In this vlog I look at whether it is still safe to live in Spain after the long economic crisis, huge unemployment levels, and recent political tensions in Catalonia.

I'm a Spaniard who moved to the UK almost a decade ago. I've always felt London in particular is unsafe (unlike the British countryside). When it comes to big cities, Madrid at least was super safe.

Agree Madrid is exceptionally safe. I feel safer walking around that city at 2 am than just about anywhere. The only place I find that tends to have a problem with groups of foreign of pickpockets is Barcelona. Though I've never ever had a problem. I also find the police in Madrid to be very friendly and you do see them everywhere holding the peace which is what there paid for. You hardly ever get to see police patrolling the streets in the big cities in Australia except when there hiding g with a radar gun. Australian police are also generally very arrogant.

I moved to Barcelona from Kent in the UK. I worked in London and always felt very unsafe even in the safer boroughs! Knife crime and general violent crime has shot up dramatically in recent years in London and general youth crime everywhere. In very glad I got out. I witnessed crime in broad daylight and there's plenty of gangs that the police do nothing about. I can walk around Barcelona without feeling threatened, feel safe and happy day or night and the Catalan people are pleasant (it's very easy the avoid the very obvious pickpockets who are not from Catalunya in the tourist areas).

So, do you think the culture of having bars on the windows as well as shutters of all houses is "overkill"?
@spainspeaks
@spainspeaks 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, it might be a little bit of an overkill. I remember when we moved in the first people to knock on the door were security companies and people who install the iron bars. They convince you that the area is unsafe so you end up putting them on the windows.
@bencarter6947
@bencarter6947 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think it's a social norm/convention thing. My partner, who's Spanish, is filled with lots of stories of break-ins etc and says she thinks England must be safer as we have none of that need for extra security there. Did you end up putting them on or have you gone bar-less?

Hi Stuart, after watching several of your daily reports just wanted to say keep up the good work as they are very well presented and very informative. My wife and I are UK citizens hoping to return to Spain again and become residents . Can’t come at the moment due to restrictions but now that could be made worse by the British Covid figures reputation. We have a property on the Costa Del Sol and are booked on the 5 July travelling by ferry to Santander then drive to Torre Del Mar which we have done many times before. Anybody any thoughts or advice?

I have been looking at Facebook live videos lately. There is a LIVE MAP feature that allows you to look for live videos around the world. I was curious to look at live videos happening in Spain. I was a bit surprised to see several videos from people who appear to be Latin American. I can tell by the way they speak Spanish versus actual Spaniards. Has there been an increase in immigration to Spain by Latin Americans in the past several years? Just curious.
@joselopez-yf9jq
@joselopez-yf9jq 6 жыл бұрын
Only in Madrid live around 610,800 Latin Americans (50% of them with Spanish nationality, probably obtained by parents or grandparents, since Spain facilitates these people to be in order) From 2004 to 2007 there was a massive arrival of Latin Americans looking for a better life. From 2009 to 2014 (economic crisis in Spain) the numbers were negative. Since 2015, the Spanish economy is beginning to improve and in Latin countries it is getting worse, they have Spain as a point of improvement to emigrate PD: sorry for this poor english , i use this type of videos for improve it

Anyone can advice on which areas of Spain has more organic food at reasonable rate? also anyone knows if Malaga is more expensive than other areas in the south in terms of food/rent?
@welshtoro3256
@welshtoro3256 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Luna. I have a small place in a tiny village in the Axarquia region west of Malaga and know the region pretty well. Malaga city is a vibrant coastal city on the up and is likely to be a more expensive than other smaller towns in the region of Malaga. Andalucia, if we include that as 'the south' is a very large region with massive variety. There are poorer parts where the rent will be lower, average parts and high end with correspondingly higher rent. Factor into that the type of property you want to rent as well. Organic food is unlikely to be in abundance in the less well off areas. If I'm honest it will be practically non-existent. You will find some specialist shops in large cities or sections in supermarkets in places frequented by foreign ex-patriots. There's an Eroski supermarket near me just outside Velez-Malaga and they have a decent organic section. There's very little organic meat or fresh vegetables and fruit though. Free-range is virtually non existent and that is true across the country except, as always, goats and sheep. What organic food you can find is reasonably priced.

Welsh Toro thank you very much for this detailed reply. I truly appreciate it. This was very helpful for my move as I have never been to Spain before. I have read on the website gmo-free-regions . Org that the province of Malaga has declared themselves GMO Free. Do you think perhaps in the poorer area the food is actually GMO free but they are not able to afford the “organic” certification ?
@welshtoro3256
@welshtoro3256 6 жыл бұрын
Luna, what you have understand is that plots of farmland in Malaga can be tiny to massive. There are probably millions of them. It is unregulated. Those that declare organic status will want to be checked for official verification and recognition. Those that don't wont be. Certain parts of Spain, particularly parts of Andalucia, are very poor. The people doing Organic are completely committed but they are a tiny minority. Agriculture is competitive and most of it is sold locally. Profit for 99% of producers is everything. I don't want to put you off your move to Spain. It is a great country and I love Andalucia but many people misunderstand this region. It has until very recently been exceptionally poor. Organic and Free Range is for a tiny elite or enlightened minority, especially if it costs more. Organic is reasonably priced when available but is not available in most places. Unless it is an 'Organic' shop you will get no answers regarding traceability either. There are a small amount of organic restaurants in the major cities but non existent anywhere else. The U.K is by far and away the best place for organic and free range. It's not great anywhere else. Hope that's some help. Glad to be of service. WT

In Galicia. You can still buy products from the gardens of small farmers, not industrial. Homemade eggs, milk, fruits, vegetables and fresh fish of the day. Not only in the villages, but also in the cities.

Hi! I'm checking out villas in Marbella for a while now. Considering to buy one over there. What I see that there is a shitload ammount, a very very suprising ammount of million dollar+ villas for sale there. Thousands! It looks like all the people want to move away... or at least that is the impression I'm getting. What could it possibly be? -I'm not getting a straight forward answer from the realestate ppl tho... :)

Many people bought them to sell at a better price when Spain comes out of the crisis, its a business. Spain, 15 years ago, was more expensive than the U.K., if we talk about property prices, the people is waiting for it. Anyway, I'm living in Toledo, I don't think I'm buying a house over there, at least my pocket doesn't allow me to do it. Good luck! And if you haven't been in Spain, you'll love it!

I love these videos, but are you able to tell us where you are are going to when you are in the car? It is kind of weird to just see these these random drives in the country (or city) and have no idea where you are going... Mind you, I prefer the exterior shots to the ones where it is just you driving the car!

i stayed in the centre for a weekend about 5 years ago, really nice, loved it, cant wait to go back, no mithers what so ever. a little noisy early hours perhaps but isnt that what it always is in spain? you have to go to the horchateria de santa catolina, the home of horchata, if only to ask for fartons.

It's all about what you're looking for, given that you can actually choose which region to live. North is great food and beautiful nature but not so sunny and people can be more introverted. South is great food, friendly people but way too hot in summer. All the middle fringe is a bit of everything, and mountain ranges can be found anywhere in Spain. Mid-sized cities can also be a great place to live in Spain. I come from Alicante and it's not too big, not too small, cheap and cheerful, lovely locals!

Hello. There are some massive robberies on the highways when you drive from France to Valencia !!! And the next problem is the burglars that take your house, live there and ruin your house, especially in Mallorca. Of course this often is because people from other EU countries buy houses, only come for vacation once and a while and do not want to spend the money on a housekeeper which has an eye on the property nor alarm systems. And I just heard some cases at the Costa Blanca lately...
