Cutting the first end of the rail almost but not quite all the way through, to support it while you cut the other end... GENIUS. Applies to cutting out a section of virtually any rigid material, whether face frame, 2x4, pipe, etc. Brilliant. Thanks!

Another trick is to check the size on multiple microwaves at different stores (try HD, Walmart, Target, say) - and buy one that shares a size with various other brands - it's likely that size will still be available in the future.

Hopefully you saved that cross member you cut out for the microwave. Rip it to the same 3/4ish height as the microwave shelf then attach it there and paint it to match.. That way you can no longer see the plywood AND the shelf has the same reveal depth as as all of the cross members (professional look) rather than raw plywood (diy’er look)
@CitEnthusiast
@CitEnthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
Need to make a new cross member, the original is now too short. But the concept is right on the mark. The cross member also needs to be just the thickness of the shelf, or slightly taller (to keep the microwave from sliding out forward). That finishes the plywood and won't take away space in the small drawer.

Maureen TheTemp How often do people actually use microwaves though? Genuine question! It seems as if Americans consider them absolutely essential items that are in use daily. Here in the U.K. we all have them, but at most they are used to reheat a few leftovers once in a blue moon or maybe zap some two minute packet rice if we are feeling lazy. I don't know anyone who couldn't live without one. Mine is in the utility room and I probably use it less than once a week.
@MaureenTheTemp
@MaureenTheTemp 3 жыл бұрын
@@spencerwilton5831 I use mine all the time, great to steam vegetables, melt butter, heat water for tea, cook omelets (I have a plastic widget that makes a great omelet for one in the microwave.) And when I am lazy, to heat up frozen dinners. I also cold brew coffee, so I'll heat that up in the microwave as well. I can see why this placement would appeal to those who don't use their microwave every day, and the craftsmanship of the installation is really sharp. Not sure if my use is an American thing, though, or just a lazy and impatient person thing!

Maureen TheTemp An Englishman once made tea using water heated in a microwave. Rumour has it that if you pass by the Tower of London on a quiet night you can still hear his tortured screams. As for cooking omelettes in a microwave- I shudder at the thought! What's wrong with a small, non stick pan? More authentic, tastes better, just as quick and still only one item wash up! A microwave is nearly always a compromise for actual cooking.

My first thought, that has been mentioned by others, is that some sort of screen needs to be put over those holes to keep mice out. They will nest in the dishwasher insulation. Needs to be extra sturdy mesh and possibly have steel wool behind bc they will chew through metal screen mesh. I found that out the hard way with my pantry. I'm not very fond of the microwaves down low because I have a bad back. I prefer ones that are higher up, but not too high. My friend's kitchen has a microwave cabinet that is similar to a tank topper cabinet but the opening is large enough for a freestanding microwave to sit on. Freestanding microwaves usually need about 3" of space on the sides and back to vent properly.

Great job!! That's a good tip ! Putting the chef Mike in the cabinet! Helping out a friend with his kitchen remodeling, but the 'contractor crew' thats doing the work are nowhere near as knowledgeable as you and your son, they aren't even detail oriented! I've been trying to make sure the 'crew' is doing the job right! So, again thanks again for your videos! God bless you and your family!

Thank you so much, you won't believe how many contractors that don't have a clue about how to modify a microwave base cabinet to fit a microwave oven.

Nice job, but cannoit believe anyone would want to lose a drawer and have to bend over to use it.

Yeah. This is going to be one of those things that causes the kitchen to lose value. Immediately the next buyer will say "I'm going to have to pay someone to move that".

Not to mention not all directions use the same wattage of microwave when they write them up, so you have to play the guessing game...so that's even more bending down to see if its done or needs more time....and it seams to me like it would be awkward to grab food out of it! Looks ghetto as hell to me! And totally out of place!

Same amount if bending for the dishwasher next to it. Been seeing a lot of installs in the island.

@@richardp2267 But you only have to empty the dishwasher once a week and you arent trying to hold hot plates and dishes when you do it. Makes no sense. Not what you call user friendly.

I think I would have removed the material from the middle of the drawer instead of the top and bottom. If you notice, all of the other cabinets and drawers have the same size frames, but different size panels. I know the panel would have ended up tiny, but I still think it would have ended up looking more consistent. You could still try it: use the larger drawer you aren't using, rip a bunch of material from the middle, and see if you like it better.

I just did one like this. I mounted 4 strut bolts to the bottom of microwave. Then tighten bolts to pieces of half strut upside down. After centering Micro on a wood shelf mark center line of both channels. Drill two pilot holes large enough for strut bolts add square washers. Slide micro with strut onto bolts and tighten the bolts from underneath after removing lower drawer to set final depth of micro. Allow it to protrude as much as the face of the lower drawer front. Then create a 3/4 plywood or hardwood template with a cutout of the microwave opening leaving a 1/8 all around. Make sure template also stays within the dimensions of your overlay of your fronts and drawers. Go to local laminate top place buy a remnant piece of brushed stainless steel sheet. Laminate the template with the sheet with contact cement. Route the inside and outside of the template. You now have a custom stainless trim. After filing edges or sanding use blue tape to cover the stainless. Use a matte black spray paint to finish inside and outside edges. If your brave or OCD rip edge banding out of the stainless alternatively to paint finished edges. Be careful. It's sharp. Wear glasses and gloves. Fraction of the price of the store bought trims. Fully customizable for any microwave or cabinet. I like your version, it works for what you had to work with. Many older people or those with shoulder issues like these mounts. A true drawer microwave is usually at least a thousand bucks. Unachievable for most folks. Good compromise 👍
