You are always so respectful with spaniards in your videos! Thanks for that. I enjoy them all and find different points of view about things I took for granted. I'm with you about being a challenge to live in a country different of your own. That's exactly what makes you successful and stronger. Te veo en el próximo, crack! Hasta luego.

We came from Sweden 21 years ago. While Sweden every day is getting worse, Spain is developing. I took five years to speak the language so we don’t have to rely on anyone. After 12 years we decided to become Spaniards. We feel extremely safe and we have many friends here. Every year we go to mainland Spain (From Tenerife) to explore our beautiful country. The move to Spain was the best thing we ever made in life. With 600 Mbps fibre optic we can enjoy your excellent programs. Spain is moving forwards.

Funny you should make this video; My parents are similar to you- but in reverse. They moved to Australia from Seville, Spain on the 5 May 1971 and on the 5 May 1991 they moved back to Spain. My Dad liked Australia (probably because he was always working) but my mum could never get used to Oz. I remember her saying that when she got off the plane in Sydney she said it reminded her of a Western Movie. Things got better over the next 2 decades but (my Mum especially) never got used to life in Australia.

I think you need not only an open mind but an open heart for the people where you plan to live. You need to have the ability to see yourself in other people even though they grew up differently than you. If you do not speak the language of the country where you choose to live and the people who live there predominately do not speak your language,this will make getting used to the new country very very difficult if not depressing. Some ex-pats who have the wherewithal visit their country of origin a few times a year and it makes a huge difference to the quality of life in their newly chosen country. I think there is a timeframe unique to the individual and psychologically speaking where a person asks himself or herself should I really have moved here or what am I doing here or am I going to just do this for a few years and then go home or am I really going to stay here etc. I think an authentic circle of friends is a huge component in getting used to any new country because if you are blessed with a good circle of friends I think adapting is infinitely more easy. On the same note if you plan to be a loner it could make adapting to a new country very difficult. Having a spouse or partner who is well-connected into the community is another huge factor. Having your own interests or hobbies whether it be playing a musical instrument or practicing a sport or studying academics of your choice can go a long way to feeling comfortable in a new country. Now with technology we have apps such as Meetup which offer a lot of opportunities for socializing. Finally perhaps the biggest part of adapting to a new country is the research you do before actually moving there. I think it is wise to make a few trips and if you can,stay 1 to 3 months at a time if you have the luxury of doing that. You can take what you absorbed and go back home and communicate through social media with newly found friends and get a real sense if this is the place you want to move to or just a place you’d like to visit often or even just once in a while. Sometimes we make a huge mistake by going somewhere on vacation and becoming enamored with a new environment or worse with a single individual or some new friends and base a decision to move there just on that! Don’t do that!

jajajajaj long ago I had a friend visiting from the US, in Castilla y León, in March, I had told him it would be cold but he had assumed all Spain was hot and sunny and cold for me was mild weather. I have to admit it was similar for me when I went to San Francisco, it was around May-June and I didn't expect at all that it would be so cold and windy and wasn't prepared, at least it wasn't freezing!

coming from a country (uk) where personal space is an expectation, its hard to accept having to live in tiny flats, with all the noise you expect from asbo´s, eg noise all night, from partys, and now barking dogs, thin walls give you no privacy. obsession with our canine friends, most people have minimum of 2 dogs each, hence lots of dog poo in the streets. quite sad that these pets are forced to stay alone in tiny flats for hours at a time.

You can easily live in a low rise house if you're willing to commute15, 20 or even 30 kms from the city centre. Or even a chalet adosado which is similar to a townhouse in the English speaking world. You could even live virtually in the city centre if you're very wealthy of course. Most Spaniards prefer to live in an apartment as long as it's close to the city centre. Unlike Australians who are hell bent on living in a low rise house 60 kms away . It's a totally different mentality

Hey Stuart, and everyone watching. I have a question about something I noticed and cannot figure out - if you can help me shed some light. I live close to the M30 in Madrid. As you know it’s a large, fast and loud motorway (I think the limit is 100kph near me). Every morning around 6:15 am the traffic starts to get busier and louder. It then goes a bit quieter around 7:30 or so and back to busy around 8:20. Undoubtedly, this is very annoying but I’m not sure why it happens. I don’t think I’m near any special government offices, companies, or traffic junctions that may cause this surge at times. Or is it because people want to beat the speed ristrictions on the M30? Would anyone know if this relates to the work start times or some other mysterious reason that causes people to wiz by on the motorway at the ungodly hour of 6 in the morning?
@Daniel-nt5gh

I've heard a business pays 400€ a month in taxes to begin with? I'd love to hear more from you about laws and how they affect you, and more details about why it was difficult getting your residency and how you solved it. Practical matters. I don't think you ever get used to living in Spain, just when you think you have it sorted they change track, but for the most, about 2/3 years. After 16 years midday closing still gets me, and why can't they all use the same midday closing times.
@Daniel-nt5gh
@Daniel-nt5gh 2 жыл бұрын
Midday closing is just for Shops and restaurants, because they close really late, and the owner has the last world in saying when he wants to be open, also depends on the area, or the city, or the number of employees. But one thing that really piss me off is a tourist that came to visit and start to comment about how everybody is having siestas and how laid back the living is. F... them they are incapable of understanding the fact that shops closing at midday has nothing to do with everybody having siestas.

Whenever i go to spain i do try to live like a local and often stay in the old towns where i feel life is about as local as it will ever be. My first comment would be living in an apartment, i dont think i could handle that, walking half a mile or so to the car park and no garden oh and on the whole theres no elevator, i often wonder it thats why i see elderly folk sat on balconies, perhaps they cant get out a lot? Then the next thing would be that it appears that you can only buy from bakers, boutiques and sweet shops on Saturday afternoons and all day sunday. Its a long time since early closing Wednesday and Saturday with no sunday opening over here. If i lived in spain permanently id get over that and just muck in.

spainspeaks It’s one of the most isolated cities which doesn’t work in its favour. Since the end of the mining boom,I’m not sure what other industries can make it prosper. I know that the unemployment rate is higher than other states. The super inflated housing prices during the mining boom have been going south in free fall for years now. What’s sad about Perth’s problems is that the multinational mining giants reaped most of the wealth from the mining boom and none of the wealth went into the infrastructure of the state,especially Perth. That’s why you would hear the WA premier hark on about getting more GST revenue from the Federal Government.

I have been in Portugal now for almost thirty years and it wasnt difficult to adapt. Of course, having lived for 15 years in Brasilia, Brazil I was able to communicate with the natives immediately even lthough the two language varieties are not that similar. I have the best of both worlds since I live on the border with Spain, up in the north close to Galicia, and I can hop over to visit and speak Spanish (I can't speak Galego though and I find it hard to understand) whenever I want. I find the Spanish more outgoing than the Portuguese, who can be a bit sombre and defeatist at times, and I do love the mostly free Spanish highways. What I wouldn't like is the dubbed televison and movies, the bullfighting culture, the language battles and especially the closing of all businesses on Sundays. In Portugal we have all the television and movies in the original with subtitles and on Sunday all the supermarkets are open. We came at a good time, in the nineties, and became Portuguese quite quickly. Now it is harder and the economic situation is not that promising. But at least we have a stable government and no fear of any region asking for independence.

If you don’t mind the cotillera(gossip) which is 24/7 over here,then you’ll love it here if you like that kind of stuff. The food is great. Great food products and wines. Spain has varied landscapes and cultural distinctions but over all,they are pretty similar all over Spain. A lot of Spaniards will disagree with me on that point but one thing they all hold dear is the importance of family and the family structure. I think that is the glue to why Spain manages to soldier on through all their economic and political problems.

If you’re of retirement age,Spain could be a good option for a foreigner. If you’re still of working age and go there long term without a job,your time there will be pure hell. Not to say if you do get a job there that everything will work out. From what I’ve seen here,life just revolves around the family,going for paseos and to bars. To me,personally after a while,you get extremely bored with the same,monotonous routine. Especially when you have no friends or know anyone. There is a big difference from being friendly to being friends with someone. Never had that problem in Australia. In Australia I have friends from all nationalities and cultures. Here in Spain,it’s their way or the highway which I accept that’s how things roll here. It’s why I never stay here long.

I like your videos, but your train of thought on the way home was repetitive of the start and didn't offer anything else.

Au contraire , You must not have been really paying attention to what Stuart has been saying. He talked a lot about human nature, namely that very human and all too familiar trait: habit. Nothing is stronger than habit. -Ovid, Ars Amatoria Everyone is a prisoner of their habits. Stuart towards the end of his blog was intimating that if you want to live in a foreign country then you are going to have to adapt and give up your long-established habits and customs. Stuart is explaining that a physical move to a faraway country also demands a mental move as well. What he’s saying in a nutshell, is that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. This is life and everything is a trade-off. Yes, life is a hassle, and getting what you want will involve hassles. The Chains of Habit Are Too Light To Be Felt Until They Are Too Heavy To Be Broken ~Warren Buffett In a round-about way, Stuart is posing the question: Can you break the chains that bind you? And, let’s face it, we’re all confronted with this question. And if you can’t break your chains then you’re not going anywhere. Case closed. This is one of Stuart’s best videos because now he’s got me and probably lots of others thinking - “Well, are you going to do something or just dream?”

@@matthewjackson9615 thanks for the kind advice mate but you don't know me. You are preaching to the flock! Firstly I came through sever brain trauma and paralysis, multiple surgeries, rehabilitated so profoundly even for doctors, held a strong career physically in movie production for over 10 years, lived more than half my life in foreign countries, been a buddhist monk for some time etc. so I'm not even in that intimidation ball park, my middle name is 'challenge'. Far from close to understanding; if you feel that strongly, please transcribe any pertinent trains of wisdom he shared in the latter half that he didn't earlier. Au contraire indeed.

@@matthewjackson9615 exactly . well to me that was essentially the same thing that is intrinsically the same as the psychology of experience and part of the whole puzzle. There's a mirror in your reply, I guess you didn't read my answer friend; are you stuck on the offensive'?! He has always asked for comments as such and while I welcome his feedback, I don't need you to mansplain for him. 'Some people don't know, what they don't know'. (words to live by) Hoping you find your path to peace and happiness. :-)

I guess some questions cannot be answered honestly. How long does it take to get used to this country? It all depends on too many factors: your own personality, the people you encounter, the city you live in, your job (incomes)....
