It is true that Korea is conservative in perception of foreigners compared to economic development. This is because Korean society has grown so fast that it is classified as an advanced country by the IMF in less than 40 years after the Korean War in 1953. The generation that grew Korea over the past 40 years has only worked. Unfortunately, Korean national conservatism was greatly influenced by the older generation. But now the younger generation is very free from nationalism. And Korea ranked 11th in the world and first in Asia in the 2020 U.N. Gender Equality Index. It is a country where feminism has been popular for a long time. It is a country where only women's voices are strongly spread through feminism, media, and political education. If Korea was a country with strong gender discrimination, it would not have been possible. There is hatred and discrimination in every country. There are many difficulties that women face in Korea, too. The problem is that Korea is a country where not only women but also men are discriminated against. Currently, 90 percent of South Korean men are forced to serve in the military. Military salaries were around 10 percent of the minimum wage until recently. More than 100 people die in the military every year. A lot of men get hurt in the army. But there is not much national compensation. The suicide rate of men in Korea is about three times higher than that of women. Korean men always receive more labor, more industrial accidents, and less social consideration because they are asked to be economical and masculine. In addition, Korean men must satisfy women's demanding desires to marry. Currently, the marriage rate in Korea continues to decline, and the birth rate is the lowest in the world. (0.81) Of course, the male suicide rate is among the highest in the world. Again, Korea is not a perfect country. Female problems also exist. However, there are many male problems as well. Korean feminists are influential in politics, education, and the media. Korean feminists always talk about women's problems. Many foreigners misunderstand Korea. Korea is Asia's No. 1 country in the gender equality index, and women are one of the safest countries in the world. But no one cares about discrimination against men. I know the ideals that you have about feminism. But Korean feminism has too many problems. It's not an ideology for everyone, it's been a long time since it's only an ideology for a particular feminist. Feminism is now one of the biggest social problems in Korea.

To be honest, Western developed countries flourished for 200 years through colonial and industrial revolutions. However, Korea became an advanced country only 40 years after the Korean War. Korea had neither colonies nor underground resources. It is funny that developed Western countries, which have grown leisurely, evaluate Korea as if they were looking down. And in general, the situation in Korea is much better compared to the level at which Asians are discriminated against in Europe. At least in Korea, there are few cases of openly beating or swearing at other races. Students bullying or bullying is a characteristic of teenagers not only in Korea but also in any country. It's the trait of immature children to bully because they're different from themselves

I'm glad they have this show. Coz S.Korea need to be open with biracial Koreans. Kpop and Kdrama are widely accepted in other foreign countries. It should be the same or at least meet halfway. Thanks to this program for opening it's doors to biracial Koreans and other foreigners in S.Korea.

@Hi H South Korea is not the only Asian country that didn't colonize or enslave people in the Middle East, South Asia or Africa. Few countries in Asia were involved in enslavement, conquering, or colonizing, with the exception of Japan and a couple others. I do agree that most Western countries have had centuries to grow and develop, and that chance should be given to younger countries too. However, because South Korea has a significant consumer base in racially diverse countries snd thus depends on them financially and socially, it's something they should take greater effort to understand.

There is too much pride placed on the pure blood thing but there is a particular African country which has almost 99% homogeneity, much higher than korea but people dont talk about it. South Korea has a consumer base all over the world, and because they depend so heavily on foreigners to support their TV, cosmetics, and music industry, it only makes sense that they work on accepting those same people who fill their pockets.

She's right, every Iranian I've known, through work , has been amazing, polite and kind. But also my experience as a teacher in South Korea was also very positive. Maybe I was lucky. I have very fond memories of South Korea. Those girls are so lovely, educated, well behaved, intelligent, respectful. A tribute to their parents. The best of both worlds.

I find it is very exciting to make new friends and learn about their cultures. My life is much better having so many friends to share so many different ways of living and experiencing life. Being a Korean national myself but living in the US, I really believe Koreans are very opinionated and closed minded for the most part. With that said, there has been some changes for the good since tourism has brought a lot of people from different countries and Koreans needed to be more open to different cultures. Without the change, tourism would not have flourished the way it has.

You are right. I thought South Koreans are very kind and open-minded until I watch this show. I always wanted to visit S. Korea and Japan. I admired Koreans and Japaneses' culture as well. But I am scared to come and visit there now because of their perceptions on foreigners. I don't want to be discriminiated from the countries I admired.

Most foreigners that i met in korea have the same story every time. I even experienced being refused of service. But for women to travel alone in Iran, I don't know if you can do it now?? I tried to go there about 15 years ago and as a woman I was told I am not allowed to travel inside Iran alone. If I was a man, I could have done it. Maybe it is different now?? Ironically I ended up going to Israel cause there it was no problem for a woman to travel alone using public transportation or walking alone in the night etc. I am Finnish, but I speak English, so even language was not a problem there. But it would be nice to know, if travelling alone as a (forgein) woman is possible in Iran now!?

We really do, guests are already considered "special gifts from god", foreign people/ tourists are even more special to Iranians! I can say with absolute certainty that Iranians are wonderful people. They're so full of love and joy. For example, when you walk on the streets and talk to food vendors, the hospitality they show brightens your whole day. Korea, on the other hand, as a brown Asian, I've had too many unpleasant experiences to fully appreciate the country. I continue to admire its culture from afar bc getting too close has resulted in nothing but heartbreak.

As a Finnish person (born an raised in Finland) who has lived and travelled around in Europe, Middle East, East-Africa and East-Asia I can say, that everywhere you go, you can find friendly people and then those who are less friendly. For looking different - blondish, blue eyes - I was most harassed in Tanzania (daily shouted at, men asking for sex etc.), but at the same time I lived with a local family, who took me in as just any memeber of their family, soon forgot my different looks and I have nothing but good things to say about them (I lived with them in all 6 months). Pure love to share our ordinary daily lives together. 15 years ago I wanted to travel alone to Iran, but atleast then it was not possible because travelling alone as a woman was not acceptable inside Iran. If I was a man, I could have gone. I don't know if it is different now. So I don't think you can find a place where everyone is accepting to everyone and no prejudice exists..

i once read an article that said koreans view "belonging" in korea as defined by blood. its called "danil minjok". a homogenous nation of ethnically identical people living in solidarity. and it stems from japanese colonialism because koreans believed that building a stronger nationalistic sense of identity would bring them strength, and then reinforced after the war. however, its contradictory, because its not really even about blood. if it was, north koreans and koreans living in china would not face discrimination. rather, its a perceived sense of blood unity, but built upon the idea that one race is one culture and one nation. thus, if you are from another nation, or a perceived outsider, you don't "really" belong. even orphans don't belong because they were cut off from their family line, and thus, their bloodline as well. however, it is noteable that koreans from abroad and korean adoptees can reclaim their citizenship and become dual citizens solely because of this bloodline thing. even if you're mixed i believe. as long as one parent still has their korean citizenship, you can reclaim it. meanwhile, migrants from all around asia can't even naturalize despite living in korea far longer than most korean diaspora.

Just one thing I want to say, not sure about other countries, but the UK has a diverse population that consider people from different backgrounds, ethnicity, disability and so much more. We have the equality and diversity act here in the UK and almost every course I have been on, it is hammered into my head. Some countries like the UK embrace people from other cultures. :) In that sense, I would always say if someone considers starting a business, look at the UK. Well worth it.

I’m from the uk and now I’m living in Korea , as good as the uk is in terms of diversity it’s also becoming the uk’s biggest problem aside from the rising crime rate. Diversity is great but politically correctness is taking over society and it’s becoming overly sensitive. Living in Korea reminds of the uk in 2000s where people are less socially sensitive but there is a lot less awareness on things such as mental health, I think both countries need a balance in between

Even in school we made international students part of our daily lives. Bdays, Bfs, lunch, dinners, class projects... We never let them be alone even though they wanna be with their countrymen. Indian prefer diversity over the same old group n that what makes us among the most loved Asian community. Its shocking for us to see closed people who dont include others bcuz it wouldn't occur in our minds. I'm introvert but I've had international boyfriends n watnot. I'm not surprised Iranians are nice. In India, the Iranian community (Parsis) are very successful, even in the movie industry. I used to live in los angles, USA and there were many Iranian immigrants there. My hair stylist was an iranian lady, and she was very warm. Amazing people. Actually, Koreans are also friendly if you make them laugh and feel comfortable. That's my impression. But yes i think Koreans are not used to foreigners.

Koreans are nice and most koreans are ok. My observation based on few years residency is simple. Most are from blue collar background and like most places globally, there can be some ignorance within blue collar workers and progeny due to lack of exposure to well myriad things. The typical exonerating statement in korea for the parochialism is that Korea has been colonised for far too long etc. I recently learnt that Vietnam was colonised for about 1000 years by the Chinese. Scholars can disprove this but Vietnamese smile a lot and are open. Gov and media in my view is not raising awareness as much as they ought to. Chinese people for example are no longer rowdy as they used to be about 10 years ago when I encountered them at airport terminals with folks rushing through queues and stuff. Change came via Chinese gov infomercials etc
