I have my 5900x overclocked slightly and undervolted with an offset of -0.2, it benchmarks a few percentage higher (not too concerned about getting the best of the best) and runs substantially cooler. With a Noctua D15s (and all my case fans at 40%) the highest I've seen it peak is 75°c (the joys of booting up) but in a render benchmark 63°c is more realistic and a 37/8°c idle.

I upgraded from a 95w CPU to this 241w 12900k and the temps are insane even on intel spec/defaults. I went into BIOS and adjusted an offset of -0.150v and it decreased temps by 20 degrees C. I thought that 241w would be okay as long as I dont OC, but firing up a game on stock settings and it's spiking to 90s. >_< Thanks for this undervolt walkthrough...

Ty , i tried here with an off set of -0.130v using the same progam as the video, and temp drop from 100 to 82-79 in cinebench, test a bit in cod and it seems good, temp drop from avg 60 to avg 52 same perfomance , will test more in the week to see if it Crash or something.

What I did was leave the cpu core voltage to "Auto", then set the core voltage mode to "adaptive" with negative offset.

you can also "underclock" it from Power options on windows. From there Change advanced power settings> Processor power management> Maximum processor state and change it from 100 to 99. i think its basically the same as underclocking or volting idk could be wrong. Also do it at ur own risk, had it for 1 year on and no problems doe so its not risky or anything imo, just saw someone say its risky changing those kind of settings which i dont agree with. Simply revert if u have issues.

i'm glad you made an undervolting guide for 12th gen. I find undervolting is very useful for quite a few instances. TLDR: it's great for thermal throttling, If breakers flip on the circuit under load, and keeping closed areas cooler. One was my first gaming laptop was running really hot and starting to thermal throttle. Undervolting allowed it to stay cool and maintain turbo performance instead of throttling. Last time, was when my latest build kept flipping a breaker under load. Actually both my desktops have UPS's bc breakers flip and interrupt what I'm doing and cause potential data corruption. I have to undervolt my desktop, everytime people start running heaters to keep breakers from flipping. It's helpful in hot weather to undervolt or turn down the power limit on your GPU in MSI Afterburner to keep it from pumping unnecessary heat into the room. (Same applies for CPU undervolt)

Set a static voltage - about 1.3 volts or less, then use negative curve optimiser and the per core boost optimisation - you should gain more performance. In terms of temps, you can set the temp wall to 70 degrees c.

Undervolted my 5600x from 4.6ghz 1.36v stock to 4.6ghz at 1.18v and took off about 15 degrees Celsius and allows me to run my pc quieter than before as fan curve is less aggressive. Only hits about 65 degrees max in cinebench r23 at roughly 80 watt power draw and 55 degrees while gaming.

Great video, this is exactly what I saw with my 12900K. Peak watt usage went down to 185W, and temps are now in the 75C range on R23 runs. 240AIO. Same issue with just bumping up a 100mhz though, but I haven't really explored bumping up volts again to overlock it, since CPU is so fast already, there is no need.

There is not a huge amount of info out there on the two... But I believe Jay actually may have the interpretation of VID slightly wrong - I believe VID is what the cpu core is actually asking for, rather than the voltage being supplied, and VCORE is the actual voltage provided by the motherboard.

Every Intel PC I've built i have found default voltage on CPU to be unnecessarily high and find i often get better performance lowering it. I assume that the stock voltage is just a safe voltage for compatibility reasons, but with good parts you usually can lower it unless you're going with crazy overclocking. Good to see this is still fairly similar with newer generations too. I'm however thinking of going Zen4 with my next PC and it's been like 15-20 years since I built an AMD system. I'll likely do no OC'ing at first but curious how AMD differs these days when it comes to OC'ing and all.

AMD has pretty good auto OC, it's 95% better than most OCs (because the clocks can boost certain cores higher than an all core overclock) Best way to get more performance on normal air coolers is normally undervolting, because lower temps -> cores can boost higher A good video to watch on this is *"PBO overclocking - absolutely worth it"*

yeah stock voltage is typically based on an average although intel's stock voltage is more varied based on die quality(?) while AMD just uses a hard number. for example 3k series was just a straight 1.35v for all cpu's(can't remember what 1k/2k series was anymore). with AMD there's zero reason to manually overclock.. just try to keep the temps as low as possible and let the cpu handle the rest.

The stock voltage has to be high enough to accommodate all wafer-to-wafer, chip-to-chip variance for the expected lifetime of those chips. Depending on silicon lottery, you may be able to get away with a 60mV under-volt today but need to reduce it to 40mV a few years down the road while another chip may only be able to get a 30mV under-volt out of the box.

D15 was able to handle a 5950X for me, I eventually got the parts for my water loop but while I was verifying my system stability it ran on a D15 and it still kept the CPU under control temp wise. Noctua really did their homework on that cooler.

Then run stabilty tests, put it -0.010V lower, rinse and repeat. I run my i7 7700K at -1.165 offset voltage absolutely stably with over -10c drop in temperature [can't remember exactly how much, think it was more].

Good to see someone addressing undervolting rather than overclocking. While I have overclocked some AMD APUs, I generally have no interest in overclocking, but reducing voltage/heat has many benefits, including allowing higher multi-core turbo speeds, lower operating and cooling costs, and less fan noise. @@MikeE_wf Generally, no, the typical point of undervolting is to lower the power/heat while maintaining the same clock speeds. However, there are instances where people have deliberate lowered clock speeds because they didn’t need maximum speed, only lower power/heat or longer battery life. There are also cases, as with many of the older AMD K10 APUs where you could lower the voltage for idle clock speeds, while increasing the “non-boost” and “boost” clock speeds without raising the voltage (or even slightly lowering voltage), giving better performance with the same or less heat/power usage. In short, there is a whole spectrum of things you can/could do. Newer CPUs give you much less control over these things.

This reminds me of when I was trying to push my 6900xt. I OC'd Mhz & Ram, Cranked of Power Limit, & Turned up the fans. Got a very respectable Time Spy score but it was loud and hot. Finally hit reset & just started from scratch and undervolted, ended up dropping Mv down 75 and got nearly the exact same Time Spy score and dropped the Temps 10C. Lesson learned always undervolt first.

Holy Hannah Jay. I’ve been struggling for over a month with a Gigabyte Aorus Z590 Pro AX and an 11600k. Could’t control temps or voltages on this board. It was almost like the board was ignoring me. Very, very frustrating experience with this Gigabyte bios, and yes, the latest. Finally gave up using the bios and instead chose to use XTU. Finally I have control over voltage and temps. I don’t know what I missed in the Gigabyte bios, but at one point the board was throwing over 1.6v into the 11600k. Performance was dismal. Using XTU SOLVED THE PROBLEM. I am still using adaptive voltage, but have undervolted by 200mv in order to get the voltage I desired (1.26 to 1.28 under 100% load)

Nice video! This information could be helpful to a lot of folks. Undervolting earlier could have saved me $150. I went from a Dark Rock Pro 4 to a AIO 360 and also bought the Thermalright Intel12 generation CPU bending correction kit. I was astonished to see my temps were still getting up to ~95C and the CPU would periodically throttle during a Cinebench R23 loop. Using XTU to take .1 off of the core voltage worked flawlessly. Now the max my CPU P-Cores get to is ~79C and XTU never reports any thermal throttling during a 30 minute stability test of Cinebench R23.

I was able to do it on my i7 10750h laptop. It made a significant difference. Brought temps down 10-13c with a -0.110V core voltage offset. Now I have a i7 12700k pc 4070 ti pc I built and the thing runs so cool I dont need an undervolt but I did a very mild Undervolt anyway at -0.075v. I can get it to -0.180v stable It's rediculous how cool my temps are when gaming and my performance. Cpu never goes above 50c under load and on idle is low 20s and my gpu tops out at 50c under load and idles around 28c. I have 1440p hdr 144hz monitor with freesync and I top out no issues in any game max settings and 144fps barely works my gpu and cpu. I couldnt be happier with my build and the air cooler I got for my cpu is just fantastic. Arctic Freezer Duo esports 34 cooler. That thing is a beast!

Jay, thank you so much for this guide. With you help I was able to get my 12900K system down from 425-450 watts at load, ( with the fans just screaming ) to 300-285 watts under load. I had to take away some of the over clock ( I had to set to 5.5GHz ), but at 5 GHz the system still is awesome. ( and as an added bonus the radiator fans no longer spin up to loud levels ) I'm much happier with my system now, as power consumption is an issue for me. ( I run my system on solar / batteries, and now the system won't completely deplete my solar rack mount batteries overnight ) . Thanks again for a much needed guide. In an era where energy costs are going up daily, it was really nice to find a guide with a method to conserve some of my power.

Oh, almost forgot. My ASUS Hero Z690 motherboard had the voltage at 1.382. ( which was actually around 1.425 volts as measured with HW monitor ) I was able to get it down to 1.235. :-)

Thank you very much for this video, I use an i9 10900k water cooled, my temps would reach upper 90's and 100's then would throttle when playing BF 2042 or UBoat. I followed your video and undervolted - 0.150, ran the games and temps have dropped to no higher than 75's, brilliant.. ive since had to readjust to -0.100 because would crash after 30 mins or so of gaming ,this has solved it and now runs perfectly and 75's temps.. 4:00 cars with catalytic converters need to alternate between rich and lean to prevent their catalytic converters from clogging up: the extra oxygen from lean phases is needed to burn off captured hydrocarbons and monoxides from rich phases. This is where closed-loop EFI using exhaust O2 sensors come in to adjust fuel trims in real-time. The only time these should run rich is the first 10-30 seconds until O2 sensors reach operating temperature.

I undervolted my 8086k and overclocked it. Got it down to 1.295v for a 5ghz all core oc. Managed to do 5.2ghz at 1.37v. That extra 100mhz like Jay says needs a ton more voltage for me. Didnt want to push it so far but undervolting was definitely worth it.

Undervolting is the most amazing thing I discovered. I saw my 5900X getting warmer than I'd like with the air cooler, so I decided to give it a try. Lo and behold I must have won the silicon lottery because I was able to cut the voltage almost in half and still have the stability I needed. Now with a Noctua U12S and good airflow case I get high 50s/low 60s doing cinebench, which is the most stress I'll put my CPU under even when doing more programming related tasks

That's crazy. You got a good CPU for sure. But yea I'd say every CPU has quite a bit of headroom with lowering voltage. Most people still don't touch settings like that and having a pc crash because it needs a few mv more is definitely worse for the manufacturer than a bit more efficiency...

Offset voltage clocking is the absolute way forward. Combined with SpeedStep, I can save 5-10 degrees at AVX peak loads and way more on both temps and power consumption at average use or idle. And in these hot days with super expensive electricity tariffs, both are more important than ever. A little tricky (mostly frustrating in terms of the time and reboots involved) when dialing it in on some boards, but definitely worth it.

I was spoiled with temperature sensors in the loop. Have a motherboard with one of those, base the fan speed off that, and you got a system where the fans can ramp up extremely slowly or even not at all since they focus on water temperature and not CPU temperature. Any one component, CPU or GPU(or anything else in the loop for that matter) can run to load and you never have to worry whether or not your fans are responding to the correct component.

I actually keep my 5950x at 1.1V 4.3ghz and I did test it at one point with a little bit lower voltage at 4.4ghz and got to the point where in gaming/benchmarking at max it consumed 70-75 watts and I was pretty impressed but with the 1.1V it typically consumes less than 100 watts and never goes past at the extreme 73C on my air cooler. By keeping your 5950x at that low level 1.1V 4.3Ghz which is great by the way if you are rendering all day long with Vray/Redshift/Arnold/etc. But if you are gaming? By default the CPU it's able to boost 2 cores at 4950-5000mhz. You just destroyed it for gaming purpose. Unless you have a Dark HERO motherboard which is able to switch overlocks. Then yes.

I remember getting a Core 2 Duo CPU that was a mobile CPU but it was still socketed so I could use it in my desktop. I put a top end Swiftech cooler on it and after applying normal desktop voltage on that CPU it allowed me to get some really insane overclocks on it. @@coach- That is a false statement. If done correctly, with undervolting you can get that same or better performance than stock while using less energy and staying cooler. It's just fine tuning to match the voltage to your CPU or GPU. It also depends on the silicon quality of your chip. Some undervolt better than others. For instance my 3090 runs stock 1950 MHz @1.075v (using around 350w) but I undervolt it to .900v @ 1950 MHz (using around 275w) Or I can overclock it to 2050 MHz @ .975v (using around 300w) all while running cooler and using less power.

I have put overclocking features to use on systems more to downgrade a system as a way to buy time on a dying system than I have on overclocking it for better performance but knowing what impacts what is more important to make it easier than trial+error.

I have done this for ages for my Ryzen 5 5600X - essentially disabling boost and running the default core clock (3.7GHz). Then I undervolted and I ran at at 0.78V. Essentially never more than 33C when 100% utilised (Noctua NH-D15, fans at 20-30%). EDIT: This is alsk a very good idea for someone looking for a media station or such - just pop in like a 2060 and underclock and you can pretty much run it all with an SFX 300W PSU if you so desire. Very easy and efficient to run for ages

In BIOS, I set to 4.9mhz, my volts to 1.4, watts limit to 200, and thermal threshold to 80℃. Works like a charm. Super fast but with limits to keep from hitting 1.4 volts, but enough volts to keep stable.

Then you put the magnitude to negative and do it from there, use OCCT and test everytime you change the magnitude from -5, -10, -15, -20,-- 25, -30. Until you see OCCT says error, then you just bump back the magnitude by one and keep checking for instability.

LLC is dependant on CPU/settings. For example (under my understanding) lets say you have a 5Ghz CPU and you run a stress test with 1.45 volts set in the bios. If your voltage readout during the stress test is under/over what you set in the bios, you can then adjust the level of LLC. What youre wanting to do here is to have as close of a value on desktop with load, as what you set via the BIOS.

I have done an undervolt on my Ryzen 5 3600. I had it in a mini-ITX case and it was hitting over 85 degrees. So I looked into undervolting + overclocking, and now I have it running at its advertised highest clock speed and have it undervolted. After doing that it dropped to 65 degrees maximum, even running Cinebench and/or Heaven. And it's cooled off of a single 120mm AIO which contains the only fan in the case. Very happy with that undervolting job and happy that I could still get the overclock on top of it.

thanks for the vid jay, i got my 13600k down from 1.1v to 0.975v, and temps down from 92 celsius to 72 celsius. And it's all stable with Prime for 24hrs. I also used GPU Tweak to set a power limit of 80% on my 4090, which dropped it's temps by 20 degrees celsius as well. Whole system is running so much cooler now with zero throttling.

@@justinward3218 I installed a 13700k in ASUS Z690 2 days ago, had to install a 12th gen Celeron for it to post the i7 after BIOS update. My temps are fine unless I load it up. I peg at 100c in Cinebench all core test, the i7 doesn't fail and HWmonitor says there was NO thermal or power throttling. It was pulling 5.2-5.3Ghz the whole time at 100c on P cores! LOL I watched the whole 9 minute test at 99-100c all P cores, it was terrifying, the aio fans were spinning so fast they sounded like they were going to lift off. The E cores stayed around 86c. But the P cores stayed 99-100c from like 2 seconds in until the end. The i7 scored 30051 and it didn't crash, which is almost dead on spec. I have tried numerous games and the CPU stays around 65c same as my ASUS 3080 at about 65c. So my cooler (ASUS RYUO 240) and thermal paste is doing fine. It only heats up on all core loads. I am hearing MCE might be the issue and undervolting is the way. I am still investigating but saw your post and figured two heads is better than one. LOL

Since it’s not super urgent, I’m going to let it be for the moment while I wait on my thermal paste shipment from Newegg. I looked and looked but couldn’t find my backup tube. I have high hopes that reapplication will be the solution since, as I mentioned, I did the job in a rush and didn’t bother being careful torquing down the heat plate for my pump. I’m running a 360 rad Corsair AIO, and getting expected readings from it except that the fluid is significantly cooler (27-30C at idle)than the chip, again pointing to poor contact being the problem.

I used Corsair TM30 once and MX-4 paste once both with the ASUS Ryuo 240 AIO, same results. My idle is in the mid to low 30's and gaming mid to high 60's. The only time my 13700k gets hot (100c) is in Cinebench. Time Spy, Firestrike and Heaven my temps are high 60's low 70's. honestly if I hadn't checked the temperature on Cinebench I wouldn't have known it was anywhere near 100c because it didn't throttle the performance even though it pegged 100c the entire test. I scored 30051 which is fine for a 13700k on Cinebench. If the cooler wasn't working right I think the chip would have throttled. It wants to be hot. I limited my Delta T to 90 degrees in BIOS. The CPU pegged 90c on cinebench and scored 29885, lower than the 100c score. I set BIOS to enforce all limits on the CPU and it still pegged 100c in cinebench and scored 29974. No throttles at 100c or 90c. My CPU is within a couple degrees of my 3080 when gaming so I am siding on the chip just being a furnace. I am interested in what you find out in your deep dive though, update here if you get a chance. Good luck Justin.

I know this is not a high end pc BUT, Running Lenovo L340 I7 - 9750H Ideapad Stock immediately thermal throttled when gaming. Undervolted CPU -126mV immediately dropped the temp. Overclocked the GTX1650 mobile from 4000mhz to 4558mhz memory clock and and boosted the core clock by +196mhz and now my laptop wont thermal throttle at all with a boost of FPS. Stock, it thermal throttle and cut my CPU to 2600mhz and got a solid 78 FPS sitting at 90 plus degrees. Now my CPU sits at 4067mhz at 76 degrees and my GPU is at 66-71 degrees with fps 108 fps average in PUBG. Very happy with the small mod for such big gains.

The basic limitation of overclocking is "FET gate charge". FETs such as in CMOS (mosfet). The gate which is charged to switch them has to have a minimum charge applied, this takes voltage, current and time. Apparent capacitance. The higher the voltage the faster the gate charges more or less. The rate the gates can charge (or discharge) sets the rising and falling gradients. The rise time or fall time will be a function of the devices clock speed in Hz. Thus, if you raise the clock speed, the maximum gate rise time becomes shorter. Raise it enough and the gates will stop fully charging within the time period, but will probably still work. Raise it further and the gates will still be charging while the cycle completes and corrupt values are encountered. Black screen, reboot. Raising the voltage forces more current to get involved into the gate charging. This shortens the rise time, allowing higher clocks, but at a cost of higher VRM requirements and, of course, more heat.

There are of course many other considerations. In multi die configs these days, the distance (in circuitry length) from the two most distant parts of the CPU are getting close to the speed of light (or rather the speed of the electromagnetic field in silicon/copper). Two operations at opposing ends of the die may not be able to synchronize at higher clocks.

Been undervolting for literally every build years now it helps so much. Always start with undervolt then work from there. Right now currently got two setups. One is my Alienware 51m-R2 w/10700k running 5.2 all core and temps are usually 65c while gaming COD,PUBG, BFV(runs a little hotter) with jumps to 75c but never over. Which i am super impressed with, being a laptop and all. Same goes for gpu 2080 Super never sees over 75c, +150core +1000mem(lil bit of silicone lottery going on, as mine is 2nd highest score on userbenchmark). Has no problem running 27" 1440p/270hz monitor pushing around 200fps. My desktop build is a generation older a 9900k/2080ti and performs pretty much the same with a 5ghz all core overclock(280mm aio and few extra fans). Undervolting is key!

Thanks for reminding me about Clock Tuner for Ryzen. I hadn't played with it since 2.0 came out with Zen 2 support. With some small configurations in BIOS, it set the core frequencies and voltages for the most efficient and optimal use. It basically does it all for you, which is very convenient for people that just want to set it and forget it. My 5800x is almost 1000 points better at Cinebench R23's multi-core load (4.65Ghz), and is 13c cooler (67c down from 81c) on a 1.25mV undervolt.

Thank you so very VERY much for making this video. Just built a new computer. With the limited budget and the parts I already had I still managed to get a 13700 CPU and an RTX4080. Just air cooled though. Running cinebench the CPU hit 100C withing half a minute and was slowed down. Had to do the undervolting in the bios since XTU doesn't support my mainboard, but with just 75mV lower, the highest temp the CPU got to after a full 10 minute run was 93C (91 up to the last 2 minutes...) and down from 237W to 210W Makes a HUGE difference!

My understanding is that individually tuning chips is just not practical at scale. So instead Intel picks one voltage and sets every 12900 to that, knowing that they'll function fine on it. Most chips can work below that, but not all will handle a certain voltage and working out what the lowest possible voltage is is time consuming.

I undervolted my FE 3080 and it's been fantastic. Bascially no fps loss in games and I've dropped 15C on my GPU. 3080 is great for undervolting.

How did you do that? My 3090 FE does not react on V slider at all, I've water cooled it and applied overclock to core clock and ram, but voltage is not controllable.

Just last week I undervolted a Ryzen 5800x that was getting too hot for a customer (92C+). Prebuilt gaming PC used for streaming, the case was small with a cheap air cooler and no mounts for an AIO. Apex still ran at her locked 200fps with no quality loss on stream. So this isn't just an Intel thing.

With MSI motherboards you could also try the CPU Lite load setting. Lowering this value make CPU use less power. Saw some youtube videos (serach for CPU Lite load MSI) with amazing results. Still need to test for stability similar to normal undervolting. Lowering it too much may cause unstability.

Hi Jay. Yes I agree. I have WORLD RECORD using OCCT for speed of Intel 10900k at 5.3ghz all core for avx and 5.5ghz all core sse. Under-volting really helped.

Thank you for this. I was so confused because I built a 12th gen i7 machine and in cinebench23 I was hitting 100c… I have a beefy air cooler, and great fans, and great airflow in general. Thought I mounted things wrong, but everything was perfect. Un did and remounted the cooler a bunch with no changes in temps. I’ll mess with this, and I’ll be happy with low 80s under this kind of load

I have minimal cooling and under volted my Ryzen 5 CPU several months ago. Did it per core and found different cores definitely had different capabilities (Ryzen Master helps tell you which cores can be pushed further). Worth the time. The process got me an extra 400MHz on all core average, while running cooler. One thing I discovered was that stability while idle was more of an issue when under volting. I got great Cinebench scores, but the system would crash when sitting idle for few minutes. Moved the voltages up until the idle was stable (my machine is running 24/7).

I'd rather use the 5 1/4 bay area at the top of the pc to convert into a convection oven. It's the perfect size for a hot pocket so when your CPU is cooking... might as well get something out of it.

I would love a guide on GPU undervolting. My 3070ti is relatively new to me and I’m having trouble figuring out the best options for undervolting in my H510e. I’m also curious, cause I’m not as knowledgeable as I’m sure most people on Jay’s channel: my 3070ti FE usually hits around 81/82c during gaming. Is that something I should worry about in the long run?

I've seen both benchmark and gaming conparisons between 12th gen Intel and it's Ryzen competitors. Seems Intel does get pretty toasty in benchmarks, but there's much less difference under a gaming load. That said, I still went with a 240mm AIO for the i5-12600K I recently built with. Temps aren't bad at all and things are snappier than ever. But, K-sku because I like to fine tune whatever equipment I use.

I bought a gaming laptop towards the start of the pandemic and since then it has been a nightmare of constant thermal throttling and randomly while doing anything the screen will just go black until i force shutdown and restart it. About a week ago i discovered a way to unlock undervolting and it has been an absolute gamechanger. CPU runs like 10c cooler when gaming (from hitting 90c+ instantly to capping around 75-80c), almost never thermal throttles and uses about 15 or so watts less under full load. Best part is when just browsing the web and/or watching youtube my laptop is almost completely silent since it no longer needs to ramp up the fans to 50% to keep it from overheating. Got -125mv core and -85mv cache. I had to use throttlestop because xtu wouldn't let me alter voltages even when enabling it in bios, thankfully i could in throttlestop.

I see what everyone is saying now. I just undervolted my Core i7-5600U on my ThinkPad T450s, and hoo mama! The thermal readings I got under load and on idle *SMASHED* my previous record. Idle was in the mid to low 30's (Celsius), and load was mid to high 40's! For Linux, I used intel-undervolt to decrease power draw on both cores and the GPU by -70 millivolts (mV) and TLP to cap maximum CPU usage at 60%, with 12% being the minimum.

That's insane. Dropping from a load temp of 90+ C to less than 70C is crazy. My 4790K loves undervolting as well though.

@@poopcoolman the one I'm on now isn't that great. I had tried to delid my original 4790K without the proper tools and broke the PCB so I had to replace it with a used 4790K off eBay a few years ago. Anyway, my original 4790K was running at 4.7ghz at 1.150 vcore. This replacement one I'm running at stock 4.4ghz but on all cores at 1.250 vcore. This one didn't like overclocking much more than stock so I just left it there. Edit: the 1.150 vcore on the original 4790K may have been at stock clocks too. I seem to recall I had to bump that a bit for the 4.7ghz OC, but Im not 100% sure. I just remembered running it at both 1.150 vcore and 4.7ghz for a time, but maybe not simultaneously.

@@poopcoolman ok so I decided to take a stab at actually tuning the undervolt of my current 4790K as I never really took the time to dial this one in... I just spent some time with it and I seem to have it stable at stock 4.4ghz all core speed and an undervolt with static voltage (not adaptive) at 1.210 Vcore in the bios which ends up being an actual real vcore of 1.195 in all system reporting tools. Seems stable after load testing and lowered my peak and average temperatures about 7C from the 1.250 actual reported vcore I was running before.

My old 4790K did 4.7 at 1.33v and 4.8 at 1.38v,left it at 4.7 as the 4.8 was a big jump in temps and 100Mhz wasn't worth that extra heat. Could have just also left it at stock with 1.2v as well. Wasn't the best, but was nice to have.

The CO feature on Zen 3 is amazing. I had a 5700g constantly hitting 4.85 and around 10C cooler than stock. It takes some time but its worth it and completely safe. I never touched a single voltage setting with that CPU.

I have a 5800x with most cores running 4.85, one or two took wild voltage to do better than 4.7. It's a great feature and silly easy to do. 4.85 seems to be a limit stop for Ryzen Master though. Never pushed beyond that, just started down volting once it hit that number. Noticed that easily on the two best cores.

@@capnskiddies The limit is the turbo speed + 50 + 200. Example: 5700g does 4.6 turbo. Out of the box it hits 4.65 (+50) and pbo can give another 200 to 4.85. The 5800x can hit 4.95 if I am not mistaken. Edit: The higher clocks you put on overdrive the lesser you get on the curve. If your CPU tries to get 4.9 but the CO is too high it wont have enough voltage to stay stable. Try getting your Curves as best as possible and only then put the clock overdrive in steps of 50 and use it for a couple of days. If ok, add another 50. Having a better CO gives better results than the highest clock possible.

@@MarshallZPie Curve Optimizer. You change the voltage/frequency curve in steps. For example one of your cores hit 4.8 at 1.45V but you can take some steps so it will try to run 4.8 at 1.42V. This keeps the stock behavior and voltages, but you hit higher frequencies which means you get more performance for less voltage. You can also set the Temp Limit to 80C for example and it will never go beyond that, it will downclock as needed. But since you changed the curve you will get higher clocks at the same temp.

Engineer POV: I caught on to undervolting a long time ago. It makes sense and it works; cooler operation with little or no loss in performance. Overclocking only makes sense as a sport for people who care about benchmarks and don't mind replacing parts that die prematurely.

Undervolting is efficient yeah. I undervolted my 5700xt sapphire nitro from stock 1.2v to 1.07v. I did drop the core by 100mhz but bumped up the memory by 80mhz and the performance was roughly the same but it runs so cool and quiet its really nice. Especially in the summer when the room is hot even without pc pushing out heat when running games.

With my tuf z590 and i5-11600k I did it differently and the end goal was similar. I set 1.45v in adaptive mode and offset -0.060. With all cores at 4.8Ghz, LLC 2, with AIDA64(CPU,FPU,Cache) stress test the vCore is 1.30~1.33. And the temperature 70ºC(158ºF). Previously it reached 88ºC(190ºF) with Noctua-NH D15. Hi Jay, you mentioned that your CPU power draw fell to around 200W after a rather long iteration to find a stable negativ offset level for your CPU. How much do you gain with the 12900K in CPU benchmarks compared to the method of just limiting PL2 and PL1 in BIOS to 200W? A very fast and easy way to bring CPU temps down.
