Most things we buy are just to avoid unwanted experiences. Things are just useful, with no intrinsic value. A paperclip doesn't enhance my life, but it can hold together sheets of paper. It is useful, but not valuable to me.

Hot tip: Try not to buy anything expensive unless you *know* you'll use it often. Cheaper items are much easier to let go of if you don't use them, because it feels less wasteful.

5:10 "storage solutions are not the answer" Yes! Too often have I heard the excuse (from myself included) that better storage will solve the problem. Smart storage is obviously helpful, but it's easy to fall into that trap of looking for the perfect storage solution while avoiding the decluttering!

Took two sleeping bags to the homeless shelter, two used toner cartridges to the cartridge refill store, five old toys and costume jewelry to charity shop, one humongous bag of rags to the paint store (next time I'll take the rags to the Humane Society), and two Halloween costumes to the local school. That's only about 16 items, but, in volume, it was a substantial amount. I want to keep this going. Thank you for the inspiration.

This idea is somewhat of a current trend, but it is so effective. My wife and I downsized just over 5 years ago. We were truly amazed that getting rid of not only debt, which we completely eliminated through selling items and/or just paying off debt, but also getting rid of items that we didnt owe anything on. Just the process of simplifying life was extremely liberating. We could literally, over several months, feel a weight being removed. Over 12 months we dropped $350,000 of debt, bought a smaller older house of a piece of property, sold our new cars, sold our rental homes, downsized our wardrobes to only those things we actually wore, and finally got rid of all of the many items that we had collected over 20 years of being married. We found that our lives felt so much more content. This process is well worth consideration. Im certain that everyone can benefit from some level of life simplification

@@siobhanmulvey …thanks. Definitely was a scary time, for both of us. We believe not only worth it, but also a necessity in order to improve our own lives. Its up to everyone else to make their decision, but if we had to do it all again we absolutely would. Doesn’t mean that there wasn’t anxiety at the time, there certainly was, but the short term pain produced amazing results. It took us years to create that mess, that marketing had sold to us as the “American Dream”, so it was going to take drastic action to correct. This reply is 3 years since my original post, and we would still do it all again. BTW….we still drive used vehicles (accord 312k miles, tundra 198k miles, and tundra 104k miles). We are general contractors, so the two trucks are a necessity. However, we still won’t buy new or even one that is out of line with our life goals. We did buy a piece of property outside of town 1 year ago. Both our home and business are on the same property (reduces costs). We have some egg laying hens, just starting a garden, and try to continue our separation from the “stuff filled” world that most die chasing.

I felt bad for my Dad when my Dad got sick and we had to pack up his office. We were going through some things and found my brothers graduation program from MIT and my grandfather’s tax return from 1929. My mom was like he is such a hoarder we need to throw these things away. My brothers and I said no these things are important to him we are keeping them. Then we found fifty years of utility bills in the vault! Those got shredded!

I did something similar and probably did get rid of 1,000 items, maybe more. I feel much more free and am more aware of what I truly want & need in my home now. For at least a year I gave away 5 things every Monday. If I didn't know a person to give them to the bag went to Goodwill. I went from having hundreds of books to just 30. I love books, real paper books, and I can get most of the ones I used to have in the library, which also encourages me to read them in 3-6 weeks before the return deadline, which is good. Deadlines are useful. I keep very few "we might use this someday" items and I am aware of what they are.

I started my own "getting rid of 1000 things challenge". It is amazing how quickly things add up. In last two days I already got rid of 50 things. Today, I have gathered every piece of clothing, shoes, accesories and threw it all on my bed. If I don't absolutely love it and it doesn't bring me joy, it's gone. Life is too short to own anything that doesn't make me happy! Every single item makes me feel just a bit more free! Thanks for the fantastic inspiration! Hi TEDx Bedford! As always, it's a pleasure and a great honor tuning in to you! Each time, my experience is as going into an enormous shopping mall of wisdom. I'd like to toss it all in the carts of my mind, but, it's just that the spaces aren't as accommodating as I would like them to be. So, I just go here and there in this most magnificent shopping center until I find something to suit the fancy for now! This one was it! For sure, we've all got things which are perhaps worth something to others, yet, worth absolutely nothing to us. So, I'm really grateful for making this stop as a reminder to the effect that, on a regular basis, there are things which accumulate which are really space-waste, and/or time-waste (as they may be connected to invalid, unproductive memories). TEDx? By golly! Thanks to Liz .... you've done it again!

Very true about letting go of things and not worrying about getting them back! There are so many platforms now that you can basically find anything you want. I have ADHD and I live in disorganization and I decided I didn't want to live like that anymore. The "STUFF" was weighing me down! So now I am just throwing it all out and deciding to stick to a new motto "Quality Over Quantity". Quality living, quality items, quality time, just over all quality.

Over the course of my life, I've probably only gotten rid of 3 things I wish I'd kept, b/c they were old/rare & not easily replaceable, unless by a miracle. A tiny (about 2x3 inch) light blue book called "Beauty and the Beast and Other Stories" (it had the story Diamonds & Toads in it, which was my favorite), a pink shirt with a purple-haired girl driving a car which said "Joy Ride," and a t-shirt quilt I made but put in the goodwill box by accident. Other than those few things, I feel much freer without all the stuff I've said goodbye to. Got plans to downsize even more & build a tiny house! Life consists of experiences, not things. Ancient Egyptians buried themselves with their stuff, but we of course know that their things did not go with them into the afterlife. We can only take memories, and leave behind legacies.

I quit shopping for anything but essentials. Let the store be the storeroom. My goal is no frills all purpose. I delivered oats to a big Amish family. When I walked in the house it was all business no frills. Big room with a picnic table. Shelves full of canned goods. I thought yes. Clean and neat. Good goal. Good message.

Being a Shopaholic with hoarding tendencies, I related 2 + appreciated this Ted presentation. For some of us shopping is an addiction. I do recognize my compulsive need to consume. I'm trying to save money Plus live a more simple clutter-free life. I have found a few things that help. It helps me to limit temptation. I try not to grocery shop at Supercenters, the temptation to buy things other than food can be overwhelming. I buy paper goods, cleaning supplies and OTC meds at the grocery . even though a grocery store is often more expensive for those kinda items, I don't end up buying a television or a new wardrobe when I only need milk and bread. I found that removing the apps for shopping sites on my computer helps with impulse shopping. I actually am doing very well with limiting my shopping 2 the basics especially for myself. It is harder to limit purchasing the wants of my children but I am doing much better. BTW they still have more than plenty. I believe hoarding is a mental illness , quite honestly I'm having a difficult struggle with trying to declutter. It's a pity that shopping & hoarding are so intertwined. I've been on so many budgets, bought dozens of self-help books and I've tried so many organizational tricks and systems. I've played a lot of little games like throw away so many items in a day, buy something throw something away, ECT. It's time for me to stop a lot of obsessive planning on achieving perfection cuz it only makes me feel lousy and more prone 2 procrastinate !!!. Actually when feeling really strong impulses to shop I have tried this with good results, while taking my time, maybe even listen to some music, I rummage through my own belongings AKA shopping in your own closet. It is surprising and delightful finding so many items that I have forgotten about. Some still even having the tags on them. This also works well for me with linen & household goods , cleaning & toiletry items, dishes, pots & pans. This is also a very good time to take stock of what you own and to also tidy up, throw away wrappings + papers + getting rid of worthless junk as you shop :-). I am new at attempting a clutter-free more minimal existence. I don't mean to make it sound easy and that I have all the answers because I am struggling but I'm praying that developing tidy tendencies will become a habit. I loved the point made by the Ted speaker about eBay. Having bought many things on eBay, I've noticed how many of my possessions that I felt were one of a kind irreplaceable Treasures can be bought on eBay. if I need to repurchase something that I have purged, it can be replaced at a fraction of the cost that I had placed on the item , in my own head of course! For persons with hoarding tendencies, de-cluttering might be more successfully done as a marathon instead of a Sprint. Anyway please wish me well. LOL one cleared path at a time!

This is a very interesting idea. I suppose getting rid of things would be a chance for us to look back what we owns and take careful consideration of what really matters to us. The consumerism nowadays has promoted people to buy things impulsively so once in a while, it’s essential to categorize our personal belongings and learn to let them go and give them to those who need them more than us
@sunmarsh
@sunmarsh 4 жыл бұрын
I started getting rid of things two years ago... I don't know how many things it's been, but I would guess around 500? The more you get rid of, the easier it gets, so I tend to do things in waves, going over the same things and finding more things I'm willing to part with each time. I've sold maybe 30-40% of the stuff on ebay and have made several thousand dollars. It's not a sustainable primary income, but it helps. I'd like to continue getting rid of some clothes and a lot of my collectibles. About a month ago I started to feel (finally) a sense of calm. Before then I just felt completely surrounded by stuff, I felt like it was controlling me and my life. Donating and selling a lot of things has helped with that.

When it comes to clearing out other peoples things (my family are such hoarders) it can be stressful but I have learned (by KonMari) that it's not the best thing to tell them or try make them de-clutter, instead to start by leading by example, when they see how amazing and clear your space is they will want theirs like that too (hopefully) and they start making a bit more effort. Either way it's their personal issue thus something they need to tackle themselves.

I don't accumulate things and emotions, due to the fact I love open space. I only accumulate good memories in my heart. Everyday is a bliss. The golden rule of decluttering is non-consumerism. Grow your own vegetables and eat reasonably, too. Cluttered people are frustrated people not knowing what they want individually out of their life.

Don't forget to digitally declutter as well. The best tip I can give anyone. Pinterest is a digital hoarders paradise. (I speak from legitimate hoarding experience.)

There’s a new concept - it’s not talked about much yet -- “digital hoarding” - so many people save every personal email forever - & wonder if it has the same psychological basis. Regardless though, it is probably a behavior we need to give some thought to, with so many data breaches, because do we want to be responsible for revealing other people’s emails that were intended just for us?

I struggle with books! Cannot decide to get rid of and which ones? I’ve already have got rid of hundreds and hundreds. Have more than 2,500 left and it is really hard not to think of those in terms of money. Hence my dilemma... 🤷‍♀️

I have a friend who, like you, loves to read and would love to keep the thousands & thousands of books she's read. She reminds herself that books are ideas and ideas that we love should be passed on. Someone else is going to enjoy them as much as she did. I like how the lady on this video said that the $ has already been spent and the book has been read. My friend also uses Kindle (not everyone's thing, I know) It sounds like you have broken through that original barrier. Supposedly it becomes easier the more you get rid of them. I live in Toronto. We have these little wooden houses on poles. Kind of like a post boxes but bigger & cuter. There is 1 on every block. People take and leave books whenever they want for free. I don't think ppl had been participating with this so much since Covid--- but it seems to be taking off again. Definitely a win-win !!

figure out what your take-home pay is per hour. then when you go to buy something ask yourself how many minutes or hours of labor it takes to purchase that item instead of the dollar amount.

ss ..... give directly to the homeless in your area. There is usually a "soup kitchen" in every downtown area in medium to large cities. They take donations and hand them out for free to people who actually need them. Call ahead to see what they will take. Smaller towns usually have one of the churches accumulate food and other useful items in a "food pantry" to give help to those who need it.

Sometimes things we think of value, have value only because we remember them the way they were. I know there are things that I’ve thought that I couldn’t throw away and had to take to a charity shop, but then realized that a thrift shop wouldn’t want something that worn and out of fashion. I did give things to a friend of mine for a while who took them to a thrift shop or threw them away depending on a rational assessment of their value to someone else. At least I didn’t have to make the choice!
