2 things: 1. This used to be the best version of wok hei dry hokkien mee, but when it was operated by the late 1st gen owner whom unfortunately passed on not too long ago. The fact that the noodles look wet is a departure from its usual style and perhaps the 2nd gen needs some more time in achieving consistency. $10 portion used to be bigger 2. Now the reigning best version of this would be from Swee Guan in lor 29, operated by the eldest bro of the 1st gen.

Congrats on another new series! Surprised nobody recommended Kim's Hokkien Mee at Eunos... That's another one with lots of history... My personal fave is closed which was at AMK ave 5 block 500 plus market... My childhood HKM growing up... Going to love this series again.. thanks again for awesome content💪💪💪

new series! :) I'm not the Hokkien Mee expert, but my go to is at Whampoa Food Centre (the afternoon one). The stall is called Singapore Fried Hokkien Mee. Do try it! I would love to see how it stacks up and where else I should be going!

Recently, i tried the hokkien mee at One Punggol hawker ctr, wet and really good. Comparable to the one i always eat at Lau Pa Sat.

This was always the best in SG as far as I was concerned, run by the late Alex and his family. They did everything the traditional way, over charcoal. The broth was always superbly balanced between sweet, salty and umami. The prawns and sotong fresh, moist and never dried out. The moisture of the noodle was always spot on, and remained so even if you took it home in the opeh leaf. Next door inside is also a fantastic pineapple satay stall.

swee guan (lor 29), ah hock (chomp chomp), Nam sing (old airport road), Hainan (golden mile), youfu (golden mile). Geylang Lorong 29 (east coast) when on form is amazing, but recently I had it when it was fried by a lady and it was sadly very disappointing: I think my own fried version was better and I’m not joking.

Agree but I think before we get too far into the series... Why not do a comparator - for each stall, maybe do one plate just off the pan and one at home now 1hr post dabao. Science!

hey for this series i feel like you should revisit each and everyone of the good and bad ones in the end before drawing your conclusion. because out of so many reviews this dish can be the most inconsistently prepared

The stall has moved to another location in East Coast but nearer to Siglap Centre. Ate there twice ; one time for Hokkien mee and another time for the orh luak and oyster oyster. Standard for the oyster dishes has gone down so much. The worse part for me, however,is that the hokkien mee is nowhere as good as before. So sad that it is no more my fav or go-to place for hokkien mee. I had liked their pork belly satay but not gonna bother to patronise the stall since they can't even get their most famous dish right😢

I think calamansi is a type of lime. personally I find it more fragrant but that might just be me.

Geylang HK Mee is the best imo. Will be pleasantly surprised if you conclude otherwise, but will definitely go to try anything you think is better than this. Idk about everyone else but I’ve tried this outlet and the OG outlet and I find that the OG outlet produces better quality HK mee. Me personally I think you should try the OG outlet for a better sense of overall comparison.

The best Hokkien mee has to be the one at Prawnography ... be it size wise, ingredients wise or even taste wise . Being a Hokkien mee lover, I was actually contemplating visiting this store again. My last visit was ... a few years ago. But after watching this clip ... has killed my interest. To quench my Hokkien mee thirst, I would stick to Prawnography.

LETS GOooooooo, but $10 for that plate of noodle.. Inflation is real man... Sadly, my favorite hokkien mee has closed down and the cook went to take over the parents morning business selling the famous Lor Mee and soup prawn noodle at Hougang Green. Have asked if he will ever sell hokkien mee again but so far the answer has always been "Not anytime soon". Hope to see other recommendations!

I agree very much that Wok Hei is not the key in HKM, and might get a bit touchy if someone disagrees with me on that haha. Though the one time I ate at Geylang Lorong 29, it had a lot of Wok Hei

You are right on the portion. They probably gave you a $8 plate. Nowadays this stall is getting arrogant & pricey. Taste was much better when the original chef does the frying.

Bro, you should try Bedok corner Hokkien mee for a taste of halal Hokkien mee! Packs a punch even without the pork lards. But must make sure uncle is cooking

Geylang 29 Hokkien Mee East Coast Road has been my family favourite stall for many years despite the travel distance. My last visit was pretty lackluster since the owner, Alex See, passed away last year, passing the torch to the next generation. Today, is the 2nd time I am buying from them hoping that the last visit was just a one off bad day. Although the taste of the noodles were pretty decent, it was not as good as when the owner was monitoring the one cooking (He was known to throw away an entire batch when it’s not up to standard.). However, today’s overall stardard was pretty disappointing. Here’s why: 1. Fresh crunchy juicy prawns were changed to tasteless frozen prawns. The same type usedat cheap steamboat buffets. And these were overcooked till tough. 2. Removal of pork belly slices. 3. Removal of freshly fried crispy pork lard. 4. Reduction on the amount of chives 韭菜 to a sprinkling. 5. Overcooked sotong till it became tough like rubber bands. 6. Chilli started to smell sour. Once bitten, twice shy. Twice bitten, never try. Since this brother is no longer around to maintain the standard, we can always go to the other brother at Swee Guan as he, like Alex, doesn’t compromise standards.

Swee Guan @ Geylang Lor 29 is full of wokhei & is a relative of this East Coast Road stall. The price is even more heavenly. The queue is insane.

Yay hokkien mee!! Looking forward to this new series! I'm suprised that wok hei is not that big a deal for you haha. It's something I always look out for esp when eating hokkien mee from hawkers, cos I feel like it's almost impossible to achieve in a home kitchen.

Prawnography Novena Gardens. Good wok hei, plenty of fried lard and fresh seafood. 12 dollars for premium version with scallops. Big portion good for 2 pax

hihi my reco is pretty under the radar, but the one @ Shunfu Market (Huat Heng) is my childhood fav! bit on the salty side at times, and only available on weekends (apparently uncle is recovering from heart problems), but is one of the best PLS PLS TRY it is worth the trip 😋😋

This is why I don't buy hokkien mee as often. The hawkers are often stingy and skimp A LOT. When they do that....all u get is plain tasteless yellow noodles. Most of the time, I end up buying CKT, instead of Hokkien Mee, from the same hawkers coz the soy sauce and cockles can save shitty plain yellow noodles. Wok hei is a bonus in that instance.
