I read somewhere that they write music and perform as if Satanism had developed like Christianity did. I look at them as performers playing a role; they're no more satanists than Al Pacino is for playing Satan in The Devil's Advocate or Tom Ellis is for playing Lucier in the TV show.
@minette362 жыл бұрын
to be fair, modern satanists don’t believe in/worship satan. its all meant to be a metaphorical rebellion against oppressive religion and celebration of individuality. Ghost is touring right now with a Satanic doo-wop band (Twin Temple) and Volbeat. I recently went to their show… The crowd shouting “hail satan” in unison was powerful. the singer of twin temple opened with an invocation to satan to be a guiding light to scientific understanding, away from supernatural fears, away from bigotry, etc. the symbolism treats it like a parody of catholicism alongside a secular humanist philosophy. at the concert, even volbeat’s singer was wearing satanic symbols and using “devil” and baphomet imagery its definitely meant to evoke actual satanism, just not a literal devil-worship kind.

I let you the meaning of "Nostro Dis Pater - Nostr'Alma Mater", imho the most important line of this wonderful song. ...and please, if you want, read the post scriptum ad the end of this loooong nerdy comment. ----Nostro Dis Pater Both the words are a mix of modern italian and latin. First half italian, second half latin. Now let's check out the meaning of the words: - "Nostro" means "our". In latin it should be "Noster", from "noster, nostra, nostrum", masculine, feminine, and neuter latin words. In italian, the neuter gender is not used anymore: there's only "nostro" for masculine and "nostra" for feminine, both meaning "our". - Dis Pater: here we have the first interesting thing, that gives to the song a very special meaning. "Dis" is a latin word that comes from the latin word "dives": it means "rich". "Pater", as you probably can figure it out, it's the latin word for "father". In italian it is the origin of our "Padre", for the french "Pere", for the german "Vater"... and for Star Wars "Vader" (Darth Vader sounds so similar to Dark Father ). So we have the Dis Pater as a "Rich father" or "Father of richness". When in the song Tobias sings "Nostro Dis Pater" he is thanking and adoring "Ouf Father of richness". What kind of richness? Well, material richness. The ancient Dis Pater god is also called Pluto. Pluto was not the dog of Mickey Mouse. "Pluto" was the ancient greek god of richness, son of Demetra, sister of Jupiter. Have you ever heard about "plutocracy"? So, here we have the first meaning of "He is - Nostro Dis Pater": "He is, our Father of richness". But "Dis Pater" has another meaning. In the ancient times (and still now, somewhere), the "material richness" was represented by bronze, gold, silver, copper, tin etc. If you were a man of the 1500 b.C. you could have found them only by digging. Digging underground. This material richness literally underground. So the God of richness, is also the God of the underground richness. This ancient God of Richness ended up being associated with the concept of the pagan "afterlife". Of course, the ancient Greek and Latin religion did not have Cristian heaven and hell. There was only one "afterlife", the Hades. So the old God Dis Pater became the other name/symbol of the greek god Hades himself, the God of the Underworld. What's the latin name of Hades? Pluto. So we have two Dis Pater: the Pluto of the richness, and the Pluto of the underworld. The line "He is - Nostro Dis Pater" now get a new meaning: "He is - our God of Underworld". Hey, wait a minute! Tobias in almost all songs speaks of the Christian religion and its Prince of Darkness: Satan, or Lucifer, the morning star that Tobias mentions right at the beginning of the song. And what better way to celebrate Satan, if not by representing him with the name of one of the most ancient deities who inspired his figure? We westerners still believe in the ancient greek and latin undeground: we just changed its name in "Hell". And we still afraid of the Devil. Why? Because he can condemn us to eternal suffering. Maybe you know the immortal italian poet Dante Alighieri, who lived in the 1300 and basically "invented" italian language and all the mythology we still believe in. In his masterpiece poem "The Comedy", or "The Divine Comedy", he tells us his fantastic travel through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The poem is full of elements of classical pagan mythology, Christian mythology, philosophy and is a cruel commentary on Italian society in the 1300s. In the Hell (or Inferno) he invented, Dante shows us how the souls of the dead are judged on the basis of their sins and divided into groups, on the basis of the sins committed. Dante calls "Dite" the eternal city of Hell were he puts the souls of those who committed sins voluntarily. In latin, the word "Dis" is used in this way: dis, ditis, diti, ditem, dis... and dite. So to conclude our reasoning about "Dis Pater": Tobias sings about "Him", our Dis Pater, who is our God of Richness, but also the God of Underground, the pagan Hades and the Christian Hell. So, basically, Satan. And Tobias tells us t we must celebrate Him: because he can brings us richness, but also can condemn us to eternal suffering, burning in hell. Not bad, for only two simple words. Not let's moving on to the second half of the line. -------Nostr'Alma Mater Also this one is half italian and half latin. I already told you about "nostr' and its meaning, so let's focus on the word Alma Mater. "Mater" is the latin word for italian "madre", english "mother", german "mutter" etc. "Alma" has two meanings. Alma was - and sometimes is - used by italian poets for the italian word "anima", which means "soul". So, "Alma Mater" could be... Mother Soul. Well, it is not very convincing!! But Alma is still a female name used in Italy. The female name Alma comes from the latin adjective "almus - alma - almum" which literally means nourishing, who feeds us and take care of us. So, Nostr'Alma Mater means "Our Mother who feeds us". Now we have: Our Father of Richness - Our Mother who feeds us. But how does she feed us? Which kind of... food? The most ancient university of the world, founded in a.D. 1088, is the University of Bologna, Italy. If you search for it on Google, you will find that the full name of that university is "Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna". So here we have the second, metaphoric meaning of the "Alma Mater" of the song: knowledge. The "Nostr'Alma Mater" of the song is a Mother who feeds us with knowledge and gives us wisdom. And who is, in christian mythology, the Mother who feeds the human being and gives him knowledge? Yes. The Holy Mary. The mother of Jesus, who lives in Heaven. So now I can conclude the reasoning. What does "Nostro Dis Pater - nostr'Alma Mater" means? It means "Our father of richness - our mother who feeds us". "He is" the one who takes care of us, giving us economic and physical well-being. But also it means "Our father of material richness - our mother of knowledge". "He is" the one who gives us gold, silver... in a word, money, so power. But "he is" also the one who gives us knowledge, wisdom, who take care of our minds and thoughts. And so he gives us the power to think about us, our future, our destinty. The last one meaning? "Nostro Dis Pater - Nostr'Alma Mater" could mean "Our Satan - our Holy Mary". So here we have the most controversial interpretation of the line: on first there's Satan, the Evil, the Male. Then we have Holy Mary, the Good, the Female. Evil and Evil, Male and Female, Hell and Heaven, Darkness and Light. Not bad, for a line with only 6 words. What can I say? Well... Tobias studied well the classics and... damn, he's so good with lyrics!!!! Hope you find all this interesting! Sorry for my english and bye from Italy *p.s: About a year ago I wrote basically this identical comment... and thousands of you liked it so much. But some months ago I changed my user-id on KZbin and all my past comments, included that one, has been delated. That's why I wrote it again, with more informations.

Just discovered this, and I am blown away. I'm an old guy who never believed I would hear the likes of the past masters in their prime (early 1970's), like Alice Cooper or Blue Oyster Cult, again in my lifetime, but these Swedes have done it (not saying they crib from the old bands...Ghost is amazingly original). Metal from the dark side with a talent for melody, and in this one, truly gorgeous harmonies and intelligent lyrics. Venning into Eric Woolfson territory with this single. Highly proficient musicians and vocal work. Listening to various tracks, I'm discovering fantastic diversity in style. Really, I have to thank Sweden for giving us the previous rockers TSOOL, and now Ghost, since Americans and even the Brits don't, or can't, do this any more. In the post-rock era, you just don't expect to find stuff like this, original, and instantly classic. I understand their act, their schtick, and I love it. They're in their prime, like their fans. I sincerely hope they continue their ascension.

The difference between knowledge, knowing, and KNOWING. yada, gnosis; knowledge, experience, wisdom/understanding, union. You can know about someone, you can even know someone, but then there is KNOWING INTIMATELY. I had a shower thought: this song is not about the devil or anyone in particular. This song is about... the Sun. We are standing here by the abyss and the world is in flames - abyss is the cosmos and heat and light from the Sun is the flames. Two star-crossed lovers - the Sun is a star and crosses all lovers ever. A beast with many names - Sun has more names than we can count, every language ever in existence has at least one. A shining of the light without whom we can not see - basically the main function of the Sun for us. Even a tiny ray of light from the sun through a crack is enough to let us see in completely pitch black room. Insurrection, he is spite - no one has any command over the Sun, the Sun does whatever he wants to do. He exists in spite of everything. He's the force that made me be - sunlight is one of the main factors in the creation of life. Without it we wouldn't be. Nostro dis pater, nostr' alma mater - lit. translates as "our pushing father, our nourishing mother". The sun drives us into action every day and gives us energy to live. We're hiding here inside a dream - we sleep at night when the Sun is away. The guidance of the morning stars will lead the way into the void - Sun is the main morning star, the void is again the cosmos. The disobedience that holds us together - again, the Sun obeys no one and the day is what allows the society to function, And we are falling over the precipice - the uncontrolled movement of the galaxies, the stars and the worlds through the cosmos can be called "falling". And there's this part of the video at 3:33. What's that appearing in the background if not the Sun? Not to mention the dark sphere at the beginning of the song with strings emerging from it that look similar to the Sun's coronal loops. This song praises the Sun. Of course... anyone is free to interpret it in their own way. But I choose the Sun. Praise the Sun! ☀ \[T]/

as a theistic satanist, this song means so much to me. no matter what the actual meaning is, i always associate it with Lucifer and i feel so close to him when listening to this amazing band. i wish there were more songs like this one, even though He is darkness, rebelliousness and "badassery", he also is the light, a light that just peacefully shines, tempting but never forcing, so tender and truly safe, unconditional love that does not expect obedience in return but wishes for all of us to feel pleasure, both material and spiritual, to listen to ourselves instead of preaching what to believe in. to me, this is what Satan sounds like. calming, powerful and dreamlike, the sound of freedom without restraints. thank you for letting me see, even what they don't want me to, thank you for the wisdom and the strength to stand proud in a world that wants us to kneel and pray. and thank you Ghost for this beautiful song.

@paytopray14684 жыл бұрын
Just out of curiosity how do you justify being a theistic satanist without running into the moral dillemna of being like "oh wait thats actually satan"?. Ive always wondered; do you just reinterpret the biblical canon to where lucifer was just misunderstood or do you still think hes the devil and just dont care. I think luciferianism os cool because its about the freedom and knowledge aspect but it doesnt work within a theistic framework so are you an actual satanist or a lucifarian?
@cultofthevoid56773 жыл бұрын
Theistic Satanism is the way to go, I'm not a fan of Atheistic Satanism, since it's just Atheism with some added "edgyness". Anyway, I've always felt a strong connection to Lucifer. Even when I was like 6 years old, a bunch of other kids were talking about God at the lunch table and for some reason (I still don't know why) I just said "I believe in the devil" and the other kids looked at me like I was insane.

Satan is negative energy expressed through the prism of matter. God is his logical opposite. The church hid a lot of secrets to get money and control so profession to the logical opposite of that makes you all good people. Your motivation is right, in being wrong,.......... even if the whole story would change your world. Events are so close to happening I can smell the noise from here. The "polar-shift" is upon us and the choice has to be made by every one of us in our hearts....do we remain this meat in hell or realise this is heaven if we remove those who keep us in place and re-create Eden. The universe is four energies, not one! Negative, positive,divide and multiply, interacting in four directions plus the absence of an energy we know as the construct of linear Time, which in 4 dimensions operates differently, and the absence of itself, which we name death but which is the energy called life unfettered by matter so going through it's negative state. Death is not real though, as science was spot-on Energy cannot be destroyed, it will transform into another version of itself. We call this Re-incarnation. We are a store of perspectives unbalanced by unwitting ignorance. This was supposed to be balanced but the church killed the son and forced his twin sister and his mother to run.......their middle name was Mary, their first name was Patricia by the way.....the secret in the line of the father/Pater is rhesus negative blood, a feminine trait! Carried through Tuscany, Southern France and Basque Spain by the Gypsies hiding the daughter from the church. The line ends up in Ireland then England where it is now. The male line the line of Kings is carried through Jesus' little bro Joseph who plants his prick in Glastonbury, England not knowing his sis was really nearby. The Templars knew this but were corrupted, killed or escaped.....to Portugal and Scotland. The royal line of Scotland took the Templar naval flag or Saltire as they're own......when the royal line homogenised with that of England the cross was added to wave a secret in plain site. That's how you draw a 6d universal model. The centre state is achieved by reconciliation of all states together without logical opposition in a single place. Including the absence of itself. This is reconciliation and is expressed as an inverted division sign....so two lines one dot not two dots one line. Balance is everything. We were supposed to exist somewhere between the states in order to find the fulcrum which is in the centre of humanity and which understands all perspectives without judgement or negative associations. Do what thou wilt but do not harm another soul should have been the Law. Be positive and we can change the world. There's so much more....everything is everything, which must include nothing......otherwise it's not everything but that must wait. I need a poo. X

I'm Christian and I listen to this and other satanic musicians. It's music. People give it power or not. Anyone could easily change this song to be about Jesus Christ and yes, they made it song like a Christian hymn to be ironic. I think that both are different sides of the same coin so no one should fool themselves that they are smiting anyone or anything. Energy cannot be destroyed, only transmuted. I listened to satanic music as a teen and was an occultist. Same to the light of Jesus later on. Just remember that satan may have fallen to earth with a bolt of lightning and may be referred to as the illuminator/'truth' teller, but that was the lightning of God's creation that he bolted through on. Make no mistake. We coexist- both sides of the coin.
@seanberge16 жыл бұрын
Drea East Coast- It's kind of funny. How people who think that dark and scary music isn't listened to by Christians. But I know that really isn't the point. I was born and raised a Catholic. I know what the past history is, and the recent evil of what they have done. And unlike many, I don't forgive or forget so easily. Years ago I worked with a guy who was a Mormon. I can't say that I know much about that denomination, I don't. Point is, he confessed to me that Alice in Chains was his favorite band. Layne Staley was still alive at that time. So I asked him what was his favorite song by Alice in Chains. He said "Get Born Again". I was fucking rolling, I laughed, because it was mine too. The darkest music ever made was based off of Christianity. Wasn't the "Exorcist" touted as the best horror movie of all time? What did Black Sabbath, Dio, Alice in Chains, Iron Maiden have against Christianity? Well nothing. They knew there was a market. Bands like Celtic Frost might have a different motivation, but before the advent of the internet I did hear their music. I remember seeing the first album cover that I saw from them. It was Jesus on a crucifix made to be a sling shot. And I think it was a demon wielding it. Fuck it, that's awesome. I wasn't offended. I do understand Black Metal. I do understand that some people have felt that their heritage was stolen. Some would like to return to their heritage, to the gods and religion that was theirs. Before they were forced to adopt Christianity. I get that. And they should have the freedom to do that. Long live Rock-n-Roll, freedom, Jesus (he did build my hot rod, gotta give him props) Odin and Sleipnir his eight legged horse, Anubis. Oh, and of course Lucifer. the most beautiful angel, loved more above all angels. There is so much more.

I don't know if im right or wrong about this, i don't see Lucifer as god since hes the King of hell, gracious mother probably refers to Lucifers wife, Lillith. But this definitely has nothing to do with Islam. Lucifer teaches people to seek the truth in everything rather than blindly following things and seeing them as the truth and the only truth.

For the Ghost nerds, another interpretation of this I spotted is there's a strain of cannabis called "morning star" (mentioned in the lyrics). Substitute 'He' for cannabis throughout the song and you have yet another interpretation ;) Things like "the guidance of the morning star will lead the way into the void", "hiding here inside a dream" and "falling over the precipice" etc etc, all could easily be referring to the use of cannabis ;)

After all those years I'm still here and no matter how many great songs they make, He Is will always be my favourite Ghost song.

+Paula Gallego Como que con "us" incluís a todos :B Ya tocaron con Iron Maiden y Slayer, en el Monumental, y luego, solos, en Vorterix. Quedó como que no los conocía nadie y no es así, jajaja.

I think it's one of the best songs that Ghost has ever done, I'm not a Tananist, but I love the sound of it, it's a work of art
