Great guide, loved the waveform and shutter angle settings. Super helpful! One thing I don't quiet understand is why would you prefer to shoot in VFR 24 1080 or 4k as your main options? I actually played around with both of those and whilst for some specific occasions 120 frames per second are super nice. But in most cases sacrificing autofocus and no sound is not worth it in my opinion. I actually use manual focus and AF/AE Lock button to quickly grab focus which works very nicely which is not an option VFR cinema mode. Also, as you said you do a lot of talking head/youtube style video - how can you do that without sound recording in VFR styles? or you use a separate audio recorder? I personally settled for C1 - 24fps 1080, C2 - 60 fps 1080, C3(1,2,3) same but 4k. And that works better for me for now. I am quite new to the camera thought and figuring out what works best is most important :D Sorry for the long message, cheers!

i really only shoot VFR for b-Roll. everything else is in 4K 24fps either in 8bit or 10bit. yeah you lose focus lock with VFR so any talking head I do, I turn the VFR off. I just did a behind the scenes for my youtube studio so you can kind of see how i set that up.

Hi! I just got my gh5 and watched a frw videos of you that are very helpful. But i have an important question to you. And thats about an noise issue!? Even at iso 100 and not only in dark ligning i have lots of noise in my image when i watch it at the pc. I filmed in 4k 10 bit 30 frames in cinelike D. At the fullhd 180 slomo its of course even worse. But i'm really confufused if this can be/ is normal from the gh5😕 I tried different coloursettings but norhing really changed. Some people say ro overexpose a litlle bit. It helped in some situations and the noise is away. But sometimes its still there🤷‍♂️?, Do you maybe have an idea what i'm doing. Or are just my expetations that bad? I mean with an gx80 i din't have problems like this 😕

I want this camera so bad just because I love photography/cinematography and the shots this produces blows my mind. However, I'm such an amateur that stuff like this scares me. I don't know anything about camera settings, lens types, etc. I don't know what ISO is or frame rate. I'm photography illiterate! This is just too much of a camera for me, I think I need to take a class and start with a beginner camera and work my way up. This is for advanced to pro's and I gotta respect that. For now me and my iPhone camera are having fun.

the gh5 is definitely a lot of camera. the thing i like about it is that you can begin on it with simple settings and then continue to learn on it as you go because it has some cinema style camera features

thanks so much for watching! I would say that a native Lumix lens would probably be best or an olympus lens. The Lumix 12-35mm would be really good for that because that would be a standard 24-70 style lens in full frame terms. the 12mm would probably be wide enough for the yoga and auto focus should work really well with the native lens.

yeah the gh5 is a really sharp image and i definitely don’t want it too sharp. i try but don’t always succeed in wanting it to look a bit more film looking. that’s why i also put a bit of a fade in the blacks in editing as well. but it really just comes down to how you want it

Hello I've got a new GH5S and many items are greyed out on my menu. PHOTO STYLE HIGHLIGHT SHADOW iDYNAMIC FLKR DECREASE PICTURE MODE IN RECORD NOISE LEVEL CUT SPECIAL MIC XLR MIC ADAPTER SETTING VLOG VIEW ASSIST SYNCRO SCAN LOOP RECORDING VARIABLE FRAME RATE I have selected every recording format available but it makes no difference. Also the ISO settings do not go above 6400. Does this sound like a warranty problem to you?

@@CalebHoover I am shooting at 4k 8bit on every position and I've just made c1 to be 60fps and c2 in 24fps, but then I've found that the actual angle in the down left corner was way too low. I just increased it to 180 and everything is fine now. I love this camera and I'm rushing non stop to learn everything about it! Thank you for this video and your response!

great question! i use 8bit for the variable frame rate so i can shoot with a variable frame rate of 60fps. i shoot 10bit with things like interviews and other clips that i know need 10bit.

It's important to note that highlights clip at different IRE levels in different picture profiles, especially in Vlog-L where highlights clip around 80 IRE. For this reason, the histogram is pretty much useless for monitoring exposure in Vlog and the waveform is crucial

No they are both great formats. The mp4 might be a bit more compressed but I've had success with both formats.

When I export in 4K and watch the video on my laptop I can see so much noise in the background but when I export the 4K video on FHD it's so crisp. Why is this happening? Regards from Stockholm, When I set the camera to Manual in Creative Movie Mode, the shutter speed jumps from 1/50 to 1/120 the moment I press the record button and reverts to 50 upon ending the recording. I went into the menu options in Creative Movie Mode and chose Exposure Mode. I tried choosing M and S. In both cases, as soon as I press record, the shutter speed disappears from the screen and reappears after ending the shoot. I am in shutter angle also. Is that normal? Any ideas?

🤔 im not totally sure on that. i've honestly never shot in creative mode only video mode. i think that M and S are primarily for photo so maybe that has something to do with it but again I'm not totally sure. I wonder if your record format is on something different. Try changing that to either MOV or MP4(LCPM) or if that’s not it maybe it’s the System Frequency. If that is set to Cinema 24Hz it limits you. I have mine on 59.94Hz(NTSC)

yeah man! i usually shoot in NTSC but system frequency 24.00HZ Cinema does have variable frame rates so you can shoot slo mo. I'm actually exploring more shooting in Cinema 24.00Hz.

Great vid Caleb. I have a question regarding the VFR. If I film in 4k 8bit 24fps and turn on vfr, can I also play it at normal speed? Because why is there a 60fps option that you don’t use then?

Great question! Thanks for watching! Yeah I think the main point of the VFR is that the camera processes the frame rate as if you were in 24fps. So let’s say I’m shooting 4K 8bit 24fps with a VFR at 60, it will process the slow motion in camera. You can shoot with the VFR on but not change it to 60 and keep it in 24fps and it will be normal 24fps with audio. You lose audio if you change the VFR to 60. The other 60fps that you find in the different shoot modes is if you just want regular 60fps and have control in editing in slowing it down. I pretty much never use that. Some people like the 60fps. Hope that helps!

Great video, I followed your settings, but how come when i pan camera when filming I get: GH5: jerky, studdering, blurry footage, booth with good light and in low light, and adjusting iso etc and different recording settings. did the ibis get turned off somehow? or maybe your shutter speed isn’t double your frame rate? that can cause some weird things. otherwise not totally sure. sometimes could do with the lens too. as far as the blurred footage, are you using autofocus cuz that just isn’t good. i’m almost always on manual focus

🤔 I don’t think MOV or MP4 would make the image grainy. What ISO do you normally shoot at? I’ve gotten grainy daytime footage when on auto ISO before while running some tests.

I was shooting at 100 ISO in the daytime footage outdoors. I shoot all video stuff manually. I shot some footage in MOV mode and the image quality to my eye look a lot better. So not too sure, but switching to MOV like you has helped my footage. So thank you again for the video :D

I personally don't use histogram for video, it's useless. Waveform or false colors on external monitor are much more precise tools. And I don't use shutter angle. Usually I can easily double my frame rate to calculate the shutter speed in calm situations, but then you need quickly set the shutter speed to 1/50 to avoid flickering or to add more light in low light situations the angle setting could be a headache.

yeah the angle can be limiting sometimes! i pretty much always keep mine at an angle just because i don’t want to have to shuffle through shutter especially if i’m changing frame rates quickly on shoots. but i can see where not having it on angle could be helpful in low light. i agree with having the external monitor is so great with false color. thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
