I have to say that as a Spaniard, I have always believed that the 'siesta' thing is related to the mostly very hot climate in Spain... You scorch under the sun in Spain just from going for a walk and it leaves you totally exhausted and without energy... This has never happened to me traveling to northwestern European countries, with mostly cold weather, especially when compared to Spain... But here the summer is too hot, especially in the south of Spain, in Andalusia, for example...
@powtinyslow
@powtinyslow Жыл бұрын
@@1894averagecitizen it's a factor for sure, but my area has cold winters and siesta is pretty much a thing anyway. I think it's mostly a cultural thing. Many of our jobs also have that nonsensical break between 2 and 5 pm, which heavily invites you to doze off. Drinking carajillos and wine during lunch probably doesn't help either 😂

@MaTeTris
@MaTeTris Жыл бұрын
@@Domaik_Paella was born in Valencia. It was made with all the things you could find in the Valencian "huertas" (vegetable gardens): rice, rabbit, chicken, veggies..But for the rest of Spain paella is rice with seafood (clams, mussels, eel, shrimp and veggies). That is what they call "paella marinera" (sea paella or something like that) in Valencia. I dont like paella valenciana, to be honest. The worst paella I have ever had, I had it in Valencia. I was expecting a delicious seafood paella and when they brought the "real one" with rabbit and stuff I was like "argggggg, argggg what the heck is this???". So I learned the difference between paella valenciana (the original one) and the other paella (the one with seafood that the rest of Spain believes to be the real paella) the hard way. Hope that helps clarify it.

I'm from Spain and the name of our Bourbon-Monarhical Flag is "Roji-Gualda"... And the Second Spanish Republic's Flag with a third lilac stripe is called "Tricolor"... (1931-1939) This one was illegal during the Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975) and you could end up being arrested for being suspect of being a Communist/Socialist/Anarchist supporter... Not kidding... My friend's father was arrested for that and his republican flag was destroyed.

You should do a "Getting Past Portuguese Immigration" video. It would be short. After you enter the office you would immediately get a citizenship title. You would say: "Oh, no. We are just visiting." And the immigration officer would say: "No, no. We insist, you are now portuguese citizens!" That would be it, and that would describe in perfection Portugal's immigration policy.

Some timely advice here as I'm visiting Spain for the first time this year as a non EU resident (you all know why) and will have to join the other queue 😱. I wonder if you'll get any backlash for the paella jokes once this reaches further into the internet. Jamie Oliver got a lot of heat for putting chorizo in his recipe a few years back, so maybe not everyone will find, "a bit of everything" quite as funny as the rest of us... 😉

@leopardusmaximus8706
@leopardusmaximus8706 Жыл бұрын
David Villa is a famous football player. José Tomás is a fascist, uneducated bullfighter (aka animal killer). Gaudí was a famous architect who designed the Sagrada Familia in 19th century but is still unfinished. Las Ramblas is one of Barcelona's main streets and very expensive. Many international criminals end up living in East Southern Spain. Many Spanish politicians (even the former king lol) are corrupt and thieves who got no consequences. Siesta jokes: the country is famous for taking naps after lunch, even if it's not accurate nowadays. Paella jokes: Paella is a typical dish from Valencia. Everybody "knows" a recipe for paella but Valencians will say it's poorly done, even though there's not a "single valid" recipe. At the very end, paella has a bit of everything. BUT. NEVER. CHORIZO. 😒 Catalonia jokes. Catalonia wants to become independent. Some Catalans will even feel being called Spaniard as an insult. Did I miss anyone?

My favourite quips - the gaudi architecture and the barbarism of referring to Catalonians as Spanish :v I almost feel like my recent rabbitholing into the dramatic events of kingdoms that existed prior to Spanish unification has paid off. Poisoning! Concubines! Vikings! And much more. I only managed a squizz at Castile, León and Aragon so far, but i defo caught a flavour of the historic resentment at how things turned out (ie, Spain). And it's interesting to note that not unlike the likes of occasional princely disputes among the Welsh, while fending off attacks from Norsemen on one hand, if warring kingdoms got annoyed enough with each other, they weren't above setting Viking mercenaries on each other. Which i suppose certainly couldn't be done once it was just one kingdom, which would probably have been super annoying for them from the looks of it. I'm particularly interested in whether the young bride of "Peter the Cruel" (King of Castile and León) in an arranged marriage was bumped off by poison before he married his original bit on the side, as is said to have occurred in the history books. Books notably written by those who served the guy who in turn bumped _him_ off and then sent the kingdom's Jews packing in a forced pogrom.. Or whether in fact she just... ate the wrong herbs.. Also, an English dude tried to lay claim to that kingdom - this failed.. but then i think his progeny ended up, like, marrying the grandson of the guy who had bumped off her granddad, or something like that. I found all this stupidly interesting. Imagine if you could just hire some Viking marauders to sort out your nemeses.
