We, as Muslims in general and Pakistanis in particular, should realize that we have a great contemporary scholar amongst us who is trying his best to enlighten us with an unadulterated version of Islam. All it takes before listening to him is to put our preconceived notions, misinformation, and prejudices on the side. It takes an open mind with an honest intention to learn from his teaching. And if at some point you don't agree with what he says, then one should do research to counter question him. All in all, it takes some level of seriousness and an open mind to learn from Ghamdi Sahib. I personally thank Ghamdi Sahib for teaching me unbiased and purified version of Islam as it was meant to be from the time of its revelation over 1,400 years ago.

According to Ghamdi sb, there are two independent sources of islam : 1- Quran ( in the form of text) 2- Sunnat ( in the form of practice) Further, he said that "hadees o rawayaat" is not an independent source of islam. He makes , and various scholars from past, also make clear distinction between Sunnat and Hadees.

@@HamzaKhan_HK that is where you have gotten it wrong. The timings and methods of salah (like other sunnah) has been mass transmitted from one generation to another generation. Now you may ask why is there difference of opinion in these matters if it was mass transmitted. So, the answer of this is actually not easy to be explained in just a comment. Ghamidi sahab himself has addressed these questions on multiple occasions. You can easily find his responses on KZbin or in his writings. You are free to disagree with his opinions but it would be very good if you first atleast try to understand what he says as how he says.

Acknowledgment of a great scholar of our time The Ghamdi Sahib by another highly knowledgeable scholar like Taimur gives a boost to both in scholarly circles and bring teachings of Ghamdi to mainstreams. I think it is high time that we understand the Islam as Allah and Holy Prophet intended and not through the eyes of historians and scholars of early era of Islam for their era. Humanity has progressed massively in last two centuries. Muslims needs to revisit lot of new era phenomenon in every walk of life if they ever have a chance to stay in any meaningful competition in the world society. Without this intellectual evolution we risk getting extinct. We need people like you to show us light and enlighten us.

The West suffered through the same dilemma of Religion controlling the State three decades ago. Thanks to the scholars of the 14th century, they broke away the State from the chains of religion and got set on the road to progress. However, we are still struggling with this dilemma, and it requires a significant effort not only on the part of present-day Islamic reformers like Ghamdi Sahib but also the general public to change their mindset by rejecting centuries-old myths.

It's a real treat. You've beautifully summed up the gems uttered by Javed Ahmed Ghamdi. Only a nation saturated by ignorance and bigotry can force an intellectual like Ghamdi to take his abode to another country. Most civilised countries would give an arm and leg to have someone of Ghamdi's calibre amongst them.
@malik_e
@malik_e 22 күн бұрын
An excellent salvo! Pithy encapsulation of a deep intellectual tradition, important as it is, however comes at the expense of nuance. It is nonetheless a great pointer to those who would choose to study the Farahi thought and Janab Ghamidi’s sterling contribution to the development of that thought. Indoctrinated with what you describe as dogma and habituated to terms that ease reception of apparently new ideas, it is easy to describe Ghamidi sahab’s thought as radical. It isn’t. And this is the most outstanding feature of his scholarship. While standing firmly within the parameters of scripture, he has forensically exposed the errors, fallacies and fancies that have grown over the centuries around the core normative values of religion. Feeding such invented fan fiction at the threat of eternal damnation has ensured perpetuation of clerical authority so much so that it is well nigh impossible for most to shed their respective confirmation biases. The parallels you have cited were the forerunners to the Reformation - there were quite a few others as well. The key difference is that these were attempted push backs to the growing oppressiveness - of thought and action - of the Catholic Church. Emphasis on ‘sola scriptura’ might give that impression of a parallel. However, in the Farahi school it is how that scripture unfolds over time and space to irrigate the landscape and the depths of human imagination and conduct. When that begins to happen, the vanity and pettiness of our conflicts, angers, accusations, frustrations, persecutions, agitations and false egos recedes into oblivion.

This for second time I listen to you. First time I heard you lecturing on the history of philosophy. Interestingly, I am a student of Philosophy so I enjoyedyour those lectures. And even more intrestingly, I have been a student of Ghamdi Sab, in Civil Service Academy, Walton Lahore so I enjoyed your this lecture too. Where I admire Ghamdi Sab there I do not go along with him on many issues. The recent one, when a pig heart was transplaned in a human, the first response of Ghamdi sab was that it was haram/ not allowed in Islam. I immediately commented that to save human life everything is allowed. Am glad after few days he reviewed his position. On the five topics you mentioned there is lot of room to differ with him. A faith is not suspended in the air, it reflects in people, who follow it. Hence the religion too is known through it followers. For instance India is a Hindu country and Pakistan a Muslim. A mere land without people is no country. Antarctica though a land but no country. If in future a majority Christians settle there it will be a christian country and both pork and wime will be legal served there. Allah has given laws parallal to human made laws. If a country is implementing those laws in their system that will be an Islamic country. No other religion has that comprehensive laws and that is why the Islamic state is debatable. Ghamdi Sab is trying to improve the packing of Islam to making it more acceptable, hence he is giving different explanations. In some cases he sounds correct but not all the time. Islam is giving a comprehensive way of life and any state following those laws will be an Islamic State. So how he can say a state has no religion. Any state implments human made laws will be a secular state.

Please note the significant religious discord regarding Sufism, which is seen by Ghamidi sb as a parallel religion to Islam. This has fueled the animosity of Barelvi and Deoband scholars towards Ghamdi Sahab. Both of these schools of thought have foundations in Sufism, tracing their lineage to Shah Waliullah and further back through centuries of Sufi tradition. As a result, followers of Sufism find it very painful when their beliefs are criticized.

Good presentation. Valuable insights from the history. I have a different perspective. History should be used to learn and break the shackles of history. We, however, use history to justify the present. What I call Prisoners of History. Ghamidi sahib generally has the right approach. I read and listen to him regularly. However, I do have few difficulties in understanding his thoughts on how to achieve the goals of what he profess to be the true essence of Islam. Purpose of Islam is to achieve salvation in Hereafter, according to JAG. But the road goes through this life. The real issue is how to lead a life of purity, or tazkiya, without focusing on the community at large. Individually I might be doing everything right, but the society, which constitutes a country or state, has be governed by similar values and principles, or there will be huge conflict, like the one we see today. How to bridge this gap is the missing part.

I watched this video from a critical mindset because the words like "Modernism" etc have caused more damage to Ghamidi sahab's teaching, who himself has never claimed to be a modernist or as someone presenting modern interpretation of Islam. However, I found the video to be very good. Taimur sahab has very nicely summarized the points where Ghamidi sahab's opnion differ with our traditional scholars. And moreover, I felt the word "modernity" was used basically to draw parallel with past history. It was not used to imply that Ghamidi sahab is a "modernist". A word that our orthodoxy uses for him unfortunately in a negative sense. Job well done Taimur sahab 😊

Thank you for this, Dr Taimur! Here're my two cents: Islam has a rich history of holding a diversity of opinions, interpretations and arguements that can simultaneously be in service of truth and social good. One doesn't have to like or dislike Ghamidi Sb to accept that his explanations and interpretations have as much right to exist as others. And so the way to engage with Ghamidi Sb's work will not be through ridicule, or demeaning him, but with reflection, reasoning and thought. To operate from a place of intellectual courage, humility, clarity and openness and not let our personal prejudices about a certain person or their 'sect/background' ever discount the merit of their arguments :)
