Hey Leon Confirmed!!.. I had an experience last Memorial Day on my SX190. I didn’t noticed that I was idling over some Sargasso, which blocked the strainer and triggered the overheat alarm. I jumped in the water, cleaned out the strainer from the back of the jet pump, and restarted it, but the alarm kept going off. I did this a few times with no luck, so I called a towing service. The tow company was super busy that day and took forever to arrive. They were towing us at least 15 mph, which I later found out could damage my engine! But before that I took precaution and I used the same pliers to clamp that hose, and put the throttle forward also. When I got home, I ran the engine on a hose for a few minutes, the alarm keep going off but noticing that the water is coming out from correct spots, and after a restart the alarm finally stopped. I've since taken it out around Miami a bunch of times with no issues. Just wanted to share my story and confirm that your recommendation really works - 100% proven!

Good to know! Wow close call with them towing you that fast. It's not easy to get them to slow down. I'm glad it all worked out for you!

Very informative! I agree, always clamp that hose when moving faster than no wake! 👍🏻👍🏻

When I had to limp back to the dock on one engine on my 240, it was imperative that I clamped off the dead engine. The water current, waves, and distance I had to travel wasn’t feasible to stay at “no wake”. I wasn’t barreling back, but I had to go over 5mph to maintain a safe course home. $5 vs $15k, I’ll take the clamp any day!! 😁 Thanks for another quality video Leon!

Thanks Capt for sharing. Very helpful. I wish there was a way to just block water from entering the pump area all together, this way we could leave the boats in the water safely. Be safe and God Bless!

Very helpful video. Thx! Two questions: 1) By using that clamp, is there a risk of damaging that water inlet hose? 2) Wouldn't it be better to just have that valve you showed installed? Or, is the concern being by doing so you'd be adding a potential future fail point (leaking clamps, failed valve, etc)?
@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore

Good questions, I've wondered the same. 1. The rubber hose is soft. The right plyers with soft edge doesn't hurt it at all that I can tell. 2. It's really tight for me to get a valve in there, I also felt it could fail or reduce water flow with salt build up, may be over thinking it.

@@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore Thanks for your thoughts. I asked my dealer's mechanic the same question. He had never heard of it, and being on a lake, said that Seatow would just have to be told to keep it under 5mph as the owner's manual instructs. He expressed concern that pinching the lines could cause potential unseen internal damage to the hoses and wouldn't do it. But as you boat in open water and could be many miles from shore, I get it that your towing company may not want to take hours towing at 5mph, so it would make sense to take the chance on pinching. I guess it's just a situational thing. Real shame that Yamaha doesn't factor this in by installing shutoff valves for such a critical matter..unless they like the revenue from selling new engines :)

@@jonathanspier6631 makes sense. The hose is still pretty soft and pliable, but if dried out then pinching it could cause problems I think. All good points. Thanks.

Great video as always! I have an AR 250 so if one engine fails, I'd hope that I could use my other engine to get back to the dock. If I clamp off the failed engine can I go faster, maybe 20 mph?

Honestly, I wouldn't chance it. Follow the manual and the hose clamp just adds peace of mind. Thanks for the compliment!

Capt, say it isn't so! What happened that you had to be towed in? I installed a shut of valve so I can kill that sea water coolant line. I also flush in slip. Hope your beautiful jet boat is ok.

ive been so frustrated with this. MY 24 AR195 only has one access hole on the right side bilge cover and my flush line and water inlet hose merge on the aft side of the firewall on the left side like yours. No access unless I remove that entire cover because I cannot reach it from the access hole. Not convenient at all :(
@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore
@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore 2 ай бұрын
Agreed, that does make it difficult. So you can't clamp it where it enters the engine compartment?
@EvolATV
@EvolATV 2 ай бұрын
@@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore no unfortunately the Y is in the bildge area. Single line once it is in the engine compartment.
@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore
@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore 2 ай бұрын
@@EvolATV well why can't you clamp it where its a single line in the engine compartment, it doesn't matter that its not near the flush line joining it.
@EvolATV
@EvolATV 2 ай бұрын
@@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore the lines merge before that. I would be blocking flush port and the main inlet.
@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore
@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore 2 ай бұрын
@@EvolATV That's fine, why does it matter? As long as you're stopping the water from entering into an engine that's not running. After the "Y" is fine if it's just the flush line.
