this is the best training on variables I've seen. I really appreciate that as someone who teaches ID, you really do practice what you preach. you don't just talk about how to do good ID, you show how to do it through the structure of your lessons. love your work.

Thanks! I figure, if I'm going to be a talking head on KZbin, I'll do my best to SHOW folks how to do things...rather than just present a bunch of bullet points. There's too much of that here on KZbin. 😉

Tim, this is yet another outstanding video. You have a natural skill for teaching and implying concepts. I've been following many of your videos and working along the examples you give, esp these storyline ones. I wish AS made their training videos simple, engaging and easy to follow. I have one question - On the build a healthy meal slide, how do you get the icons to not overlap on one another in the drop target box? Whenever I move an icon to the drop target box, the other one overrides it. I'd be very grateful if you or anyone else here could help with that. Once again, deep gratitude.

Thank you for this. I recently made something similar in functionality to your custom menu where you use true/false variables. It was a headache and a sloppy workaround. Eventually, I did get it to work. The way you showed it was so much smoother. But really, the most important thing I learned was that triggers go in order! I had no idea. I have been frustrated so many times trying to figure out why Storyline doesn't do what I think it should be doing. I think that the trigger order is why!

My goodness. I found the ending extremely difficult to digest. I had to review it over and over again. Did anyone do that or was it just me? (Be honest.) Your step by step instructions helped me to figure what I've done wrong and what hurdles we can possibly come across. Tim, you are the Storyline Guru! Thank you!

I’m glad you liked the video! Working with variables can be hard to wrap your head around, especially if you’ve never worked with anything like them before. My best tip is to just keep working with them and it’ll eventually click!

Thank you Tim! I've learned so much from the Storyline workshop! Did you make a video on how to configure the Reset button? I'm following along with you and I can't figure out what trigger to set for the Reset button? If it's a trigger, can you share what that would be? (It's driving me crazy lol).

This was ridiculously helpful! I've spent hours trying to figure out t/f variables, and you make everything so clear. I also appreciate that you showed appropriate triggers for certain situations...i.e. the 3rd step, use. I feel like so many things I've read and seen stop after step 2 and leave me wondering...well what am I supposed to do with this now? LOL Tim, you have gained a fan, right here. I'm transitioning from teaching to ID through a different program. The program is rigorous and amazing...but the videos aren't quite up to par and often leave me wondering...wait, what? What happens next? But what am I supposed to do with this info? Your videos are GOLD (I might have said that in another comment--get used to it because I'm sure there will be more.LOL) I will definitely be revisiting this video.

Hey Teresa! Great question! The demo course I used for this session are from the practice files I use in my online Articulate Storyline course, as part of our 8-week cohort program....so I can't give them out freely. Sorry about that! However, I will consider creating dedicated practice files for future How-To Workshops.

Thank you, Tim, for the video. I have a quick question. How do you prevent Storyline from adding values to MealCalories variable over and over if users drop the same object into the drop target twice or many times? It is possible that users may choose banana first (for example), then change their mind and remove their selected item ,and replace it with a new one (apple). In this case, isn't SL adding value to MealCalories over and over, which may result in wrong calculation? What triggers would help solve this issue? Looking forward to hearing from you!
@elearningacdmy
@elearningacdmy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! To answer your question, you'd need to change the state of the dragable object to disabled once the learner drops it on a drop target. That will prevent the learner from moving it again. However, I'm sure there are many other ways to accomplish this. Hope that makes sense!

Great DEMO!! I have a question however... I followed along was able to do all the variables you showed with the exception of the number one since I did not have a drag and drop interaction set up like your demo. My question goes back to the first demo the "name". I noticed that if I blew off the name, yes i got the warning and i was the able to type name in but it did not display. do you know why this may be?

Tim, love your videos. Can you help me to retain variables for session once the module has been marked as complete in the LMS. I want to prevent the course/exam from being accessed once completed. 1. I created a custom variable to set to true when the begin exam button is clicked 2. I created a layer on the first slide that states if the variable is true, to show a layer that states they may not attempt the exam again, and it covers the begin button. 3. The setting in the player says to never resume When I test it in our LMS and SCORM Cloud after an attempt, opening the first slide does not show the layer. For testing I made a textbox referencing the variable at the beginning and end pages. When I first complete the exam the variable shows as true at the end. But clicking the module again in the LMS it shows false on the first page, which is why the layer is not showing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

@The eLearning Designer's Academy by Tim Slade Thank you for replying. I did reach out to them as well and while they didn't provide a way to retain variables, by changing the player settings to Always resume, the learner would only be able to arrive at the results page if they opened again.
