Not really. A caliphate just means it’s ruled by a caliph. A sort of king religious figure. Caliphates could be small or large. Just like empires. For instance Germany today was once called the German Empire even though it had always been known as Germany and was made up of several kings in that one empire. Same can be said for America. It could be considered an Empire just bc of all the separate states make it up.

It depends how you wish to look at it, the Turks achieved hegemony relatively quickly over Anatolia and much of the Middle East, and from the time of the Arab caliphate they’re wasn’t really another major power in the region until the mamlukes, who were relatively quickly dispatched by the Turkish hegemony. The Turks just didn’t really have a major rival in the area, whereas Europe for instance is tightly packed with many different peoples and rivalry’s, and has been since the first kingdoms there. Which drove constant technological advancements and the looking of new ways to do things, including new resources found overseas through colonies or trade, the latter of which eventually meant getting around Turkish taxes en route to China and India. The Turks had an amazing position that they managed to keep pacified for most of their rule, no major rival in the region, this gave them an amazing advantage, but also lead to their eventual stagnation, as they became trapped by their own position once everyone learned how to bypass them on the way to China and India, while they also remained out of reach of the new world. It’s really an incredible story about how they benefited from their situation but were also ultimately undone by it too, as a result its kind of hard to say who “ruled” the Middle Ages, you could just as easily say the same thing about the Chinese. The Turks and Chinese were similar in the fact they lacked region rivals, whereas Europe is essentially the opposite, a bunch of rivals keeping each other in check making sure none get too strong and can overpower the rest. Also if you had to pick a place to start your civilisation, you can’t do much better than Anatolia, Persia, northern/middle China and of course the US, hence why all those states became world superpowers at one point or another 🤔

@@1212-m6b The Ghaznavid became an empire and one of the mightiest empire in the world because of Mahmud of Ghazni . People always talk about Sabuktigin what they not tell is that Sabuktigin not want to rebel against the Persian Samanid . It was Mahmud who wanted to rebel against the Samanid . Sabuktin at his greatest controlled a minuscule patch of land , the Ghanavid territory under Sabuktigin was a jok it wasn't eve. independent lol . It was Mahmud who made the Ghaznavid an empire but also one of the most mighty . Mahmud is half-Persian by his mother side . He went to school with Persian and even his friend were Persian . One of his Persian school mate became a Vizier of the Ghaznavid empire . Mahmud was nicknamed "Mahmud of Zabulistan" because his Persian mother was from Zabulistan . Everyone agree that Sabuktigin was EXTREMELY weak compared to Mahmud . Everything great about the Ghaznavid was by Mahmud the half-Persian . Mahmud was more Persian than even the 100% Iranic Samanid . Under Mahmud's Ghaznavid empire the Persian culture was in a golden age . The Shanameh was completed . And Ferdowsi only say that Mahmud was Turk because Ferdowsi not like Mahmud because Mahmud not pay Ferdowsi in gold as promised . Because someone who not like Ferdowsi took the gold and instead put silver thus making Ferdowsi think Mahmud not want to pay him . Mahmud thinking Ferdowsi insults him by not taking the gold then order Ferdowsi to be executed . Ferdowsi run away and started saying that Mahmud was a Turk . When Mahmud know that someone changed the gold coin and put silver instead he knew he made a mistake and so he regretted and send gold to Ferdowsi but unfortunately Ferdowsi die before the gold and the apology of Mahmud arrive . Mahmud as a person was a Persian . His DNA is 50% Persian . Under him no Persian believe that they were rulled by a Turk . The Ghaznavid empire wasn't Turkish empire that subjugated Persian . It was a Persian / Iranian empire rulled by Mahmud a half Persian . Also even his father Sabuktigin claimed descend from the Sassanian Shah " " " "Sabuktigin, the son of Jukan, the son of Kuzil-Hukum, the son of Kuzil-Arslan, the son of Firuz, the son of Yezdijird, king of Persia." 🤣😂 Sabuktigin not care about Turk lol , he wanted to be Persian 🤣😂 . His son was Half-Persian . I don't know why Turks are proud of him or his son ? lol . Sabuktigin was a Turk who was loyal to the Iranian Samanid . Sabuktigin was extremely Persianized and even try to claim he was from the line of the Sassanian king . Sabuktigin not care about Turk lol he not even want to rebel against the Samanid . Sabuktigin didn't rule over an empire he was a governor of a small territory that was a vassal of the Samanid . The Ghanavid empire begun with Mahmud of Ghazni the half-Persian ( who is the son of a Persian woman who was a daughter of an Iranian aristocrat from Zabulistan ) not Sabuktigin . Sabuktigin work for the Samanid as was his master Alp-Tegin . Both Alp-Tegin and Sabuktigin were EXTREMELY loyal to the Persian Samanid . Both Alp-Tegin and Sabuktigin were EXTREMELY Persianisized and Iranisized . Why Turks proud of Alp-Tegin and Sabuktigin ? Sabuktigin always claim he was from Sassanian line because he proud of being an Iranian . Alp-Tegin loyaly work for the Samanid Persian . Funny both 100% Turk blood Alp-Tegin and Sabuktigin were 100% loyal to the Persian Samanid . It was Mahmud the half-Persian who create and build the greatest empire in the Islamic world not the Turks Sabuktigin or Alp-Tegin . Both Turks Alp Tegin and Sabuktigin were canine to the Persian Samanid . The half-Persian Mahmud of Ghazni deserve 100% of the praise , he was true Persian king who made Persian culture reach a golden age .

I think it's a little misleading to say that slaves were the lowest in medieval society, especially Islamic Central Asia and South West Asia. You do bring it up later, but the military slaves like Ghulams and Mamelukes were above common freemen and would be for centuries to come. A similar system was in the Ottoman Empire with the Janissaries, and while legally they were slaves of the Sultan, they were most certainly above almost everyone else in the empire. Similarly in Rome, the Emperors personal slaves were often elevated, even at times talking down to prominent Senators. Of course, most slaves were not like that, but it's not inherent that slaves were at the bottom of society.
@iapetusmccool4 жыл бұрын
Although even then, I think the reason slaves were given such important jobs was because they had no power or influence except from what was given to them by their masters, so they couldn't easily start a rebellion, and could be killed without consequence if they started causing trouble.

@chachi mogo The problem is rooted from the modern conception of nationhood, people think ethnicities, cultures had clear borders in the past like today, which is wrong, middle east was a big cauldron, everything was put into it and mixed together. Ghaznavids were Ghaznavids, they weren't Turkic, Persian or Afghan. A Turkic elite who adopted Persian as lingua franca ruled over a largely Afghan population, saying it was a Turkic state isn't entirely wrong, but it oversimplifies it.

Well, they’re quick to forget whatever history doesn’t suit their narrative. As an indigenous of the continent, I know firsthand how they like to forget they tried to wipe out people out. Also this sort of history is really specific to this region, and frankly most people don’t care to learn anything outside of their own “country”. I do it because learning about history is awesome, and also you tend to notice how things move in circles, compared to the past. Events tend to correlate, though not exactly replicate past events, like how 100 years ago from now was also a time of pandemic and recession... And also more relevant to this video, 102 years ago, the Ottoman Empire would be defeated in 1918, and disbanded by 1921.

It is interesting how different the institution of slavery in the caliphate from that in Europe or later the new world. Slaves in the caliphate were often highly educated, well trained, and held high positions of power second only to the caliph or even becoming rulers themselves such as those of the mamluk empire. This is vastly different from the poorly educated slave Labour institutions that we know about in the US for example where even educated slave were not allowed to read or write, and were forcibly stripped from their identities and home languages. It took the west over 1200 years to elect its first person of colour as president in the US. It seems that the Muslim world was way ahead of its time in the 800s. Ps: Not justifying slavery, it is just an observation.

Because the Ghaznavid's judicial and legislative courts were all in Persian (Dari), they followed Afghan customs, norms, and traditions. They were Hanafi Sunnis just like guess who else, the Afghans. And unlike you, I have sources to back my claims. “Although the dynasty was of Central Asian Turkic origin, it was thoroughly Persianized in terms of language, culture, literature, and habits[e][55][f][56] and has been regarded as a "Persian dynasty".” Wikipedia, Ziad 2006 p.294 and Meisami 1999 p.143. Regarding their tactics, you claimed something beyond stupid “They used Turkic tactics”, what are Turkic tactics supposed to refer to, did Turks use some unknown tactics which no one else had devised? Furthermore, it would be best if you were humiliated and ashamed because not only did they not use you’re ambiguous Turkic tactics but instead used Arab traditions. “Like the other dynasties that rose out of the remains of the Abbasid Caliphate, the Ghaznavid administrative traditions and military practice came from the Abbasids. The Arabian horses, at least in the earliest campaign, were still substantial in Ghaznavid military incursions, especially in dashing raids deep into hostile territory. A record of '6000 Arab horses' being sent against King Anandapala in 1008, and evidence of this Arabian cavalry persists until 1118 under the Ghaznavid governor in Lahore.[51]” As for addressing you’re beloved Turk blood and genealogy, the pussy Turks (Ottomans) that got pounded by Afghans and the whole of the Balkans, unfortunately for you, have very small levels of Turkic blood and in some cases it’s non-existent. They are Islamized Anatolian Greeks, and their physical appearance further reinforces this undeniable fact. Turkic people have a more Asian look, but I don’t see that in any Turk, in fact, if you had researched, the country with the purest Turks like the original forefathers is Afghanistan, where because mountains have been secluded from the rest of the world and have maintained their blood unmixed. Other than the Ghaznavids , we have Mamluk ( Slave ) dynasty of Egypt ruling it for nearly three centuries . We have Mamluk dynasty in India , established and ruled by the former slaves of the Ghorid king Muizuddin . Malik Amber etc ... You won't find this change of fortunes from zero to hero in other cultures . The slavery which was practiced by muslims was radically different from western notion of slavery . Islam gave slaves their proper rights and commanded it's adherents to treat them well .

True; lots of people don't know that slavery in the Islamic law is different from the one known in other civilizations. Different that it was normal to find a scholar or doctor or even a merchant who is / was a slave. We even had a whole country governed by slaves (mamalik) and it was normal. Plus, mistreating a slave could make him free in some cases. As always, you did an extraordinary work in this episode. You have my respect.

Ghaznavids are of Turkish origin. Before the Ghaznavid State, there were Turkish communities in Afghanistan, and the Ghaznavid State was founded largely on the basis of these communities. Sebük Tigin, the founder of the Ghaznavid State, became a Muslim when he came to the Samanid homeland as a slave (Gulam). At that time, the identity of a state was named according to its rulers. According to Sebük Tigin's Pend-Nâme (advice book), he is from the tribe of "Barsahlılar" in Turkestan. Sebük Tigin was bought by the Samanid Emir Alp Tegin as a "Turkish Slave". Abu'l Gazi Bahadır Han states that Sebük Tigin, the father of Sultan Gazneli Mahmud, was from the Kayı clan.
