For my regular viewers this might be a bit dull, but I hope it'll help the newbies with career mode. I ended up recording this at about 4am after an office party, which explains why my voice is a bit more restrained than usual, and for that matter why I'm concentrating on the height records first.

you know Scott, I watched every one of these a few years ago because I wanted to know how to play the game correctly, I knew how to land on the mun, but everytime I would take a trip to another planet, manned or unmanned I would never be able to get back. But you changed that, and you helped me a whole lot with this game, thanks man :)

Scott Manley In terms of "getting started" and new player recommendations: Placing 2 radial parachutes in a vertical arrangement on one side only on the first few rockets can help with "falling over" issues or control. Their placement can even dictate which side your door will be. Just thought i'd point that one out :)

A few tips I have figured. > Don't bother with parts testing contracts unless [1] they are in orbit and earn more money than the part costs [2] you intend on using that part anyway in an upcoming mission [3] You just started a new save file > You can stack the Mk 1 capsules together and take as many crew as you want on board this is a great trick for levelling up early on as you can land your starter 3 kerbals on the mun, minmus, and get lots of lovely XP without having to run 3 missions. > Later unlocked AI pods have the skills of a 2 star pilot, and therefore can be used to supplement a lack of skills if you're trying to level up a larger number of kerbals in a single flight. > You can do EVA reports, and take surface samples [when unlocked] whilst standing on top of your craft. > Place a satellite on low orbit over any spacial object you can, and equip it with a thermometer. This will help you knock off the "Transmit/recover science from space around " really easily. > On normal difficulty, if Bill Bob Or Jebediah die on a mission they will respawn with any XP gain still in tact from that flight, you can 'cheese' this by sending them out onto an orbit around the sun "accidentally" and recovering them from the trackign station. Send them out again in a capsule and recover and theyll get the XP for orbitting the sun. This however, i feel is a bug/exploit and may be patched out of the game.

My inner game designer is facepalming so hard at this... The game mechanics are currently set up to reward the player for not doing too well. Don't try to get into orbit yet, you'll miss out on cash. I doubt that's what the developers wanted the players to think, but that's what the game is telling us to do. All those biomes around the space centre cause players to do boring little tasks (quickly place a capsule on the runway) for some extra science. Why? If they were afraid new players would get into trouble they could lower costs in the tech tree in easy mode. If they wanted to stimulate players to drive around the space centre, they could have used an achievement system for actual achievements (such as getting on top of the VAB) instead of getting science for not playing the game. GAAAH!

When they introduced the science system, scott visited something like 5 planets on his second mission or somesuch. That was exciting, impressive, completely mad, awesome and all such things. By comparison, the contracts and money system just makes the game sad.

I got another tip how to continue from here: As soon as you get a wing part build a plane, it makes the very science rewarding survey missions possible and easy testing of parts in flight (planes easily fly at the speeds and altitudes required by the test). The first plane is going to suck, no landing gear means you need to use a solid booster to throw you vertically up and land using parachutes and rectangular girders to cushion the fall and using a rocket engine gives you very poor range. But once you use this to get enough science for a jet engine and some landing gear then you can make a proper plane, fly multiple survey missions, test a few parts in flight and land back at KSC so all it costs you is the jet fuel used during the flight but brings back more than 200 science per flight. If you never landed a plane in KSP before it might be a bit frustrating at first, but just quicksave before the runway and after a bit of training you will be able to land it in your sleep.(Also check Scotts plane tutorials on how to not make a plane that flys about as well as a rock)

Scott, I think it would be helpful for you to extend this video by showing what buildings you would recommend upgrading first and for what reason. Also if I might suggest a technique to try/demonstrate: I have found it useful to take test contracts for parts I haven't unlocked yet. This saves on science and part research funds, and most notably allows the Mainsail engine to be used before having to pay for that first R&D facility upgrade.

I consider myself a non-newbie, but I didn't know it was advantageous to grind the altitude contracts like that. (I foolishly went orbital right after unlocking decouplers in my current save, which I did as quickly as I could.) Thanks Scott! Also, I appreciate how they took things like surface samples and space EVAs and "hid" them from new players pending KSC upgrades, so there's a smaller core game to master at the start. I'm just hoping I'll be able to buy some upgrades in my lifetime...

For the part contracts, you don't have to unlock the research node where the part is. If you accept the contract, the part will appear in the VAB, but with an 'EXPERIMENTAL' tag on it. The part will again disappear when the contract is complete. There's also no initial unlock cost to test it until you actually research it.

Here's the thing. I was playing 0.25 then decided to carry over my saved game, ships to 0.90: I copied over the folders from 0.25 to 0.90 then launched 0.90 and clicked to continue the saved game. However, in this saved game all the facilities are fully functional; I don't have to fund them or build them, which is what you have to do in 0.90 proper when starting a new career mode (as Scott illustrates). Yet this _is_ career mode in 0.90; everything else is the same. There are new translation, rotation widgets in the VAB; Kerbals get XP; ships and parts need funds; everything has to be unlocked with science, and you fulfil contracts to earn funds and science. So even though it says I'm playing 0.90, it doesn't quite feel like 0.90. It feels like I'm cheating, but I'm not. I just did what I always do: carry over the saved game and ships to the new update. I'm confused! I don't think Squad intended for players to do this.

Protip: you can only store one copy of a surface sample in a craft, and with normal difficulty you need two samples to get 100% science. So, given that you want to max out your science on Kerbin: store the first sample in the craft, then take a second sample, then recover the kerbal alone, then use the tracking station to switch back to the craft and recover the craft.
@PinataOblongata

Instead of landing on water (which can be highly unpredictable) you can just use one or two girder segments as landing legs (they even have higher impact tolerance than actual landing legs). With planes you can make them take off vertically and land on girders horizontally or vertically (but you can't make a second flight or "hop" unless you use an engineer to pilot so they can repack the chutes, I think - haven't checked this). I wish I had known that about the altitude records and orbit before I started this new career, but then I guess I'm playing it more as it was intended. Having to try to complete missions with severe part and weight restrictions makes it interesting and challenging.

One question: are you going to try to go full steam in 0.90 and try to "break the game" with only the basic buildings ? Not sure if that is feasable anymore... I still remember you going to a lot of place in one go with a super tiny rocket.. Fly safe !

Great update on the Squad part, and great video on yours. Although, I have to disagree on one of your points - that it is beneficial to go slowly. Actually, as you progress through story missions, side missions rewards rise exponentially, thus you get more rewards for less time if you progress faster. Myself, after launching suborbital I started doing survey missions that are incredibly hard and offer 10-15 grand. In the meantime, after launching orbital, I can get up to 100000 for effectively launching extra few tonnes of payload on low orbit and 150000-200000 for launching satellites on weird orbits in Kerbin system. Can you also explain what does experience do for scientist and engineer? And can you get all the experience by getting some newbies toured by Jebediah around solar system?

RIP new players that now not only have to learn to deal with all the old stuff but now have to deal with ten times more stuff at once. I thought there was already enough to deal with lol

You have never played Dwarf Fortress. Do not play Dwarf Fortress, it is not your kind of game. It will begin with you not knowing what the hell is going on, and will end with either your suicide, you being confused, or you drowning hordes of elf hippies in badger blood. It's free, so you could jump into it recklessly if you wanted. Just do not play Dwarf Fortress.

DarthVaderReviews I didn't even play Dwarf Fortress but from all I heard about the gameplay mechanics, it's super complex. Dwarfs can even get injured certain body parts or going insane if you do something wrong.

Wheatley Well you can always start in Sandbox mode or Science mode. In Sandbox everything is unlocked, maxed out and you have unlimited money. In Science mode you have unlimited money but you must gather science to unlock the parts. I started a Career mode game and I'm not sure I like it. It's way too restrictive and as we can see from the video, requires an amazing amount of fiddling around doing some silly, unnecessary stuff that has nothing to do with going to space.

Do you plan to do a series with the .90 beta? I think it would be really cool to watch progression through it. I only ask because I really suck at this game

An interesting little nit-pick is that Scott could have further maximized the amount of science he could retrieve at 10:10 by standing on top of the landed pod and retrieving a rather damp surface sample.

You can't take surface samples until you upgrade the Astronaut Complex AND the R&D facility -- a very expensive affair.

I had to use HyperEdit to complete one of the contracts... But don't blame me. The contract was to activate the big 21t SRB IN ORBIT. It gave me 140000 funds! Note, it was just about 10-15 techs into the tech tree, so rather early in the game.

1. How did your solid rockets not explode when you landed in water? 2. How do you know how to navigate your rocket to fly above nearby countries/areas required by mission contracts?

Heck yeah. Visual surveys without proper planes are pain... But they are doable. You need to have a... lander consisting of a capsule, medium tank and engine (probablu one with 200kN thrust as it has a good it atmospere ISP and will easily give you TWR>1. Add parachutes optionally. So you put your lander into a suborbital hop to the target and then, as you are in the atmoshere you use your engine to maneover to target area and get the repert you need.

I have done this, and it's tricky. The main issue is you only have your ballistic trajectory to gauge your course. That trajectory will be modified by the rotation of Kerbin and by atmospheric drag. So, it is possible but especially for the missions that require you to go to multiple locations, it can really be more trouble than it's worth.
@pavelZhd
@pavelZhd 10 жыл бұрын
pseudocoder78 exactly to fix this rotation and drag effets you need a powered engine on the "lander" And multiple locations observation war really tricky. I had to launch a series of small LFE-powered planes (that would glide halfway to target) with sleds instead of gears that would crash... er... I mean land in the vicinity of exploration site to let pilot go EVA and do the job. Took me like 7 planes to complete first 3 locations contract.

Is there tutorials of the turorial in game. Really need these. Yeah the tutorials in career mode are cool but for people starting off will probably do the in game tutorials. The problem I have with the game in the tutorials is that they are worded awkwardly using these big words means people have to often search the difinition of that word to get somewhat of an understanding. Also it tells you to click SAS buttons yet it has no visual indicator of what it is and where. Some arrows or the buttons lit up would be great. Another weird thing I noticed practicing flying arcraft why when I use the planes rudder do the alerions move. The alerons will tilt the plane and then I have to equal it out so I don't go into a horizontal spin. The alerons should stay where they are if I want to only use the rudder/tail fin to turn the plane around. I'm stuck trying to figure out how you get into the same orbit as others and then catching up to what you are docking with. That is hard and in that tutorial the shuttle they make you use never has enough fuel.

manouvernodes are disabled at start, to get them back you need to upgrade the trackingstation and mission control. if i remember correctly thats around 200-250k money. you get to the missions about the mun and minmus before you get anywhere close to that amount of cash. and its nearly impossible to get to the mun with an 18t rocket. its practicly guarantied that you get stuck on kerbin if you dont know the tricks from first alpha-build. they realy need to soften that up a little, i guess 2/3 of players never make it to the mun.

Watched and loved this yonks ago and I've played Kerbal Space Program myself a bit. I was curious if the Kerbals (or their modding gods) have developed Space Elevator technology yet. Have you ever come across a mod for Space Elevator? Have you used it in one of your vids? I'd love to see it in-game. The first time I tried to convince my boss that people were really working on a Space elevator he was convinced I'd been drinking at lunch. He was sure I'd been sold a key to the flag pole.
