SCRIPT
Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting, and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the first in a five-part video series on Getting Your Journal Article Published. This part is called, Getting Started on Your Manuscript.
You have been thinking about writing an article about your work or research. Congratulations. You have taken the first step in the process that will allow you to share your findings with your community of interested scholars as well as advance your career. The good news is the road to publication is a definable, process oriented one. I am happy to break the steps down for you.
First, start with a purpose. Understand why you want to pursue article publication, whether it be for tenure, to advance your field of study, to gain exposure in your area, to support your grant work, or something else, understanding your motivations can inform many decisions you will face.
Next is to define your idea or topic. Do you have new or unique findings? This question will be one of the top criteria that reviewers will use when considering your article. No journal wants to publish an article that goes over the same ground as other works in the field. Focus on one single message or concept. Be able to summarize your article in a short elevator ride. And quality is the key to getting published. Everyone has read articles or seen presentations that have stayed with them for a long time. It may be a high bar to aim for, but you must shoot as high as you can.
Next is to develop a plan and timeline. Create detailed steps addressing each task to be done. Make each step as granular as possible. Working in small chunks can help make the project seem much more achievable. Set up your plan as a spreadsheet which will allow you to edit it as the project progresses. Start to develop your task list now and add to it as you begin your journey. The list should be updated through the whole writing and publishing process. Equally important to your plan is the creation of a realistic timeline. Being overly optimistic or pessimistic does not serve you well. For each step in the plan, assign dates for completion. And you should have a firm end date for submission and potentially for publication. Keep yourself accountable to the schedule you create. I have a sample plan for you to use and customize. See the Notes below for where to download it.
The final factor to consider as you start your journey is who the intended reader or the audience is. Web searches, abstracting and indexing services, and impressive global electronic distribution will make your article available to a broad group of people. Look at the backgrounds of the authors publishing in your target journals. Considering who your ideal or target readers will be is essential, including their level of experience within their profession.
Choosing a single group and writing specifically for them will produce optimal results. Also, deciding what level a person is within this profession (novice or leader) helps determine the level of the content that you are presenting. Considering both factors will help hone your message, increase the focus of your article, and increase your chances of publication. Do not try to tailor your article toward everyone. This will only ensure it being of interest to no one. Targeting an ideal reader will be beneficial to you during the writing process by keeping your message focused.
