Work in research lab and in the NFPA 70 handbook over many years have shown that wrapping conductors around the screw with the plate on top is the securest method and avoids poor connections which is subject to arcing and heat. You can see some heat damage around the stab in connections at the back those plates holding the conductors in your receptacle they also weaken over time and often are not seated properly by people in the first place.
@ElectricianToolDeals Жыл бұрын
I agree that back stabs are not the preferred method by our team. We prefer to use the compression plate on the side as it has a torque spec of approximately 15 in/lbs. Additionally, the compression plate type gives a larger surface area to contact the point of termination. This keeps the wire from moving more efficiently. Now if I have receptacles that do not have compression plates I will wrap the wire in a clockwise fashion around the screw. This insures that the wire tightens as you tighten the screw. Lastly, in the case of stranded wire the only option is compression terminals or ul listed fork terminals. Thank you for your input and Have A Great Day.
@mathman0101 Жыл бұрын
@@ElectricianToolDeals I can literally count the number of electricians on one hand that would torque a receptacle I do it religiously as per NFPA but so many electricians don’t. For them torquing only happens in a breaker panel. For fine stranded wire at least you can put a non-insulated UL ferrule on them and they then could be put under a compression plate

I bought this Klein tool and it does not light up on outlets that do not already have power(hot) (as he demonstrated) and also does not find the circuit breaker for any outlet that has no power (not hot). He says this but it didn't connect in my brain the first time. I replaced an outdoor GFCI that had tripped and wouldn't reset. It worked at first and has now tripped again turning off 4 outlets and I cannot locate the circuit breaker for it since there is no power flowing to them. When I did try to locate the breaker for this gfci when replaced and working the Klein tool still did not reliably locate the circuit. The red light kept flashing on 2 separate breakers. Can't figure out why the gfci keeps tripping. Probably moisture. Good video . Thank you!
@ElectricianToolDeals3 ай бұрын
That is the only downfall of this tool. It doesn't work without power. Also be sure you wave over every breaker wait 5 seconds then try to locate. It has to read the panel to be accurate. Hope this helps

Thanks for the comment. If the GFCI is the first thing on the circuit and everything else is on the load side, then everything else will die when it trips. You could simply pig tail the load side wire to the line side and bypass the protection for everything down the line. Before you do this, make sure that nothing is within 6 feet of a water source or outside.

Is it normal for there to be two GFCI outlets side by side? There's two in the kitchen; one clicks when you press "Test" and "Reset" and the other not only doesn't click but the "Test" button can't be pressed at all. My problem is a power outage in a single bedroom, a side of the living room, and one light in the kitchen - they appear to go out together. QUESTION: The GFCI in my bathroom still has power; however, the "Reset" button recent tripped and is now extended outward. The "Test" button remains pressed in. But, every time I press the "Reset" button back in, the "Reset" button presses itself back out. I tried pressing every button in the Circuit Box; however, nothing fixed the problem. @@ElectricianToolDeals Thank you for taking the time to reply. Where I live in Michigan we have gotten rain the last several days. And according to Comcast, the "Humidity" was at 97%. So you may be correct about the factor of "Moisture." But, I left the air conditioner on all day. In the evening, I tried pressing the "Reset" button. This time the "Reset" button properly pushed back into the wall the way it is supposed to. Do you think I should still get a new GFCI? That particular GFCI is over a decade old. But, the pain in the rear end is I'm disabled with epilepsy and don't have the money to hire an electrician. Do you think this is something easy enough to do on my own? Also, what is the difference between at 15 amp and 20 amp device? Why is the 15 amp device preferred?
@ElectricianToolDeals5 ай бұрын
It may be ok, but I normally change them anyway. The reason for the 15 amp is because you won't be plugging in any 20 amp devices on that circuit, and you also don't know what size the wire is. 15 amp is plenty and safer.

@@ElectricianToolDeals Is a "Dehumidifier" a 15 amp device or a 20 amp device? I'm just wondering because for the first time in about five years I plugged in a large "Dehumidifier" into that bathroom wall outlet. I did so because about 20 feet away at the end of the house I was refilling a "Cool Humidifier" with "Distilled Water," but I accidentally spilled some of the water on the floor in a bedroom. I wanted to help dry things out in the bedroom. I thought using the "Dehumidifier" in the middle of the house where the bathroom is would help the carpeting dry out faster in that bedroom. It was a few days after this when the GFCI started having problems in the bathroom. But, for the last couple days the GFCI has not had problems now. Do you think that "Dehumidifier" could have made things "Moist" the way you refer to? Or could this large "Dehumidifier" been too powerful for the GFCI?

A contractor plugged something into the power strip to a refrigerator yesterday in our garage and blew the power in half the garage. I knew that there was a GCFI outlet that was connected to the outlets on the north side so I tried the reset button, but it wouldn’t reset. No click. The GCFI plug ins were dead as expected, but I pulled the GCFI out of the junction box and found the bottom terminals of the outlet were hot. Nothing in the circuit breaker box was tripped. I plugged the refrigerator into a different source on the south side of the garage. Unplugged the RV that was connected to an outside outlet on the dead side of the garage. Now nothing is plugged into the dead side of the garage except the power strip that was plugged into the refrigerator. Still the GCFI would not reset. I found the correct circuit breaker to disconnect the GCFI, checked with the tester, then swapped out the GCFI with a new one.
