I have been studying the rise and fall of Muslim empire for a long time. There are are multiple reasons. Most the harm is self inflicted due to a pst sense of superiority and self righteousness, refusing to embrace new ideas and technologies. There was a dependence on faith and brute force. Europeans evolved and developed newer technologies and drove the Muslims into where they are today.

How can you separate the two. Without Islam, they're not Muslim, and there's no difference between them and pagan Arabs, whom Muhammad fought were his blood relatives. @braveheart8318 If you consider Islaam as an identity, then how do you explain the partition of Pakistan and Bangladesh, the conflict between Saudi and Turks/ Iran? In fact, don't go too far. Try to explain the current difference between Punjab and the rest of Pakistan ( without going into party politics). Prophet Mohammed PBUH was forced out of his hometown Makkah by the blood relatives that he later fought against. The context is completely different in the case of pre partition India, where everyone, regardless of religion, lived peacefully (mostly).

Pagan Arabs were ok with a different religion, just like Hindu of India and Christian of Europe and America are ok with ritualistic Islam. Only secular so-called Muslims living in Pakistan have this romantic notion of pre partition because of their hatred of religion. I never heard it from Muslims living in India who are minority 3rd class citizens. As far as conflicts among existing Muslim majority nation states are concerned, they're the results of European colonisation, they way Islamic empires were divided and neo colonialism. All of them are secular, including Saudi, iran and Pakistan. They pick and choose few laws to throw dust in the eyes of Muslim majority and pretend to be "Islamic". None of these governments represent Muslim majority and are stooges of their masters and dance to every tune, they make. Islam isn't against ethnic identity but it can't be used to create divisions.

Thank you Taimur Sahib, as always an excellent presentation. It’s said ‘time waits for no one’. Each day brings about a new technology or an idea impacting the way we live. Just to keep pace with the world requires acquisition of new knowledge on a constant basis. The education system in advanced countries regularly requires interrogating old norms and ideas, questioning, changing and adopting them to meet new challenges. It seems to me that this spirit of enquiry is missing or diminished in societies sliding back. The certainties of the past give comfort to them in an uncertain world and seem attractive to hang on to. But they offer no groundwork for meeting unforeseen challenges. Instead of looking inwards they find it easier to blame others for their misfortunes. It’s probably more fruitful to put aside the dogmas of the old and develop a pragmatic approach. Learn from the experience of the West. How did the West propel itself from the dark ages and dominated all aspects of human endeavour from science, technology to arts over the course of nearly five hundred years. Why is the far east now, including China, Japan and South Korea moving forward at breakneck speed leaving Middle East behind. This is despite the natural wealth bestowed to them in the form of oil and It still takes western experts to run their enterprises. Their conflict between ideas invariably boils into an open war with much bloodshed. In the battle of ideas comprise and pragmatism is the key and not the total annihilation of the other. Perhaps this will be a long way coming but it’s where the salvation lies.

No civilization can defeated and die unless it has its own internal weaknesses. No doubt today it seems that Muslims and their civilisation is far behind Western civilization but it is not the real case. The forecasts show that by the end of 21st century Islam will be the dominating religion and it is todays fastest growing religion of the world. When I compare the acceptance of Hijab among women and trend of namaz and fasting I see that todays young generation of Muslims is more religious and adopting religious practices and trying to understand Islam compared to 50 or sixty years back. In those days Islam was a tradition which majority follow without knowlegde and understanding but todays young man want to understand the real concept behaind " La ilaha illallah ". No doubt under the influence of Western culture many of young people are becomming Athiest but their numbers of far low compared to those who are accepting Islam after getting the the indepth knowledge of the their religion.

I don't think the speaker is right about Persia(Iran). Ahmad Shah Qajar succeeded to the throne at the age of 11 years and when he went into exile-deposed by Reza Shah, his age was 25 years. It wasn't Qajar that obstructed the process of reform in Persia (at that time Iran was called Persia), it were the mechanations of the British Empire, which fearful of the threat to its colony in India (the so-called British Raj) supported Reza Sha into deposing Ahmad Shah Qajar (and starting Pahlavi Dynasty). The aim was a government in Iran that would be under the control of the British.

Once religious ideologies of christianity got trumped then unstoppable ruling of science and technology started. If Britain has rightfully (I mean mightfully, not lawfully) retained her Kingship/Emperorship in the Empress then what about India? Pakistan (more in hurry in everything bad than India in hurry) got its Viceroy in MA Jinnah. What about truncated India? What if Mughal dynasty got power back? As a matter of our respect to our last emperor, if not natursl heirs to the throne (though symbolic). I am a Marxist --keep this fact or fiction aside, but I need my emperor back! If you give me a state/nation-state to me that rides over my shoulders day-night then why not you better give me my emperor of pre-British era? What if he was Mughal/Muslim/Islamic? He did merge and fuse his culture with my pre-Mughal culture so that we became one/united/unity by relatedness and intimacy. Where's that? I want the samething back! Who writes on these original issues? Rather you gave me a "state" that has 100 nukes and another state (truncated India) that has 60 nukes! I didn't want this! By chance, the British before leaving (with ceremonial respects) did remind us about our common identity: The IVC i.e. Indus Valley Civilization whose two prominent sites of Harappa and Mohenjodaro try to speak to us! Muslims countries suffers from Authoritarianism, Fundamentalism, and Jingoism. There are numerous clear data on why Islamic civilization is failing all over the world. Learning from the past you can clearly see that the division of power between civilians rule and militaristic rule is very blur among the Muslims nations. Example is Pakistan, Egypt, Syria and others All these are ruled by military behind and on front. The Ottomans empire also failed because it had a vast arm forces that was not capable of modernizing. As long as the Muslims were engaging in education and acquiring knowledge, Muslims were powerful. Religion fundamentalism and the teaching of Al Ghazali also destroyed the fabric of Islamic society.

It’s a dynamic religion in the sense that people of any era can adopt its principles n guidelines n they need to integrate their local culture in Islam, regional social practices will either stay or abolish according to Islamic guidelines. Islam does not allow persons conscience or wisdom to make logic and draw conclusions. Islam does not think that people are capable of doing so. This is major problem. there is no permanent truth, morals, rules. they are always relative to somethings dependent on space and time. Which emphasize need of flexibility in thinking which islam does not allow. It is very rigid which means it will break. Indian civilization is oldest known civilization still exists with force. Main reason behind it is flexibility it offer its reliance on personal conscience. Islam is newest of all it has not been tested on scale of time yet. People that boasts about its followers quantity seem really foolish only. How many religion attended glory of their time now has become archiological sites only. Let islam survive next 500 years then can only conclusion will be drawn.
