GH5 vs Original BMPCC | Blind Test

I just wanted to point out that "Camera B" was slightly out of focus in the first shot. The focus is on the far eye instead of the close eye (can also be seen on the fact that the far side of the collar is sharper than the near side). My apologies for this. Why are shots out of focus? The GH5 is the camera that has destroyed my life. I can’t believe you are seriously promoting this piece of shit. I’ve been your biggest fan and loyal supporter for almost 3 years but you never respond to the comment or questions I ask. The Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera original has been the best but I fear the look is similar and old. The setting you used are limited because you are beautiful eyes and I can’t stop looking at them. All camera will make you look beautiful eyes so next time please use another person who is not photogenic or beautiful eyes then we will all see the true comparison. Many camera capture birds, animals, trees, sky, ocean, and everything else perfectly HOWEVER a true cinematic camera is tested by how it captures the human. The iPhone take beautiful pictures of ocean and moon but it make the human look lifeless and dull. Is the iPhone also your Facebook profile account picture? If you compare the Black Magic Pocket Camera it will win against IPhone. I am also jealous of your girlfriend.

The shot was out of focus by mistake, can be a bit hard to nail focus sometimes when you are infront of the camera aswell :/ I totally agree that the way a camera captures a human is by far the most important, because it's most often through people we tell our stories.

B = Blackmagic and I prefer B of course (notice the difference when shooting the guy's shirt, camera A is obviously looking too digital at 1:40)

A is blackmagic for me. The grain, the moire gave it away. Even though some of the leaves shots made me doubt a bit. I still use my BMPCC and it upscales so well in 4K in Davinci Resolve. With realtime upscale AI around the corner I'm not even sure I'll need more until it dies...

A is BMPCC . The look and the presence of green is something that is known in BM cameras.

A is BMPCC. Bokeh is smaller because of the smaller sensor.

The strange about that topic is that the GH5 has a lot bigger sensor and people didn't care about the shallower DOF this time, thats crazy! I think because of the hype arround black magic' s design (i mean the look of the camera itself). I am a GH5 user, i really like the BMPCC but i don't see any diference except RAW. The DNG from the pocket is totally phenomenal but the BMPCC need a lot of gear to be functional. In the other hand the GH5 has it all, really underated when it comes against to BM comparison. Both cameras are good! Nice review!

That's something that I thought some people would be hung up on, and simply just stare at the depth of field to try and determine which is which. But so far, basically nobody has commented based on that. For sure two different types of cameras.

@@carlscinema7086 BMPCC skintones are better than GH5. I never saw on a video digital file such Brown and natural colours, only in BM ,great colours. I am really impressed about that. The DOF doesn't matter anyway, because the pocket has a lot different sensor size and "sensor type", so there is not a lot difference in DOF!

I have the BMPCC og and I really like it. But they both looked pretty good in this limited setting. I'm not sure I could tell which was which. I did notice some difference in the blacks in a few shots. For the purpose of telling a story, I think they would both be good enough. I actually expected a bigger difference.

For sure, when used for the purpose of telling a story, with some knowledge behind the camera and in the grade, most people wouldn't notice or care about the difference.

B is the Bmpcc raw. More detailed, not as sharp as A. Loved them both. Prefer the functionality of the Gh5 but the color science of the bmpcc

They are both amazing cameras. I believe a is blackmagic because of the moire in the shirt and the greens in the shadows even though the leave shot did not make it easy. B is gh5 just because, pretty close though. I like the sharpness at -5.

I prefer the dynamic range and contrast of A. I usually liked A's color but for at times, I preferred the saturation in the bottle and the way green was rendered in the leaf shot from B. Less yellow-tinted.

My 2 cents.. The GH5 is probably better for run & gun film look video. But It's only 10bit Pro Res. BMP4k is 12 bit BRaw, with added power and flexbility in Davinci resolve, which is designed to take avantage of Braw in post produciton. Also the physical design is focused on the filmmakaer only.. not the photographer. With the new color science Gen 5 and color transform tool, you can achieve a look that rivals Red and Arri cinematography within certian parameters. Thanks! :) I actually sold my GH5 recently and got the BMPCC4K instead. But as Charles said, the GH5 is a better camera for run & gun so it kinda depends on your style. But for me, wanting to focus more on cinematography instead of videography the BMPCC4K was more appealing. But keep in mind that the bmpcc4k needs more accessories and rigging than the GH5.

*A* seems to be the BMPCC - tad bit better looking but I was surprised how well the GH5 held up against it, still I honestly don't understand why I want to swap my GH5 for a P4K. 🤦🏼‍♂️ *struggles* Thank you for the throughout test!

I am not aware of how shooting with the GH5 goes but I can say that the BMPCC OG doesn't go well with vintage lenses it doesn't need the organic look of them looking already organic and filmic it shines with Sigma Art and Canon L. So next time let old BMPCC choose the weapon.

When it comes to the GH5 vintage lenses really takes the edge of that digital look. But I'll try to include some shots with the Sigma Art 18-35mm in the future when it comes to the BMPCC.

A is definitely GH5... the highlight rolloff in the beer and the green tint in the shadows of the light meter make me think that.

I don't have the GH 5, but I think it's an A camera. The B camera seems a little red to me. That's what my BMPCC does sometimes. But maybe I'm wrong ....

A is BMPCC. Easy, just check the perspective. I guess you’re using the same lens and the crop factor is bigger on the BM.

As said in the beginning of the video, the bmpcc used a 24mm lens and the gh5 a 35mm lens to compensate for the difference in sensor size. Except for the shot of the beer, can't remember what i did for those.

To be honest I don't think the results would be that much different. Shooting Prores HQ or Raw looks very similar, its more a matter of having more control in post with the raw file.

The moire in the shirt on the rooftop scene shows that this was sampled at an enormous resolution, thus A would be the GH5. Meaningless test to make two cameras look the exact same because like what's the question here? Which camera does a better job at pulling off a look that is achievable by the other? Also the process must be to grade one nicely and then match the other, so the latter camera is always going to be at a distinct disadvantage. EDIT: Actually I was completely wrong on the moire point and the opposite is true. Still, it sits as a giveaway for anyone who ACTUALLY knows how moire works (unlike me lmao)
