GH5 6k Vs 4k Video. Surprise result.

In this vlog, the last of this week i take a look at the slightly hidden option for 6k video on the panasonic lumix GH5, and test it against the 4k 150mb video.
The results are interesting to say the least.

I did a short test with the 6K Photo mode. The footage was 4992 wide (4:3) @ 30fps at around 190Mbit h265. I converted it with Rocky Mountains converter to ProRes 422HQ and than looked at it in Premiere Pro 2017 and it looked stunning...way more detail than the 4K footage. The only thing is that i rented the camera so i can not do more test for now but i will rent it again soon and do more testing.

Use manual focus... AFC was so off putting on the facing screen shots I had to skip those segments in the video.

I just did a test myself and the difference is not as big as in your video. Remember 6k is not a video mode, it's photo mode so it will not apply your video settings. Maybe do a more controlled test with exact same setup, lighting and subject. Record 4k in 30p 400 ISO 1/60, then switch to M 6k photo 1/60 400 ISO. I don't have all the other fancy gear that you have so I'd be interested to see your results.

interesting finding but are you sure it is not a flaky video format conversion that removed all the fine details ? (because other samples on youtube do not match your finding)

What was the camera setup for the shot at 9:07? GH5 on a glidecam? Whatever it is, it looks very good to me. There's quite a bit of moving detail in the lower half of the frame, and the codec seems to be handling it pretty well.

What was the shutter speed in the 6K photo mode? Remember, you set that like photos. It isn't part of the video settings. i.e. if you were shooting 4k at 30fps, the shutter was probably set at 1/60 sec. However, the 6k was probably set at the last photo shutter speed you had used. if it was at even 1/120, that wild be a full stop darker. Also with the h.265 codec darker exposures will get crushed as a normal part of its compression, which may explain the kids of detail...

Actually it's a solid 30fps not 29.97 so it's off for NTSC broadcast too.

6k photo mode is recorded in h265.

When you didnt expose it right without good light source (theire isnt good lighting in 4k and of course not in the 6k version) , then you lost detail

Less resolution in 6K and H265 then convert to Pro-res - not so sure why anyone should bother using 6K - have I missed something?

well, I did my on test and it looks muuuuch way better. I mean 6k is better than 4k . I have also verified it with another nice discovery where you can shoot 6k continuously as per this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5fNYauqq8qKrck so is this a low light moving "you" in front of camera ale it looses the details or maybe something other settings made this low quality? wonder what could cause it?
