We had a GFCI in the kitchen that has worked for years and suddenly the other night, it tripped without tripping the breaker. Hubby has been working on this for 2 days trying to figure out what happened and trying to fix it. He even picked up a new GFCI with a light to show power and still couldn't get it to work (even when showing power to it). He always gets pissed when I show up and fix a problem that he is having with something little or simple (like switching the wires). I asked if he had the wires switched and he just gave me that look and proceeded to tell me how he matched white to white and hot to hot. After dinner, I watched this video while he was busy with another project, I opened it up and took a look. Ours is a beginning of run of circuit outlet with in and out wires. I watched this video and sure enough, it matters. I switched the hot from top to bottom and bottom to top. Flipped the breaker on and sure enough, we now had power. He hates when I am right, but I had to show him that it worked. When I explained what I had done, he asked how I fixed it and explained that he didn't think it mattered. Thanks for the video showing how important it is even after years of it working before, though I don't know how it was wired before because I didn't remove it. Thanks again!!! Great video!!!

Question: Does the Test BUTTON on the GFCI push the current to the ground conductor or to the neutral conductor.
@MountaineerOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Great question here is better answer than I can give.. Btw... Great question... A GFCI outlet tester measures the current from one side of the power source to the other side. If the currents are not the same then some current could be leaking in a dangerous and unsafe way. It is a fast acting circuit breaker that will shut off power if there is a ground fault. The ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) tester is used to reduce the risk of electrical shock generated from outlets by testing the electrical circuitry to see if there is imminent danger. Electrical spikes can cause electrical fires or physical harm, such as skin burns or even the heart to stop. The GFCI tester measures the current so that you can be protected against the ground fault, which is the most common form of electrical shock. The outlet tester is used to better understand the status of the electrical current in a specific outlet. It works by comparing the amount of current traveling from one end to the other along the circuit conductors. This measurement is used to determine if change or repair is needed to the electrical wires. Uneven current or spikes are not safe and GFCI testers are designed to protect against electrical fires, electrical overheating, or prevent damage to the protective insulation of existing wires.

I recently had an outdoor GFCI trip during rain and it wouldn't reset (even after I determined how to re-establish power). KZbin told me to check other GFCI's in the house, and I found a tripped culprit 100 feet away next to an upstairs sink. 1. Does this mean that an electrician had to run special wiring between the two outlets? (The outdoor outlet was installed 30 years after the house was built, and this incident is when I found out that there was no breaker-box switch for that outlet. Frustrating!) 2. I had a normal outlet on-hand and replaced the GFCI and weatherproofed it. Will it work? Thanx!

Thank you. However I have an unusual problem. I’m in the garage and plugged in a full size freezer. The next morning the freezer was working fine; all good. A week later the freezer is Not working and nothing else on that circuit is working. Nearby GFCI circuits are all working. No circuit breaker at the panel is tripped. In checking the rest of the GFCI circuits in the house there was one on the extreme other side of the house in the kitchen which is not working although the other GFCI outlets in the kitchen are still working. This makes no sense to me. Have you any other ideas please? Thank you.

Without being there and if they are in separate circuits, I would say maybe you had a spike from the electric company. It's a hard one to diagnose without being there

First off never trust a tick tracer. Always verify with a meter. You have to make sure that the hot is on the line side.

hi there I have a GFCI outlet in my old fifth wheel bathroom end it also has a light switch next to it which powers the four or five lightbulbs above the mirror now when I plug in some thing that doesn't take much power into that plug in power is it like a work light but when I plug in a shop vac it doesn't power enough very low power barely gets it running also if I have something plugged into it and then flip the light switch on it will shut off power to that outlet and one more thing the outlets down the trailer on the same side it if I plug something into them in power it on it will make the lights above the mirrorGo on and off slowly without the switch being turned on any ideas? I'm thinking I'm going to replace that outlet and see if that makes a difference
@MountaineerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna guess maybe you have a loose connection. Did you take it apart and see if you had a wire broken or loose?
@joesmith-fi1sx3 жыл бұрын
@@MountaineerOutdoors i did ! i took it apart and im not sure if it was broken or if it broke when i took the oulet out but it was the bottom right white wire but the outlet was and still is upside down. so top left white / positive i believe hah. still learning outlets. but it does the exact same thing with the nrw GFCI outiet and wired just as it was. whites on the one side blacks on the other and the groud. it looks like it all was original tight wiring and original looking outlet. im not sure what to check next. the outlets on the other side of rv work normal. your thinking loose connection somewhere? ill have ti go through more. could the switch have anything to do with it ? thanks for responding.
@MountaineerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
It very well could be the switch. If it's just one side it definitely could be a loose wire do you have full voltage at the receptacle 120?
@joesmith-fi1sx3 жыл бұрын
@@MountaineerOutdoors more insight to it is that on this same side of the fifth wheel in the closet. a outlet was missing. wires capped off and down the line from there the outlet inside by the door had no power along with the one on the outside of the trailer. i figured out the putting a oulet in the closet connected and shot power down the line to those outlets that now work but cause the lights above the mirror in the bathroom to buzz on and iff when using them haha very creepy so i took mote of a look and the outlet wires connections behind the closet are wire nutted and taped. seems original. i gave a quick look to see if connections are good. but not detailed. i bettrr check them more closely. the switch in the bathroom and the outlet are in the wall and tight and just go to the main white outlet loom and looks original any ideas or questions appreciated ! i need to get this taken care of i spent awhile putting that new outlet and same thing. was a pain. very tight in the corner under the mirror.
@joesmith-fi1sx3 жыл бұрын
@@MountaineerOutdoors i havnt checked the voltage. the outlet will power a light or something small power but a shop vac it barely gets going and turns the lights on above i believe. also when the switch is turned on it powers off power to the outlet. i will pull the switch next and replace it with another and check the wiring which looked tight other then that i will get my multi meter out and check the voltage next

I tested some old night lights at my GFCI outlet in my bathroom. Two of the lights flashed on for a second and then died and now the outlet won’t work at all. I tried resetting it several times. I tried using different appliances to see if they would work from that outlet. They wouldn’t. I turned off the breaker switch. Waited, and then turned it back on. Everything else on that circuit still gets power. I checked to see if two other GFCI‘s are still working and they are. I reset them to see if that did anything. It didn’t. Did I just kill my GFCI and do I need to replace it? I put them in in 2004. Thank you.
