Imagine someone taking your family hostage. Then, they give you a cauldron and a climbing hammer. They tell you that if you can make it to the top of the mountain with only the hammer, while in the cauldron, you're closest loves ones (wife, husband, children, siblings, friends, whoever it may be) will be set free. There are only three rules. Rule number one, both legs must remain in the cauldron at all times. Rule number two is that you can have no outside help. Finally, number three, that you must use the hammer, and only the hammer. You may user your hands to balance yourself, but not to push yourself up. If you break any of these rules, if you step outside the cauldron, if you receive help from an outside source in any way, or if you throw down the hammer and start climbing with your hands, your family will be shot in the head, broadcasted to a phone you were given so you could watch, but not before he forced each one of them to say "Why did you fail me?". Whilst you are enduring this seemingly malevolent, sick twisted test devised by a seemingly sick, twisted bastard, the phone you were given recites quotes on failure and perseverance from historical figures every single time you fail. As well as this, the "mystery man" who took your family hostage also berates you each time you fail, but in a very passive-aggressive manner that hardly seems more like a cleverly disguised manipulation of your mental state rather than a jab/insult at you and your progress. Such as "Ooh, that looked tough. It's ok though, I am infinitely sure a man of your will overlooks such setbacks as mere pot holes in the road of progress". There is no time limit. You can take a day, and you can take a year. There is only the test to your will, perseverance, and patience. There is nothing even forcing you to do it. At any point, you can get out of the cauldron and walk away. However, if you quit, you will never see your family again. What people don't know is, once they get to the top, he asks them if they've learned anything. If goes on to ask them why they think he did this, and whether they were tested on their patience, perseverance, will, care for their loved ones, all of these things, or none of them. No matter the answers given, he goes on to give a nonsensical speech as your "reward" for completing such a impossible obstacle that has mentally crushed many before it. This speech seems to have little to do with anything, all you want if you family back. If you get angry and make an outburst (as any sane human would be expected to do after completing such a task and being greeted with a "let's sit down and chat" reward), he merely states that you've learned absolutely nothing, and disappears. You still get your loved ones, however the event has forever shaken all of you, and nothing in your life will ever be the same. Should you, however, listen patiently through his several hour long rant about patience, indomitable will, and some other things you really could care less about, he smiles. Then... everything goes black. You awaken in your bed, as usual. Your loved ones seem to have no memory of the event, and while you can recall it, you can only seem to recall dim, fogged memories that seem so distant that you are not even sure whether they are real, fabrications of your mind, or if you are merely recalling some dream. Despite this however, life seems to be better than ever. Hardships that are dished out to you and your family are taken with stride, the bonds you share with your loved ones are neigh unbreakable, and whereas life was merely "just living" to you before, it now seems to be the most beautiful thing ever. Your family notices this change in you and it inspires them as well. For some strange reason that you are not entirely sure, or perhaps even aware of, life seems to never be better. And the mystery man... dream... or whatever he was... though he put you through perhaps what would be to others the most mind-crushing, will breaking event of your entire life, you can't help but thank him for it. You can't help but to believe you learned something, though you aren't quite sure what.
