Now is the time to get your instrument rating! Yes it is hard. Yes it is difficult but you need to do it for 3 reasons: SAFETY. SAFETY. SAFETY.
Being an instrument rated pilot will make you a safer pilot and make you a better pilot. Ill tell you about my experience while I was getting my instrument rating, what happened to me and how I started to think differently. Getting an instrument rating will maximize your confidence level to new heights.

Got my PPL at 54, purchased a Cherokee about 6 hours into my training. Instrument Rating at 55 , I’m 57 and working on my Commercial, then CFI. Instrument was one of the most rewarding things I’ve accomplished (since my PPL).

Over 50 and working on my PPL. Initially I figured I would be fine with just VFR, but I am beginning to see how an IFR rating adds a margin of safety to the whole thing. I am certain, though, that my weekly flying budget would NOT support a 6 day week, 4-6 hour day schedule!

On your landings: check out the videos from The Finer Points on using left horizon visuals so you aren't peering over the nose. It's all about the Lindbergh Reference. It will help in many landing situations especially if you move up in plane and can't see over the nose in landing.

@williamfahey4092
@williamfahey4092 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Sill depends on the plane you own. There is an hourly cost even if you own your own plane. Add to that the hourly cost of the CFII. Then there is the coursework. This varies greatly. I like Bold Method and MzeroA. Having said all of that, not even close to $50k. A concentrated course renting a plane is going to be under $12,000 depending on where you live.
@djbred18
@djbred18 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Sill to piggy back off What William said, with your own airplane, doing part 61 your hourly rate goes down significantly. You’re basically just paying for the instructor hourly rate plus fuel. Better way to go imo.

I got my ppl in 98 took 2 years and $8000. I got my IFR last year in 2 months and $1500 all in. I used the King written course and took the exam before I started IFR training. King also has a check ride video, I highly recommend it. The key is to find an instructor who has availability and is not going to squeeze you for every dollar. The way I saved money, was after a few hours we did a cross country, after that the rest of my flights were cross country’s so I could get 2 to 3 hours for each event. It only takes 15 hours of dual, the rest of the hours you can fly with a safety pilot. P.S. the ppl cost includes aircraft rental, my IFR does not.
