Today, I'm talking to the artist! So many artist have trouble getting their artwork represented by a gallery. They desire to have their art in a gallery, but have no idea how to approach an art gallery. I initially thought to make this one video throwing in all of my tips. But I thought it would be more beneficial for me to break it down for you over a number of videos. Today we are talking about how to prepare yourself and your art for the approach.

I'm Moriah Alise, I am an Art Collector, an art dealer, an art teacher (teaching painting) and an overall art enthusiast. I founded and directed an art gallery in Houston, Texas for nearly 3 years, and gained a ton of experience and knowledge I would love to share with you all.

frame is art dialogue on all levels. from art market research & my perspective, art culture, to common art talk. as i chose to begin my second gallery, alise gallery, i wanted to embark on a journey that allowed me to have open dialogue with collectors and artist globally that could somehow result in those in the art community learning from one another. its important to be culturally aware as collectors, investors, advisors, artist, and dealers. but whats often missed are the intricacies of the actual speculative, and monetary market, whats behind the culture. lets talk about it!

Whats up Yall! let's talk a bit. What is your experience with seeking gallery representation?

I had my first gallery representation in 2010. I started painting in 2008. I was not seeking a gallery or to sell my art. It was an accidental meeting with a gallerist that turned into a disaster. Lol... I even had my car repossessed in front of the whole gallery at my first show. Crazy After my first shoe the gallery owner kept me hanging on for months promising to put my work in multiple art fairs. I was the only black artist she had. All of her other artist got to show at Art Basel, Art Palm Beach, exclusive collector parties etc. She was always in the big shows but always found an excuse to leave me out. On top of that the crazy lady was monitoring my FB to make sure I was not dealing with any other galleries in the area. One day she just cut me off by email saying I can do better by myself. Now she had sent me an email 5 hours earlier saying that she was coming over to pick out paintings to show a collector. She cut me off without reason and I did not ask. She was well known so I was told not to complain or she would black ball me. To this day she acts like nothing ever happened when I see her. She tried to hug me at Art Basel last year and I just shook her hand. Sorry I am ranting but that was my first experience. It has not gotten better unfortunately dealing with galleries. I kind of gave up and do it on my own. I have built a nice clientele but a gallery would make things a lot easier. Blessings!

You are correct that cohesiveness will buy you a spot on a gallery, an instagram followship, and ultimately, buyers (be it in the auction/gallery high art market, or even just Etsy). However, I consider art pieces that are too similar to each other (that a LOT of high art artists do for years on end) to be the signs of artistic DEATH. As an artist, I don't like doing the same thing over and over again. One day I'll paint abstract with acrylics, the next day an oil portraiture, the next day a mixed media landscape, and maybe do a collage, and the fourth one watercolor fairies for a children's book. I can't stand doing the same thing over and over again. It is the reason why I stopped my profitable collage art in 2018: too much of the same thing (at one point I had 375k followers in all social media). Enough was enough. Heck, even imagining myself as a musician I would probably jump genres on each song. I'm not interested in beating dead horses. If I already had the experience of one kind of thing, I don't need it for a second time. If the customers instead want to see only one side of me, then they better not buy. Since I moved to different mediums and ideas, my followship plummeted, my sales too. But I haven't looked back. I'm more free as an artist NOW, than I was in my collage days. Better to get a second job. Also, when I started my collage journey in 2012, I decided early on that I won't get involved with galleries. On PURPOSE. I wanted my artistic freedom. Eventually, by 2015 my work was very successful, but only specific ideas were selling. Every time I'd post a less pop collage (e.g. an abstract one), the Likes would plummet. People wanted only specific things. In the beginning, I was giving it to them, because the sales were off the roof. But then I realized, that I've done to myself exactly what a gallery would do to me: asking me to do the same type of artwork every time. So, I walked away from collage. Now, I just paint whatever I feel like. Who cares what others think?

I have recently opened an art gallery in Houston, Tx and I will give you a few things that I and my curator look for in artists. The artist style/collections, there social media connections, how committed they are to their work as an artist, someone that pushes their art and the gallery on their social media connections, and a team player. I feel like you made good points, but personally I think the most important thing is focus on the work first. That whole make a collection thing make sense, and you are right, it is intimidating....but as some body that's just getting started, focusing my work rather than the making a collection has lead to me actually having a much more genuine/authentic collection despite that not being my intention and more importantly I improves as an artist. Also, there are many ways to make it, most importantly, do it for the art...when it's time to approach collectors etc, if it's a good piece of work they will buy it. I've never sold a singles piece of work, so I could be wrong. But, I don't agree with being told what to paint/produce, even if it's just a collection....

Create in collection hmmm nice great advice yes we have to explain our work yes look at the pleasing aesthetics and sure fallin in love with the story awwwww so nice that's how you manifest that vibe in the artist/ but no matter what one paints each has their own interpretation/ business is only good when people pay for the art / I just take my art with me around the globe and gift to people but sure now its true work is worthy/ but after your conversation I understand that is the power of manifestation/ yes preparation/ breaking it down I love ur vibe because what you gave me is yes next time we are not clutterd we are more organized and yes money really matters because we can actually feel the joy from the hard work we put in and receiving accolades or just a place in rhe heart is sometimes 😢 more joyful than money/ but sure one day thanks for the great wise words😊 absolutely helpful God bless u /🎉😊

...Another reason galleries and the world miss out on incredible artists is bc great artists are usually so mentally consumed with being great at their craft that they can't possibly deal with the bs of commerce. So it's on the galleries to track down greatness and see it in an artist, even if that artist hasn't done any organizing (bc they're too busy BEING AN ARTIST). So it's also galleries' commercial focus that leaves the world too often short of too many great artists. There should instead be a completely different business model that proactively mines our human potential and seeks to elevate our entire species.

Every gallery is different. But what I can say is gallery’s are here to help artist sell, what they want is the confidence in knowing they can sell it. It's likely a gallery will consider an artist if their work isn’t selling outside of the gallery. They just have to believe they can.

I found this to be very helpful, but I find it hard to price out my work 😕 I think it's worth 500 and up depending on how large the size or small Okay, so here's my question. How do you convince the gallery that I am what they want? my work will sell. I'm really good with marketing. I would already have a line of t shirts and trucker hats and buttons, so something will sell My work is tribal urban and political with a dash of Spiritualism. Self taught work on found materials. Example a mud flap from the back of an eighteen wheeler. Old discarded drop cloth Stuff like that. Anyway very informative I love your vibe.😊❤😊❤😊

My latest interaction with a gallery lasted 17 sec on the phone. I only had time to ask if they were accepting submissions before they hung up on me, the gallery website literally said to call. I hate galleries who have an open invitation on their website or social to submit artwork/portfolios, and then are annoyed at you for contacting them.

Hi ! Thank you so much for this video ! I'm actually putting together my first art gallery. I would say it's a little different in how I was able to get the opportunity. It's a rental location that is open to everyone that wants to display their art. I figured I do it just to get a feel of how it would be. I'm glad I found this video early on before hand, because all my art is heartfelt , but when talking about it I could find it difficult. Some pieces you may look at it and can get an obvious idea of what's going on and some may not, and may have a deeper meaning. I also haven't thought of making my art as a collection. All my pieces look different from each other, but they all represent something that falls into one category. Don't know if that would be considered having a collection lol, but overall again thank you so much for this video, it was very helpful !!

More to the point regarding artists being able to talk about their individual works and/or a collection or series of works: If you aren't able to coherently and honestly speak about your work why should a gallerist, curator want to feature/represent you? Even more importantly, why would anyone want to buy it if as the artist you don't know why you're creating your work or series... As a curator it can be annoying to get a clear narrative about an aritst's works I'm really drawn to if the artist isn't able to talk about their own work let alone their aesthetic and process. As Moriah stated, not talking about your work in an arrogant way. Also not in a way that's all fluff, BS or that totally misses the mark of your narrative is and what your art "says" visually. Emerging, "unknown", unrepresented and uncollected artists who are pricing their work at unrealistic prices (i.e. $25K, $50K+...) especially with the reasoning of "Well, one day someone may buy it for that price, so why not?" will instantly be dismissed by curators, gallerists, agents and patrons.
