As a thyroid patient who had hair loss issues the things that helped me most were: 1)natural desiccated thyroid at an optimal dose, it’s difficult to find a good one these days but it is possible. 2) zinc, selenium and iodine supplementation. Zinc especially for hair loss. 3) B supplements in the methylated form. 4) castor oil treatment on your scalp nightly. I had no eyebrows and I had thin patches on my head and was generally a hot mess. I have fully recovered and feel great and have a full head of hair and eyebrows once again. Cheers!

Hi. I am a female Barber by trade. I so appreciated this discussion. I had a customer that for years had unusual hair shedding. The little I’ve learned over my 38 years was that gross hair loss is tightly linked to thyroid. Finally 10 years down the road this client told me that her thyroid finally tested problematic. So exactly to your discussion was that it’s overlooked until it’s massively wrong. Side note: I love you Dr Hyman and your guest today. I have watched several of your videos and your videos with Dr. Boham together. I read a lot about health and I just wanna cry when I listen to your talks and see that you can know these common denominators that causes poor health in our society and you are doing something about it. Hi Dr Hyman, thank you for introducing this topic because it requires a lot more study. From my experience as a sufferer of alopecia universalis, (the most extreme baldness) I would say that it is caused by both thyroid and "shock" circumstances. After childbirth I started experiencing extreme stress, gut problems, what we now call insulin resistance, and chronic fatigue... my hair fell out in clumps but grew back. 20years later I had a severe shock and lost my hair within 3 weeks. It has not grown back. My great grandmother also lost her hair in the same ways in similar circumstances ... she was 13 and I was 45. Now at 72 I am told I have primary hyperparathyroidism which if diagnosed earlier could have been taken seriously and prevented from further breakdown of my various organs. I did read somewhere quite a few years ago that the Australian outback fires have caused a significant increase in total hair loss which harks back to the shock factor again. Thank you.

One of the issue's is that Insurance Co's will not pay to check Amino acid levels and vitamin Levels or Iron when the HH is WNL. A patient will get stuck with that bill. I think Dr's are up against time constraints vs doing the deeper dive which as mentioned is not supported-either by their institutions in which they are employed ( which are volume driven) or the insurance co that tell them what they will pay for and what interventions are " covered. " I am a firm believer in Functional medicine and trying to incorporate as much as possible into my practice as I can, despite the constraints in modern medicine. I do hope this changes as a more functional medicine approach is both sensible and natural.

I go to my stylist every 3 weeks and she immediately noticed a difference. For me it was poor nutrition, lack of vitamin D (plus K2), cod liver oil, iodine & basically going carnivore to ensure I get enough protein & iron. I make sure I get my micronutrients by keeping electrolytes in stock. My hair did a 180. Just for fun I added minoxidil & red therapy helmet…the external things came last. My right temple is my only “complaint” but everyone else tells me it looks fine. I’ll see what the red light therapy does. Dawn, I remember when I was a mother of 2 young boys and my doctor said my thyroid levels were normal and thought it was normal to be exhausted after having my sons. Went to an endocrinologist and discovered it wasn’t normal at all. Not sure if you’ve been but worth checking out. Just don’t let them lay your hands on your gland! Dr. Scott Mumby MD and much more, book, “Secrets of an alternative doctor” said, no matter what type of thyroid disease we have, we need iodine. In fact he said even if we are “normal” we need iodine. There are 2 products he recommends, Lugols iodine, and Xodine is the what I bought (without alcohol), I literally just started on it last night. My thyroid was a goiter and Dr. Numby stated a goiter thyroid is swollen because it needs iodine and is not getting it. That was my problem too. I was taking a iodine/iodide version of thyroid over the counter in tablet form (don’t like tablets) but I noticed my goiter literally went down completely. The other book I recommend (because we are all on high stress) is Dr. Ben Lynches book, “dirty genes” I loved reading what he has to say about getting our genes cleaned up. He has questionnaires that will lead you to know what the problem is. High Stress, High histamine foods, high peroxide levels create autoimmune issues that leave us feeling sick. He doesn’t right about hair loss per se, but it’s valuable in the sense increased levels of the above mentioned items, lead one to be sick and not know why. I love, love the book. I put myself on glutathione/per the book to handle increased levels of hydrogen peroxide and I felt amazing!!!! Dr. Lynch did say, after taking it and you feel better “stop taking it” as it can go in the opposite direction. I appreciated that honesty! Good luck to you and I wish you the best.

A co-worker came to me and lectured me about how I should be ashamed about being in public with such thin hair and that I should seriously consider getting a wig. That job was so demeaning and humiliating that it took me 20 years to get over the CPTSD, and I had the job for 15 years. My periods became erratic only 2 to 3 days in duration. I became heavier, and it was almost impossible to lose weight. My TSH is 0.64 and I think that level is causing all sorts of problems in my system. I currently do not eat all day. I stopped taking it for 2 years and I see my hair start shedding again! That’s why I am here, now I know why! My primary NP took T4 test for me which is normal, I will ask for T4 too. Also i probably have insulin resistance build up because I have belly fat

I haven't listened to the whole podcast yet, but i am gathering that there hasn't been much discussion about stress related hair loss. It's definitely a thing!! Especially during the last several months related to Covid and the political situation and election. I have had hair loss/thinning for the last 3 months at least- have been tested for autoimmune, thyroid, etc and all normal. There are supplements and serums that are available- lots of info out there now- because it is a thing! Looking for someone to advise me on the best integrative treatment.

Just to let you know I had hair loss in 2020 & it was getting bad. I started taking inositol, berberine, biotin, collagen & vitamins. I'm shocked cuz my mom who had thyroid issues was almost bald and grew her hair back. I also got my hair back too. I'm so thankful I was a bit scared as I have pcos and know its effects. Another thing we did was we put coconut oil & castor oil in our hair overnight or a few days if your not working. Honestly I'm shocked this worked so well. Hope it helps!!

I appreciate the info here but one of my issues with funcitonal med or med in general is that they usually don’t emphasize proper stress management or other factors like emotional and mental health. Stress is a huge factor and you can do everything right diet and supplement wise but if you don’t do what you need to reduce it and even cut out certain stressors, and get enough rest, that’s not a true holistic approach. And that’s why many people stay on a healing hamster wheel. Sometimes you even need to make big changes in your life like changing jobs and downsizing their life. Even if you can’t afford functional medicine, most people can incorporate at least some stress management techniques like a short meditation daily, taking leisurely walks,, breathing exercises and maybe also improve other areas like eating more whole foods, cutting out alcohol, etc.

Get Dr. Ben Lynches book on “dirty genes” I can’t say enough about it. Hydrogen peroxide levels go up, turns hair gray quickly, histamines from food and increased hydrogen peroxide levels create another toxic chemical reaction in body that leads to autoimmune issues and gut plays a big role in that too.

As I mentioned in my message to Dawn (read it if you can) Dr. Scott Mumby MD and more, “secrets of an alternative doctor” he states that no matter which thyroid issue we have, we need iodine, he recommends Lugols Iodine or Xodine as it has no alcohol base (if you are sensitive to that). I literally just started Xodine last night. I do believe that our issues are multifaceted. Gut, gotta be able to absorb the nutrients we are eating. Dr. Ben Lynch, “dirty genes” protocol really helps feel better and clean up some of the autoimmunity using diet and in essence in this video they also talk about diet. Beware of High Histamine foods, that leads to increased hydrogen peroxide levels and that cascades into releasing other toxic chemicals and BOOM, autoimmune issues spring into action!

PCOS and PCOS hair loss doesn't always include weight. Nor does it always point to a crappy diet. I have it and IT caused diabetes after 15 years of being swept under the rug because of this thinking. Symptoms started after VACCINES I had in the Army in 2008. Doctors stopped there and refuse looking further... since I want to treat the cause... not given a Band-Aid rubbed on public bathroom door (metaphorically speaking) .... aka Metformin. If you know anyone willing to tackle this.........

could male pattern baldness be triggered over the winter when vitamin d is low? could it be this simple? I lost about 1/2 the hair off the top of my head when I was around 30. this is probably male pattern baldness, but I am asking if it's natural, but still triggered by low vitamin d3 - where the body says - hey I need to absorb more sunlight - kill the hair on the top of the head. my hair loss stabilized over the course of a year or so, but I really wish I could remember when it started. i would see a lot of hair at the show drain for about a year or so. how did elon musk turn his hair loss around? propecia?
@Rebecca-ys3cb7 ай бұрын
You know when a KZbin doesn’t bother to reply to such a serious question in 3 years! Than you should make sure you unfollow them. The answer is YES vitamin d is critical to keeping hair on the head. Think commonsense .. if you’re from your native country you get as much sun as u you can in that country.. food grows outside so go grow it.. go to a community garden or make one of you don’t have one. Get as much sun as you can for your genetic make up. Eg if your black your going to need a lot more than me and I need at least 1 hour a day to make up for the lies that over been fed, I am white. I put my solar panel in the afternoon shade and now it doesn’t get enough to be bright enough now we are in autumn… so, if needs a hell of a lot more than 1 hours sun to provide me with light. Every cell in our bodies had a positive and negative change and we have to charge them with daylight. Or foods that have soaked up the day light for us if we can’t get it. If you don’t you’ll be running around with flat cells and flat cells equal no energy in that cell.. the cells is down regulated and they gene is no longer working efficiently if at all. So get sun!
