Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting, and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the fourth in a five-part video series on Getting Your Book Published. This part is called, Getting Published.
You’ve signed your contract and we are ready to get moving.
Your publisher will send specific guidelines to submit your full manuscript including text and all images or tables. Follow their directions very closely and don’t cut corners. Start off your relationship with them on a positive note.
Likely, your publisher will send your manuscript out to reviewers to either verify the content or the marketability of the work. This may take some time. They may come back with very specific, or general, suggestions or changes to improve the work. Be open minded to them. Assuming you make some or all of the changes, you will resubmit to them for final approval.
At some point, the publisher will come back and officially accept your work and they will say they are proceeding with publication. Congrats again. You are on your way.
The next steps be editing and then page make up, or typesetting, by the publisher. They will likely send you digital page proofs for your review. Take your time and go through the proofs very closely for any unintended errors. This is your last chance. This is not the time to rewrite or drastically revise the book.
While all that is going on, the publisher will (hopefully) show you several cover designs for your input. A reminder, this is their decision. Don’t push too hard here. Nonetheless it is very important. The cover and title and retail price make up major decision points in readers potentially buying the book. Make sure the cover design can be shrunk down to a small thumbnail size for marketing and still be readable. Get a final PDF of the front cover for your marketing efforts.
Also, the publisher’s marketing department will likely be in touch for the initial description and plans for your work. A critical step.
