Today we're doing another ranked journey in Street Fighter 6! This time I'm trying out probably my most hated character in SF6, it's E. Honda. Can I get wins without any practice, using only Headbutt and butt slam? Wish me luck!

​@@ivanleon6164I wish, you can hit Blanka out of all his ball moves with good normals, unlike Honda who has antiair priority in all his headbutts, also only HP Blanka ball is safe on block but it has the slowest start up, and unlike Honda's ex headbutt , Blanka has no armored balls which means you can't ball through projectiles, LP Blanka Ball can be used to set up grabs but is useless if you don't condition the opponent to block.

Jmcroft is clearly really good at fighting games, and with Honda being a simple character, he doesn't need to have good combos to get a high rank with him. I think it's true that you don't need to be good to make it to diamonds with Honda, but you don't need to be good at Honda that is, as it's enough to be good at the game.

When the character's counter play is built around perfect parry, when the majority of the player base is not well versed in the mechanic, it becomes common to see Honda completely derail the match. Especially when people love to burn excessive drive gauge against the character who deletes 1 bar on a blocked headbutt, putting them into burnout (death sentence against honda).

Honestly? The counterplay is "Stop trying to counter headbutt". Seriously, everybody's saying "DP it or Perfect parry it or whatever" and yes you CAN do that but you have to give up so much space to get into position to react to it you basically give him the corner for free. Block the headbutt (Parry it if you can) and focus on countering what he does AFTER the headbutt. Everything he can do that is super dangerous for you is a big risk for him, and if he wants to walk backwards to headbutt you again you can walk and block after him or drive rush + low to tag him while he's not watching his toes. The proof is honestly right here in this video, the people who spent the whole match trying to beat headbutt got smoked, while the people who played the post-headbutt game generally came out on top.

Vesperarcade showed a great video of, I think it was Go1 as Honda, playing against maybe Kazunoko, and Kaz kept parrying the headbutt. Go1 thought it the parry was too good, but Dogura(?) didn't really believe that and told Go1 to throw out a standing fierce, and that made Kaz parry every time. It was hilarious. Anyways, Honda mains stand up! Also these plat players don't seem very good.

I'm Plat 1 right now and the best use of DR I've seen was a Silver Zangief who would drive rush at me, expecting me to throw out an interrupting poke, and then he'd stop short and punish counter me, consistently. No one else I fought is even using drive rush outside of combos rn it's so funny

You could get to same rank with other characters with scrub strats... people in the lower ranks dont really know better how to deal with some stuff... Sonic boom + flash kick, blanka balls, anyways... this doesn't work on higher ranks (I've played Honda since ST and now master rank here and I'm loving it)

It feels to me that the game should force you to play 10 unique players to get the best estimate of your ability. In this video you only played 4 players which I feel is not enough information to accurately gauge the proper ranking. But I do hate playing against Honda myself lol. I used to main Honda in SF2 and SF4. SF6 Honda is indeed his strongest appearance, HHS is not even a piano input now, back then only few people can do it... I know several people who got him to diamond or platinum by just spamming headbutts and buttslams. heck, even the No 1 Honda does it at times

You want to know the secret to beating headbutt? Stop throwing your games away trying so hard to beat headbutt! Yes, you can perfect parry it or DP it if you're far enough away from honda that you can react, but you're giving yourself an aneurysm trying so hard while the honda is just saying "hee hoo i press the funni button."... and all that distance you're putting between yourself and him is just free real estate for him to walk you into the corner with. Parry it if you can, but blocking it is fine. Focus on what to do AFTER you block the headbutt: The only things honda can do to you that will really mess you up are huge risks, and if they want to walk back to headbutt you again then walk and block after them or drive rush + low to catch them not watching their toes. Pay attention to what the honda likes to do after headbutt and focus on countering THAT. The proof is right here in the video, too. The people who had the most success in the matchup were the ones who were playing post-headbutt situation rather than getting hit over and over again trying to stop honda from headbutting.

Being able to antiair, putting together the small combos he could, he figured out comboing into the super, upping the pressure when they were burnt out, changing the game plan when they were reacting to the headbutt, his defense. I thought it was all solid fundamentals. You really think a rookie level player could use only headbutt and butt slam and beat platinum players? I guess. Fun fact (not really), LP headbutt is safe against both drive impact and even more perplexing, drive reversal (you literally get a free punish for your opponent attempting). The risk/reward going for a perfect parry is also heavily in Honda's favor since if you mess up and Honda gets a punish counter headbutt, it will out damage your combo since it starts off with 50% scaling.

Another fun fact. Historically Honda headbutt lost to jump back button or a pre-emotive button (in super turbo crouch jabs mashes would be a good pre-emotive button against headbutt)……. Both will get you killed. Perfect parry with 100% accuracy or lose to little Timmy who picked up the game 10 minutes ago

No headbutt is inherently safe from drive impact, it entirely depends on timing. It's a huge mistake to drive reversal anyway, you'd lose 3 to 4 drive bars for a reset to neutral (in the best case scenario) on a -4 special.

The video is dishonest. You did a lot more than headbutt and butt slam. You are a good player, If you played a good character you could have gotten farther. Your other characters actively need buffs and are often #1 and #2 lowest on the pick rates and tier list. You could have done the same and easier with Juri, Ken, and Luke.

Yeah basically this is a big factor. He is really experienced and damn good in all the game's basic mechanics. Of course he does well with stronger moves. But the experience and reactions also carried.

When I started I went by the rank I got when I played SF5 one month before SF6 launched (bronze). So I won 9/10 and got placed in gold (faced some silvers and golds in the first like 7 rounds). Climbed all the way to diamond by realizing something pretty simple: People all the way to platinum don't know how to walk forward consistently. As long as I could anti-air and headbutt the drive rush, they could not move forward at all, sometimes even cornering themselves waiting for a headbutt to perfect parry. People are right that Honda carries, but not for the reason they think. I believe he carries not because "hur dur specials are plus", but because he exposes other people's weaknesses, and judging by the amount of rage quits or quits after single losses, I think most people don't even care to learn what those weaknesses are.

This 100%. A lot of people don’t know how to approach or apply pressure and become too reactive instead of proactive. That’s where Honda thrives and gets to do whatever he wants. This game is far more than learn some combos and get a hit.
