Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting, and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the third in a five-part video series on Getting Your Journal Article Published. This part is called, Writing, Editing, & Reviewing Your Manuscript.
You have defined your topic or focus. Your research is done. Your literature review is complete. Now time to get down to work.
List the likely sections your manuscript will be divided up into. Of course, you will have an abstract, but this should be written last so it can summarize the whole work. Other sections to consider are an introduction, literature review, materials and methods, results, and then discussion or conclusion, followed by your references. Your actual headings will vary by what is the norm in your subject area.
To get started, pick a middle section, perhaps the literature review or methods section. Write a draft of that section. Then move onto one section after another, ending with discussion or conclusions. When writing, remember short and focused is better than wordy and dense. No one ever said, “I wish that journal article was longer.”
Figures and tables are key elements of many manuscripts. Some sophisticated readers may read only your abstract and review your figures and tables to develop an understanding of the work you are presenting. Choose figures and tables wisely. Make sure they have him impact and are not just extra material or window dressing. They need to potentially stand by themselves so titled or caption appropriately. Fewer figures and tables with great impact is preferable to over doing it.
Remember your reference list is important. Give proper credit at all times to the work you used to create your manuscript. And cite all classic references in this area.
Finish up with a draft of the abstract that summarizes the work. Don’t hold back the good stuff or your results to entice people to read your article. That doesn’t work.
And don’t forget a great title for your paper. One that is more than a label, but that draws the reader into what your focus is.
After you are done, take a break and then dive into editing. Read your article through several times. Reading it aloud can help you identify confusing content or awkward wording. Run an advance grammar check at each stage of your editing to ensure you are putting your best work forward.
Be aware of the style manual that is used in your field and make sure your writing and work conform closely with it.
Before submission, make sure your manuscript has been read by at least two colleagues or friends not associated with the work. Give them permission to give you all forms of feedback: content, format, writing. When you get it back from them, take a pause and seriously evaluate their feedback. The more you embrace this concept, the greater chance your intended journals will consider your work.
After review and your changes, you are getting close to submission. Give it one more read and then a grammar check. Now you are ready to go.
