Ghana’s parliament is debating whether it should pass one of the most repressive anti-LGBTQ+ laws in the world.
Homosexuality is already illegal in Ghana but this new legislation would widen the scope of what can be deemed illegal - including clauses in the bill that could be used to target journalists for anything deemed to be advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community comes with a 10 year prison sentence.
Despite that, many in the Ghanaian media support the bill and their coverage of the story reflects that.
Lurking in the shadows of this debate is an American element - the ultra-conservative US evangelical lobby - which has been injecting itself into the domestic affairs of more and more African countries - in the name of so-called Christian values.
The Listening Post’s Nic Muirhead on Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ legislation - and the problematic news coverage that might help turn it into the law of the land.

It is just simple: They want moreattention and more revenue from the target audience. They have local leaders for each branch of the agency to direct local content for what would work best in the local country/region. If Al Jazeera reports on something like why LGBT is banned in Qatar to the Western audience they are going to lose their market and their patronization. Essentially, what Al Jazeera is saying is that you can believe what you believe and promote it to your local audience and they will be fine with it (so long as it is not to their own local audience in Qatar). They will never share this story in Qatar: It is a marketing strategy. They are for the money, and not care so much about what you want to do with your own people.

@@gordonmcmullan1087The assertion that adherence to tradition and values precludes fear of the LGBTQ+ community neglects the insidious undercurrents of discrimination entrenched within societal norms. The specter of colonialism and the Atlantic slave trade cast a long shadow over Africa, fostering a climate where bigotry and prejudice found fertile ground. Rooted in the dehumanization of black people, these oppressive systems birthed a narrative of superiority and inferiority, further compounded by religious dogma. However, to conflate tradition with ethical righteousness is to overlook the evolution of societal mores and the imperative of progress. Destigmatizing gay rights isn't a rejection of tradition but a recognition of the intrinsic worth of every individual, irrespective of sexual orientation. It's a departure from the shackles of theocratic superstition and bigotry towards a more enlightened discourse, where logic and compassion supplant fear and hatred. Embracing diversity isn't a betrayal of values but a testament to the resilience of humanity in the face of oppression. It's a clarion call to dismantle the entrenched systems of orthodoxy and fanaticism, paving the way for a society where every individual is afforded dignity and respect.

As usual, foreign media significantly exaggerates the situation. This isn't a problem and you'd rarely hear of anyone being attacked in Ghana because of their sexual orientation. Ghanaians don't care about what you do in your bedroom as long as you keep it in your bedroom and don't feel the need to advertise what you do publicly and try to force people to accept it. Ghanaians are 100% firm in their decision and there's absolutely nothing changing their minds.

lets see about that! one thing I learned about Ghanaians is that they are easily swayed by money and I'm certain it's the money conservative churches are pouring into that country which is bringing these politicians into the lets hate gays arena. i don't see how the western media can exaggerate the situation when the presence of such a bill is being debated in parliament, and if the decisions that Ghanaians are firm about is to get this barbaric egregious bill passed, then where is the exaggeration? ghana was being lauded as a place of justice, peace and as a nation that cared about human rights, but the passing of this bill will definitely let the world know otherwise. i hope with that comes the back lash of the pulling out of funds, aid, and investments in an already economically vulnerable country.

What is clear is that every country and society within same has the agency to determine its own societal norms. If the Saudis, Russians North Koreans Bangladeshis determine their laws, so do Afrikan countries. If you have a problem with that you can go there and argue with their governments and people's to accept what they have repeatedly rejected. But what is more likely is that you will stay quiet and stay where you are where you can practice your behavior early to your hearts content. If you cannot present to the Saudis or Indonesians then no need for you to believe that Than a or any Afrikan countries have less agency

While the legal framework of a country is crucial, it doesn't always equate to moral righteousness or justice, especially considering the historical context of Africa. The legacy of the Atlantic slave trade and colonialism, which imposed foreign values and norms, including homophobic attitudes, still lingers. The discrimination faced by black people, rooted in racism and the dehumanization of Africans, intersects with LGBTQ+ issues, as both stem from oppressive systems. Normalizing gay rights isn't about disregarding laws but recognizing the need for progress and human rights. The promotion of tolerance and acceptance counters the harmful effects of religious dogma and cultural taboos that perpetuate discrimination. Ethical discussions should prioritize logic and compassion over fear and hatred. By destigmatizing LGBTQ+ rights, Africa can move towards a more inclusive society, free from the shackles of outdated prejudices and totalitarianism, where all individuals are respected regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Well, Ghana is different than the rest of the world. Especially the US. We can't expect everyone to conform to gender ideology. So, let the country decide what it wants to do. I would also like to add that here in the US, that some ideologies are being imposed, instead of being accepted. There's a difference between affirmation and conformity. There's giving respect as a human being, and there's the force of conformity to a world view that is opposite of an individual's principles.

Do not really care if Gay and lesbian men and women were being discriminated against in this country America or in any black countries on a continent of Africa.
