dodgey I think. It did pass memtest over 600%. I will go back soon and redo my whole ram oc.

"For latency" 8gbit B-Die "high clocks" 8gbit B-Die and 8git Rev. E As for kits, Idk, your best bet would probably be whatever has the lowest XMP latency, since that'll tend to be the best bin. Something like G.Skill's 4000 14-15-15 or 4800 17-19-19. Why you'd spend hundreds of dollars for a maybe ~2% perf improvement, however, is probably the more serious question here.

@@IK4MS gotcha well with my kit it's buttery smooth on my os load times are good I just like that. only spent 200 for my 32gb kit so great price 😎 think for my next build I'll go for the 4800mhz cl17 range. Yeah the thing with that 2% it makes a difference with studder and smoother operations. when it's not that way it's laggy janky and untuned, like a sloppy mess of wires that get the job done. but alot of ways to not get the information quick enough... so that's why it's worth it.
