I am a hobby sax player and blooming proud. Love your lessons Jamie, keep making them. What helps me is thinking about how you want that piece of music to sound, and have that in your mind as you are playing. How you want your vibrato to sound, have a mental picture. My teacher told me that.

Jamie, thank you again for the continued insights into improving the basic tenets of this instrument, the sax A phon (short a sound please). I've found that watching myself in a mirror helps me focus on relaxing the shoulders and opening up the neck to get better airflow. Break a leg, sir!

Thanks Jamie. I try to work on all of those. My three biggest faiils (for what it's worth) as a beginner in the practise room: - having no clear idea what I want to practise each session - not using a metronome, or setting it way too fast - not being self-critical enough about tone and articulation when practising at very slow metronome speeds. I try to bunch up my lower lip cushion as much as possible, and seeking some support with the teeth, without folding over them. The frustrating part is that the tiniest of adjustments can make that sweet spot a hit or miss. Another honorable mention: (which I suffer from:) the actual amount of mouthpiece I take in. Too little, and I'm choking the reed. Too much, and I have no tonal control whatsoever.

So, just curious, ever since i started playing saxophone (tenor) a long time ago i played it with my lower lip curled in quite a bit. Automatically i started playing with a lot of subtoning, which i didn't mind since i like playing jazz and i liked the dark and fluffy sound i could make! It made me think of saxophonists like Ben Webster, and i really like that type of playing! In later years, my newer teacher has been trying to guide me to play with a more open sound, although it feels incredibly uncomfortable to play like that and i have much less control, especially in the lower register (lower notes). The question is, is it possible to have your own type of embouchure even though it is considered incorrect or should i just keep trying to get rid of it? Trying to get a more "correct" embouchure? Edit: I also adore Stan Getz, and he too has quite a bit of lower lip curled inwards! But oh that sound!

my KZbin channel features me playing, rather than teaching although I could do that too since I played for 51 years. And I will say that: you use the term hobby saxophonist and I think going forward, given the lack of money making opportunities actually playing music, all of us are sort of hobby players. By that I mean we are self benefactors and that we need another income stream outside of music, for some people that will be teaching whether it's in person or on KZbin or whatever, but for many, I think it should be whatever they were going to do if they did not play saxophone, it took me years to figure that out many years ago of course, but for me, that was being a lawyer.

Hi Jamie, I watch your videos from time to time. I love your enthusiasm. However, coming from across the pond, Canada, I must say that calling aspiring saxophonists, “hobby” saxophonists doesn’t sit right with me. Many of us have been playing for many years, even playing professionally and to be called a “hobby” sax player sounds demeaning. I’m sure you don’t intend it to sound that way, but that is my gut reaction. Take care and thanks for all you do.

One of most hobby self taught players wrongly made and overused feature is bending notes... stop doing it!! You don't need to bend every second note! The problem is it gives the player a self sense of coolness. IT IS NOT COOL at all
