Since I played old-DF with a tileset rather than ascii, one thing with the Steam DF tileset has caught me out a few times... Farm Plots that have seeds in them are still shown with the same appearance as a fallow tile. Since there was no visual clue, I found myself wondering if anyone had actually planted seeds or had I run out? I do know that when you click on a Plot you get to see what is inside it so you can actually see the seeds but old-DF with tilseset had a different appearance for those squares. Was ascii-DF the same with the tileset spoiling me or do you think this is an oversight in Steam DF?

@Bronimin2 жыл бұрын
its not really a big deal, but when a grower wants to plant seeds he needs to be able to get the bag with the seeds inside. If a barrel has space for a bag of seeds then a hauler may decide to stick your growers seed bag into the barrel and reserve the bag for the hauling task. This means the grower can no longer plant anything until the hauler is done shuffling bags around.

Using this tutorial, I managed to get a farm and a stable supply of drink so yay. But my main question is, why is deep farming better than not-deep farming?
@stewartgames6697 Жыл бұрын
Besides your Dwarfs cooking all your plants (the most common way to lose all your seeds), there are a few other ways you can lose your entire food supply early on: 1. You planted too much, and don't have enough workers to harvest all the crop in time. Crops can rot if left "on the vine" for too long. Focus on food production and ignore cloth or dyes at first, and don't plant huge farms, until you have enough dedicated farmers to gather your crops quickly. A small fort can last on just a single tile of farm for some time, no need to go 5x5 or larger early in the game. 2. You planted too late, and the season changed, killing a crop that cannot grow in, say, the Winter. This one can be difficult to avoid, as it requires a lot of micromanagement to prevent (you have to watch your crops and switch to "leave fallow" after the first harvest of the season, then swap it back manually when the seasons change). Another way to deal with it is to just take the hit to production and leave the crop fields fallow on the second season of their cycle - for example, only plant Cave Wheat in Summer and leave the fields Fallow in Fall, so that you won't plant Cave Wheat too close to Winter and lose all your seed. Sadly, this was once easily avoidable because crops would get flagged red for planting if it was too close to the season change, but a bug took out that feature and it has yet to be fixed. 3. Vermin got into your seed or food stores, and caused the seeds to rot away. Cats can help a bit with this as they kill some vermin, as can putting your farms behind doors so that flies and other flying insects have a hard time getting into your food storage. Chickens are also capable of eating insects, though there is some debate over whether or not the chickens will eat crops (they have the ability to eat plants, but seem to rarely need to eat to the point that they won't ever need enough nutrition to consume an entire crop plant). Note that Pigs tend to generate lots of vermin, so should be kept far away from farms. They do this because they can "graze" on any floor, including stone, and doing so spawns Vermin. Chickens also have the ability to spawn Vermin, but since they also have the ability to eat Vermin they tend to clean up after themselves. 4. Lack of bags for seed storage. When dwarfs brew or eat a raw plant, the seed falls on the floor wherever the action happens. If a seed is not quickly stored into a bag, it rots and disappears. So there can be issues if you either do not have an empty or available bag for storing the seed, or the dwarfs who would collect those seeds are given too many jobs and unavailable to do the work of seed collecting. Basically be wary of over-extending your Haulers around harvest time, and always keep up with bag production. 5. Quarry Bushes in particular are a real pain to grow, and not really worth bothering with. I honestly think they are bugged out - I've seen both the leaves and the entire bush get harvested (as in the item "Quarry Bush" gets put into my food stockpile...), the "raw" leaves are supposed to be processed by putting them into bags with the "Process into Bags" command at the Farm workstation before being cooked but can be cooked without the bagging (probably because they have too similar a name? one is called "quarry leaves", and the other is a bag full of "quarry leaves", but the two items are supposed to be different...), and even if you somehow manage to get some rock nuts before the dwarfs cook them all the main use of them (milling them for oil) destroys the seed of the plant and leaves you without a way to plant again as is. I mean I love this game, but Quarry Bushes are the thing that got me the closest to rage quitting multiple times over the years.

If you have a water source and buckets, you can designate a hole to some (preferredly walled off!) tiles as a Pond. Your dwarves will start filling it with water. Just be sure stop them as soon as there's a "coating of mud" everywhere, about 1-3 water level. You can plant on that mud.

Dig a bigger room around the pong and when the ponds 3/7 or so stop the dumping and knock the walls down so it drains into the bigger room. 1/7 water evaporates over time. If water in the bigger room doesn't go to 1/7, dig another bigger room and then remove the wall again

@@lyagushkha8490 ideally, you would have another chamber for more farming or for evaporation adjacent to it closed off with a bridge, door, or floodgate that's wired with a lever. Then, you can turn off the pond zone, pull the lever, and drain the water into the adjacent chamber where it can evaporate. As long as you don't let your dwarves fill the chamber past about two levels of water deep, if you doubled the surface area, it will evaporate. Otherwise, you can pump it out with a screw pump. Check out Twisted Logic Gaming for some up-to-date methods for screw pumps.

Hi. My fortress is filled with corpses of domestic animals and some visitors. I created new stockpile for corpses, but dwarves don't want to move them. How I must deal with corpses and produced miasma?

They might not be allowed to haul them, also if the bodies are outside and rotten they start to be considered "refuse" not bodies.

It's good to put refuse and corpse piles outside to prevent miasma (and later, to make things safer, there's ways to make some indoor locations sufficiently "outside", but don't worry at first). One thing that's potentially surprising though is that by default there's a standing order to not haul outside refuse -- and that includes stuff that's in your outside stockpile. (This doesn't prevent things being used in crafts, but it will stop them moving from pile to pile or some other advanced techniques.) You may want to turn that off occasionally or permanently, although it does help at first to reduce unnecessary hauling work before you have infrastructure set up.
