A lot of Japanese food in Singapore comes breaded and deep fried, no idea why But even if it isnt authentic, it usually tastes great. To the local palattes at least.

Singapore has only 1 season.... So, the colour is standardise to reflect summer only. The cooks are being honest in expression. Dry and crispy.

Yes singaporeans don't like their food to be too salty. That's why they don't put much shoyu in their food. There was once I ordered a shoyu ramen at a ramen stall in japan. It was so salty that I had to stop eating. Generally I find tonkotsu soup base is more popular than shoyu in sg.

I need to highlight this. Most Singaporeans love fried food. That's probably why the meats in your teriyaki chicken and oyakudon were fried. Quite frankly, lots of Singaporean just don't cook that much or often so when we eat out in coffeeshops and food courts, we don't care much about presentation and authenticity. What we actually look forward to is the affordability. That's why we tend not to mind about the compromising taste. For the record, we love soy sauce but I dare say that if it's an authentic Japanese shoyu, it's expensive to be used for food court businesses. Yes, don't eat pseudo Japanese food if you're going for presentation and taste.
@unkniwdead3516
@unkniwdead3516 3 жыл бұрын
Most Singaporeans would rather choose taste over presentation. On top of that, the price must be affordable. In recent years, we are seeing many Japanese foods outlets appearing in SG food courts, cafe, restaurants, hotels etc only cater to the locals but also to other foreigners in SG.

As someone who has travelled cheap in Japan before. I can say that the taste of the food in Japan can be comparable to our food court Japanese food if the price point is about the same. So if I wander out to some cheap food place outside some "ulu" Japanese train stations and you can see the local Japanese workers going there for quick bites. Yes, the food at those places will be cheap like 300/400 yen and the taste will be like food court Japanese food. Of course, that being said, it can also be quite tasty like there are good tasting food court Japanese food in Singapore

I agree that bento ought to have more variety and colour in the presentation. A lot of work goes into making a bento because it brightens the workers' day. As for the missing plum bits, I can get furikake from Donki or Every Store and add them. These days I just settle for norishō, those seasoned seaweed.

Problem with Japanese Food in food courts in Singapore is that they are done in such a way that they are meant to be cheap. Reason why they aren't made to order like the ones in restaurants is because of the cost, Time to prep each dishes and so on. And it is also one of the reason why teriyaki chicken or alot of the items in the menu are actually fried. It's because they can fry them first then refry then again to heat them back up. Most try to mix Korean and Japanese food as if that they are the same thing but we know that they aren't. If you ever want to try other similar Japanese style food in food court. You have to try and find Washoku Goen in your area's food court as they serve authentic curries and ramen.

The Oyakodon sauce don't use sake because sake is expensive in Singapore. Some Singapore food store are Halah certified, that are catered to Singapore Malay community, who are majority are Muslim, thus cannot have alcohol in it.

my own rule of thumb, in southeast asia including singapore, if you are not sure whether a japanese restaurant is quite legit or not, most of the time ordering katsu curry won't disappoint (of course if it has it). 個人的な経験だけど、東南アジアのあやしそうな和食屋さんで何を食べたらいいかわからない時はカツカレーを頼んだらだいたい大丈夫です!(あればの話だけどね)

I guess presentation was further compromised with these being takeaway. If you dine in, they might probably put a bit more effort in presenting the dish, even food courts. With takeaways in Singapore/Malaysia, I guess they just want to make sure to be able to jam pack everything into what limited plastic containers they have. If I remember correctly, in Japan, if you order a set meal and dine in, it is called teishoku and you get served in nice platters and everything. If you order a takeaway, that's when you get a bento. Bento = takeaway by default, right?
@XenonKirito

Those bento like takeaways do exist but you need to remember that those cost extra money which is why some foodcourt skim on the "authentic packaging to save money.

From watching you, I deserved that you were surprised that at least some of the food was pretty tasty. None though quite made it as far as presentation was concerned & perhaps to special flavour that Japanese enjoy (can't think of what the Japanese call it. Umai maybe?). In my area of rural Australia, we don't have food court Japanese food, which I am happy about. However we do have 2 excellent good Japanese budget type eateries / cafes with qualified Japanese cooks & chefs operating them. The food is so good & service excellent.

I ever eaten one where the curry is so watery/diluted and the potato chunks are so big and not that soft. It's truly disappointing. For real authentic japanese food and worth of your money, we should really just head to restaurants. No doubt about that.
