The Japanese Ghost in the Shell is also very culturally deep with Shintoism and Damashii, spirits. Japanese believe when you create something or anything it has its own unique soul whether a needle, a rice ball, a doll, a kimono or a tool. They also believe the longer the item exist it develops more of a soul, character, and personality. Depending on how its treated it could become good or evil and if long lived begin to animate or move it self and even become a god of sorts. The idea of the Ghost in the Shell is that they used parts of Makoto, a person's mind, while at the same time creating a new body thus a new Damashii or spirit should reside inside, however Makoto receives constant flash backs to her other life, therefore there is a Ghost inside yet the body is new, however with a ghosh insides the new creation it is but a shell. So spiritually for the Japanese how do you make a new body when there is a Ghost inside that just makes the body now a shell and no new soul can take place inside? Does something new still emerge? Do they join together? Think this is a side many American viewers don't see or even know about.
@jorgepeterbarton
@jorgepeterbarton 5 жыл бұрын
I think it translates to western philosophy pretty easily. An essentialist soul vs. mechanistic mind. Something is retained as the 'ghost' but many times the memories and 'personality' are erased, so what is retained,...or what is changed when a personality inhabits a new body... is the whole question...but maybe we miss a little of the reference and connection to this culture- particularly the music is related to folk songs, but then its not just japanese- that's bulgarian folk music! this anime film already mixed up parts, much like Blade Runner or Neuromancer is set in a melting pot of nationalities, i think GiTS was meant to be that too.

I think it will outlive Dark Knight, because it's actually insanely well shot, cut, designed and it's original. I mean, all the verticality, mixing two timelines in one picture, car construction scene, the part where villain is explaining what will happen, but at the end of scene you realize it actually already happened, final scene where reaching finish line morphs into some space odyssey space travel transcendent shit, there's a lot to love.

I am not American, I tried giving anime a chance. I watched Death Note, I watched Another, I tried watching FMA: Brotherhood. First got repetitive very fast, second got a very shitty and anti-climactic ending, the last one was trying to raise very adult problems, while being childish as fuck. Other than movies done by Hayao Miyazaki, I am yet to meet anime that would make me feel as if it is art from start to finish, not just in some rare moments. Perhaps you can suggest a good adult anime?

The people who were angry in the US were Asian Americans. There's a difference between a Japanese person born and raised in Japan and a Japanese person born and raised in the west, one is exposed to racism. Asian Americans wanted to know why Hollywood insists on remaking Asian films while excluding Asians from them....anyway, the movie was a big flop

@jeppemichael 1. It seems that you might not know what cultural appropriation is. 2. We non whites care greatly about the appropriation of our cultures and we don't mind when people appreciate it but sadly many people prefer to be ignorant. Please watch Madonna's Nothing Really Matters music video and then Michael Jackson's Black or White music video and see if you can spot which one is cultural appropriation and which one is cultural appreciation.
@2law2be

@jeppemichael Cultural appropriation is when a dominate group take a custom/practice from a minority group, removes the cultural meaning, and redistributes to the masses as an original idea while profiting from it. Eastern Visions more has been altered, clearly most of her memories have gone... she's pretty much a blank slate conditioned to be a weapon for Hanka robotics to sell to the government. In curious, if we do get a sequel... if she does start to remember more if she no longer takes that liquid that was supposedly to keep the brain from rejecting the cyborg body. i'm guessing it will just be fragments.

That's a good point, I guess because the whole movie was in english, and they had a lot of different ethics and cultures in there too they didn't bother?...I don't know I guess the director just wanted to make it more of a visual movie than anything. I can see what your saying
@easternvisions172

You're right it wasn't as deep and meaningful as the original, but I don't think the new one was suppose to be? the anime is wonderful, but it's quite heavy and complex for a wider audience and for people who aren't into japanese anime as the next person. So what they have done here is just simplified it, and mostly concentrated on the visuals. For such a ambitious movie, I think they did a great job. I don't even know if it would have translated as well if they completely copied it frame by frame, etc, I don't think the western world would have totally got it unless you're a hard core japanese anime fan. Having said that, it still wasn't liked by loads of people, and it was still classed as a flop, which is a shame.

I could not count the number of times I watched that movie. It was one of my go-to movies to watch when I was home sick so a lot. And I have another friend who grew up with it too... Actually, it really weirded me out when I found out. She's only 12 and a half years older than me, and I only really knew about her as more than a name I heard when the Avengers came out, and so she did that film as a teenager.

They copied scenes why can't they just copy the original movie, It's just a live action. With original plot it would have been alright still not might be close to original but decent. They just took a theme and sprayed hollywood style action movie shit on it. Major's struggle wasn't about some external man but herself. It was so internal. damn they spoiled a good plot

@@sleepwalking117 No, they didn't. The story is a total different one, a mere revenge plot. The original story was so much more and revolved around so many more topics. In the original they were literally hunting a ghost in a shell! In this they hunt some angry teenager. The final fight scene against the spider tank made no sense at all in the new movie. Why did she fight it? In the original one she had a time limit, hence she chose to engage it in a david-vs-goliath battle and failed in the end, only to be saved by Batou. As much as i am a sucker for great visuals (and it had amazing ones), the new film fucked up every grander theme of the original and as such is a shell without a ghost.

I think many critics of this movie have a pretty much opposite view. This movie sometimes tries to remake certain scenes from the roiginal shot for shot, and many (myself included) felt that this is something that held the movie back from being a truly original entry in the series. It's a bit similiar to the criticism the new Lion King got. It's a nostalgia bomb (to a degree), but it doesn't have the same depth as the original because of that.

In secret, X is taken by Evil Corporation, has their memories wiped, and is rebuild into an experimental cyborg with superhuman combat capabilities. The public mission statement is "to protect the innocent" or something similar wholesome sounding, but in reality Evil Corporation wants to gain more power and control over society. And more money of course. Anyway, X slowly regains their memories and identity, figures out what is going on, and rebels against Evil Corporation. After a few obligatory action scenes against a formidable foe where X almost seems to fail, Evil CEO is killed and X triumphs. X can be either Murphy or Major Killian. Same story, different visuals. In the manga Kusanagi isn't "the first of her kind," she's an old cyborg. Although she's filled to the brim with state-of-the-art military cybernetics, she looks like a standard factory model. That's why she occasionally sees copies of herself on the street. It's hinted that she became a cyborg in a similar way as in the movie, but her memory was never wiped or manipulated. The Mira Killian alter ego is completely made up for the movie's plot. Kusanagi's personal conflict is her questioning her own humanity after spending decades in an artificial body deep-diving into neural nets and other people's "ghosts." Up to the point where she starts to believe that she's fully synthetic, with artificial memories, and without a ghost of her own. The copies aren't helping either. This is why she is also a raging, foul-mouthed alcoholic who illegally prostitutes _herself_ to other women. To feel something... real. Anime Kusanagi is more brooding and stoic, and far less promiscuous. But otherwise pretty much the same person. Ghost in the Shell is about the meaning of humanity and identity in a transhumanist world that's on the brink of technological singularity. And our main protagonist is quite a mess. So is the world she lives in. Is it even ready for what is happening? In the movie there are a few moments where Major questions _what_ she is, or is becoming, but as soon as she starts to remember _who_ she is, the what becomes mostly unimportant. Her story arc is regaining her identity and autonomy, not transcending the human species and what that would mean. Now I'm not a "purist," I love the movie for its visuals, and Scarlett made a good Major. And I can easily understand why they ditched the manga persona of Kusanagi. But as soon as I figured out what was going on, the movie just became very predictable. I mean, it really is... Robocop.

Why do you think that is? The reason there are "no Japanese action actresses that could act the part" is because Hollywood always replaces the roles of people of color in films with white people and/or just about refuses to cast people of color! If this role was given to a lesser known Japanese actress they would have had a chance to gain popularity and actually become successful. Scarlett Johansson is a very talented actress but part of the reason she was able to gain the success and fame that she has today because she had the opportunity to. If non-white actresses and actors were given that kind of opportunity there could have been a popular Japanese actress to play this part. @Richard Dodge @Chris Stuckmann

Yeah, that's what I was thinking when he showed that clip of Japanese people reacting to the casting. Obviously, Japanese actors living in Japan have no shortage of roles for playing Asians, so it's no surprise that they don't have an issue with a white woman playing the major, but it's very different for Asian-Americans and other non-white actors living in the US.

I'm just impressed that the movie is enjoyable, considering Hollywood's track record with anime adaptations and the like.

Harold Stewart I read that they were actually planning on taping her eyes and doing all you said to make her seem more Japanese but decided not to go through with it. In any case, most of us I think are just a little upset that there's yet again another film where Asians could've had some representation in media but it was completely overlooked in favour of pleasing the white audience and using a big star's name and appeal....I understand it's their way of making sure the movie successful but as an Asian I am sad...

It is but I still hope it does well. I give it a lot of points for staying true to the look of the original because honestly that is a major aspect of manga of anime is the style. With the story they did dumb it down, but it wasn't as a dumb as I was dredding it to be. I hope this allows for more material of this type to be brought to wider audiences. I know a lot of anime fans like it being their own little thing, but the fact is, like comics, this is primed to explode into the mainstream western culture. There are too many genuinely great stories for it not to.

It's a foreign adaptation, so of course we Japanese expect the cast to be different. If we wanted a Japanese live action version, we would've done it ourselves (when a live action adaptation does happen in Japan, often the entire cast is Japanese, similarly to so-called white washing). This is more of an case of people on the internet being offended on behalf of somebody else while it never was an issue for them. There's more practical problem with Motoko's casting; there is no Japanese actress who can do decent action and speak fluent English. You just can't hire a Japanese for this role.
@SantiOwen91
@SantiOwen91 7 жыл бұрын
No, directors can't just cast whoever they want. Casting Scarlet Johanson has nothing to do with miss representing a minority (it's not a minority when she's playing a Japanese character in Japan). It's simply got to do with star theory, which is basically that actors have a fan base and people will watch a film with a certain actor simply because they are a fan. Scarlet Johanson has a fan base and a lot of people don't know what Ghost in the Shell is (let alone understand and appreciate it). What I'm saying is that Johanson was cast to guarantee a certain audience will pay the price of admission as a trailer to some cyberpunk science fiction film with some unknown or lesser known actress wouldn't be appealing to as many people, while to many seeing a well known actress in the role (and trust me you do this too) will now have interest in watching the film based of the logic of "Scarlet Johanson, i like her films, maybe this film will be good".

I felt it was better then the anime. In a lot of ways. The puppet master felt absolutely none existing in the anime. I honestly forgot he was the main objective. This movie did a better job recreating the character and I felt it made wise creative choices that fit the plot and gave it more resolve rather then a cliff hanger that lead to another film where major wasn't even in the second film. So I think it did a better job and gave closure to the story where even if it didn't do well it's a stand alone film and at the same time they could move forward with other plots from the show. So it's a great start. Alita battle angel was the next anime movie that hit a home run in following the story and giving a compelling visual and dialogue.

It is an american film for american people. Sorry if your filmmakers and studios think that you (regular american people) are idiots and can't understand less commom stories. And of course changing the final act of the movie they already set a nort american continuation, but it would be nothing like the Ghost In The Shell 2 Inocence, cause they need Scarlet to star this thing and made a lot of money. But aside the plot it is a quite good flick, and they took entire action sequences from the original one. What kinda make this a poor stuff, cause the better stuff is the stuff from the animation. Anywais way better than I've expected to be and probably the better live action north american adaptation that I saw from a classical anime.

Not for the sake of it, but the bone crunching assaults and the shootouts kept leaving me feeling like they’d bent over backwards to avoid letting us see any blood, for the sake of the certificate? And, this review should have mentioned Michael Pitt’s brilliantly ambivalent performance, don’t you think? His voice, movement, everything about him, as the antagonist, goes from dark, brooding and sinister, when we meet him, to little boy lost and rather a sympathetic figure by the end. I had no idea that Pit was even capable of such a nuanced performance! More blood, and it would have been an, “A+”, for me. That’s why I just give it an, “A.”

I personally hate the term weebs. But when you hate something for stupid reasons like ethnicity or story changes, you deserve being called a weeb. Hell, even lotr is not 1:1 replica of the books. Changing things is not necessarily bad if the end product is good.

Thanks for a measured, respectable review. I can't stand the BS reviews I've seen about this film. Mamoru Oshii the original creator of Ghost in the Shell actually helped cast Scarlet Johansnon!!! He gave his blessing!!! People make out like Hollywood fckng stole the IP then raped the shit out of it in dark castle in the woods somewhere. This movie rocked.

I believe that the movie would not have financial success in the West if they cast an Asian actor for the lead. An expensive undertaking for the studio..they had to at least recoup. Business, you know? Just reality. Great film though.

Firstly, I am NOT someone upset by the casting. I always like when movies chose to be more diverse with their cast but this isn't a case that particularly upset me. People in Japan don't have trouble finding examples of Asian people in media because their country is predominantly Japanese. They watch TV and Movies all the time starring Japanese people. People who are worried about representation are worried from an American, Canadian, etc point of view where where we meet a variety of people in our day to day lives but our media tends to represent only white people. Again, I am NOT upset at this casting. She's a cyborg. She doesn't look super 'asian' in the original anime, as anime styling goes. But to say 'we shouldn't be upset because japanese people aren't upset' is kind of missing the point.

look at their live action Attack on Titan. An anime where there is literally only one Asian character, yet everyone cast is Japanese. To me, it only matters if the actor can pull off the role - we were all fine with Sam L Jackson playing Nick Fury
@Kentama
@Kentama 7 жыл бұрын
The reason we shouldn't be upset is because the Major is Japanese --- _not_ Asian American. Asian Americans =\= Japanese people. The fact that people are complaining without taking into consideration the feelings of actual Japanese people, just goes to show that people are bringing an agenda to this movie.

As I watched the original film first, then watched SAC, both seasons in fact, and Arise before watching this remake, I really appreciate how this adaptation took certain elements from everything so far. Not just direct recreations of certain scenes. For example, Kuze was the main antagonist in SAC: 2nd GiG. In the Nightclub scene, Major is dressed all in red leather, which is of course a reference to Arise. And Chief Aramaki only speaks Japanese, which is a call back to the original film in it’s original Japanese Dub.

The problem isn't Scarlett Johansson, the problem is that there aren't any roles for Asian Americans. It's like they don't even exist to Hollywood. Of course people in Japan don't care because they already see Japanese people in their movies. But to us Asian Americans we really don't get much representation in American media.

Luke Hmmm so as a third generation Asian American who has never left the US, can't speak a word of Chinese (my ancestral language), I should go back to China if I want to have a fair shot at non-stereotypical major acting roles or to see my race fairly represented in the media? Am I not American enough or deserving a fair shot at these roles because I am not white? :( The US was created to be the home of immigrants and land of equality/opportunities for all, so that doesn't make much sense to me. According to population projections, in a few decades, white people will no longer be the majority and minorities will make up the majority instead. And that's the beauty of the US melting pot! Hollywood constantly makes money off of commodifying nonwhite cultures, it would be nice to see some Asian faces in these Asian worlds they create so well and so beautifully.
@luke8853
@luke8853 7 жыл бұрын
I never said it's fair, why does it have to be fair? The whole thing is a non-issue, you have much bigger problems in your life, try to be a grown up and deal with it. Also your ideas about what America is supposed to be is wrong, times change. You might not find that fair either, but again, it doesn't have to be fair.
@abbizoh
@abbizoh 7 жыл бұрын
Luke I understand that life isn't fair, but this is a big issue for many Asian Americans and other minorities who aspire to become actors/actresses, and are ignored primarily bc of their race. I don't think my idea of what America is supposed to be is wrong. The US was founded on principles of equal opportunity, to fight against oppression and inequality. That's why we have things like freedom of speech, individual rights, etc. I do agree that life isn't fair though, but as an American I think you have a right to strive towards equality and fairness.

Alisha Pisha the reason scarlo was casted was because she will draw in more people to watch the movie. I feel this was business decision in order for the film to be made in the first place. so I think this white washing is a non issue because you should be mad at the studio for not taking a chnace with a American asian actor. why?. because I feel this too. less white people would have seem this movie if scarlo wasn't in this movie. and the majority of people that pay movie tickets in the US???. White people.

"Speed Racer" isn't for everyone, but I agree. I actually really like the movie as well. While I can be a huge advocate of having good acting and stories in movies, there are times I get swept up by the colorful landscapes, action and the theme that I can bypass that critiques and have fun with a movie. Sometimes I don't want to watch a "Godfather" level movie. Sometimes, I just want to enjoy an "Armageddon" level movie.

Finally watched this movie... few years late. But the one thing that helped me swallow the scarlet jo playing motoko, was the ending realizing who she was and that her body isnt the representation of her. So her brain is Japanese but her body is white which is what Hanka created. Technically she’s still Japanese and it’s hanka who white washed. Dreaded seeing this movie (huge fan of source work) Was hugely surprised by this movie. To bad it did bad in the box office :/ a sequel would of been amazing!

Why take an actress who is not ready to go full nude? They should have taken a Japanese actress and for star power added some Hollywood actors. I also think the anime was deep so much philosophy deep thinking. With Scarlett caliber actress this should have been the case but unfortunate. I agree with chris completely!! loved this movie, people need to stop having a stick up their asses about the original. yes the original was very good, and i would agree it is better. People have to realize that nothing can ever be exactly like the original source, in this movie they did a very good job at including as much as possible and even sometimes a play by play from the anime, like how some people fight/fall/flip in the anime were almost the exact same in this movie +dialog. Those people saying it was like a completely different movie.. i think that says a lot about your thoughts on the original.. because a lot was exact, with added scenes. Overally it was still a very good adaptation.
@Rpahut1
@Rpahut1 7 жыл бұрын
No one expects it to be exactly like the original. But then the derivative can be worse or better, and this movie is a case of former. Which you agree with it seems - and then you say you loved it?! There are parts that deserve A+, and ones that fall through into C territory, and A- is probably a fair rating overall. But somehow all good parts are the ones taken from original, and everything they have "added" in the movie only detract from what it could have been, which begs the question of what was the point of making it at all.

Hey ruben Baeza how does it feel to be wrong? Sure they are in japan but have you seen the Og 1995 GITS? they clearly designed shells to look like different races the puppet master has blond hair and big blue eyes, what you don't understand is the brain or the ghost is japanese but the shell is made to look like american, They probably sell the shells all over the world that's why they made different looking shells. Your argument is that it is just a design choice but there are other female japanese looking characters in GITS yet they go out of their way to make the puppet master and the major to look western, it is not a design choice they purposely made them to look western. Your opinions are full of error and I therefore considered them as garbage, get that through your skull

@Devilsblood 6 жыл бұрын
urmamaisnoob you do know they dye their hairs in Japan as well right? Justifying Americanism in other countries is a stupid excuse to have reasons as to why white people should always be the heroes in the story. Had an Asian woman been casted in the film, I bet you would upset by it because you can't buy into another colored person saving the day for a change. Don't be twisting my arm into believing that the character was made to be without a race background because we might as well have them be black instead and you would have a problem with that as well.

I honestly loved this movie, and it makes me so sad to see all of the negativity towards it. As a person who loves the 1995 anime film as well as Innocence, going into this movie I tried to keep as open a mind as possible, and I am honestly glad I did. Seeing a fresh look at the story was enticing for me, and the stylistic things they drew from the source material were like the icing on the cake for a person invested in the source material like me. I feel like the majority of the hate for this film draws from the "white washing" or "straying from source material" crap instead of the actual content of the film, and it really makes me sad that this movie isn't getting the credit it deserves. Judging a movie by who was cast in it is not what decides if the movie was bad or not. They casted Scarlet Johansen for a reason, and her performance was PERFECT as Motoko Kusanagi (just the right amount of curiosity mixed with somber expressionless characteristics). Even in the manga Motoko had features similar to those of a Caucasian woman, along with the majority of other female characters in popular anime. Furthermore, this is a world where the major is given a synthetic body, it doesn't matter what it looks like or what "ethnicity" the robot body is, she could have it look however she wanted. Chris I fully agree with you on your review of ghost in the shell and I am disheartened that the current state of the films reception may prevent future installments of the story

I too thought Scarlett's performance was great. She did a lot of little things really well. I even noticed that she would hold her hands like a doll or action figure would have their hands placed. On a thematic level it was dumbed down, but I also thought it introduced themes without bothering to actually flesh them out or make something of them. I was also disappointed on the lack of Section 9 acting as a squad (though that might be a holdover from SAC) with Togusa and Saito included only as a nod to their existence in the anime. Overall, very good film and well worth seeing.

Hi Chris, did you realize: Major's new name is Mira Killian, and as Dr. Ouelet said: Her existence is a "miracle". Get it? M I R A K I L (Lian). She is a M I R A C L E. I wonder if this pun was intended.

i enjoyed this movie and thought i would deserve more love, but for me it wasn't brilliant as the anime. The main focused in this movie was the Major (Scarlett Jo) and her Identity. Who is she or was she. While the anime focused on the question what defines a human being, its more a philosophically abroach. And that is what makes the movie so special. Is it the body that makes a human being, his mind, or the fact that he is able to think and creates a concousness. Hollywoods Ghost in the Shell's theme is a often used one. The main protagonist doesn't know about her/his past and then discovers who she/he was and questions her/his current standing.

What make's you think a score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes is a BAD thing? That's actually good. Are we the generation of hyperbole now? Can things just be GOOD anymore?

Buffalo Black Apparently people think any percentage of 80% or lower is a bad thing. Idiots I swear. And what is it with people listening to other reviewers? Watch the god damn movie and make up your own opinion, fuck.

As someone who has no interest whatsoever in manga or anime, I went to this film with an open mind, no expectations. My verdict? Meh. Nicely done and all that, but it didn't move me. I really wasn't fussed about the lead character's journey, or all the issues and dilemmas attached to it. And I couldn't help but think of two words throughout the film: Blade Runner. A solid 7/10

Blade Runner was 1982; original Ghost in the Shell was 1989. Take from that what you will. I'm not saying the original took anything from Blade Runner or its source novel, but, it may or may not have been influenced by it and Dick's early work. Also, I'm not certain how much a lot of the 80s anime people were influenced by earlier things like the original Heavy Metal magazine and other such sources. I think it's safe to say that Blade Runner influenced a lot of later work, but it's clear that the original Ghost in the Shell is its own work, it stands on its own. In no way is it a copy of anything preceding it. But stylistically it's difficult not to see the imprint of Blade Runner, particularly on this film adaptation. And some of the themes are quite similar.

I agree. Sure it was different and had a few slow bits but the characters had a lot of emotional pull and the movie was crazy, silly and fantastical just like the show was in the 50's.

acting was bad in like 20 minutes of the film same with the effects, other than that the effects were amazing especially in the last race. Last 30 minutes of the film are actually pure perfection. The movie just suffers from fleshing out the younger brother character too much.
