Man, this took some time to get out, but here it is! I hope you'll enjoy this extra long video on Ghost in the Shell and the new Netflix adaptation. Also, this channel just hit 600 subs! Thank you all so much. Here's to hoping we can hit 1000 before the year is over! Edit: I was made aware of a mistake I made in this video. Despite having looked at the scene in question many times during editing, I never actually noticed that the it says Dudweiser on the beer and not budweiser. So yeah, that's 100% my fault on not catching that.

I mean I watched it and liked it gave me old school vibes with a new coat of paint. I could direct Parrales to certain episodes that still held their power to it. For example in the 3 rd or 4th epidoe in the raid dealing with a suit brought me back to the majors fury. Or the simple bank episode with batto humanizes him more too. ThinkPol even feels rather " laughing man" to me in certain regards. Then again I just really enjoy GitS in general the Major will always be the Major and SaC is still my favorite version of GitS 2045 still stand sup to Sac original too IMO. looking forward to season two. And from an art style perspective I find the younger looking Major visually appealing. 1995 version is good too but I certain like this rendition of the Major the best so far.

You do realize that this series was still produced by Production IG and is largely made up of the same team who worked on the original series, right? Netflix just licensed it and likely had very little influence in the way of creative input.

@@AtariDad you do realise you are completely and utterly wrong, right? The team that did SAC_2045 is largely the same team that did Ultraman in 2019. That team has next to nothing in-common with the team(s) that did any of the original series.

@@RockSolitude Kenji Kamiyama wrote and directed both series, and both series were produced by Production I.G. If you're trying to make the point that the team within Production I.G. was completely different from the original series, then that's fair, but it doesn't take away from my main point which was to say that saying that Netflix somehow had total creative control over this and was responsible for how it turned out is just absurd. Also, I think that painfully mediocre Bladerunner anime has kind of proven that Kamiyama has lost his touch and I'm now not terribly confident in that Middle Earth animated movie about Rohan that he's working on for Warner Bros.

your point on george orwell inpiration is little bit too picky. it is referenced there because it is related to what post humans are trying to do. that's why that book inspired them to imagine their goal. but the real problem is we still don't know what their true goals are and how it is related to orwell's dystopian world. did they want to convert world into that type of dystopian world or they believe that they can save the world from becoming like that? it iwill be really great if they expaned it and show how it truly connect with orwell's world because i think they try to do that same thing. don't forget that it is written by same person who wrote both seasons of SAC. so i think they can make a gripping and fantastic story like those seasons. we just need to watch it. main problem for this show now is it's unfinished state. And everything just look like introduction and it will be going expanded upon. and i think orwell's dystopian novel going to play a role in it.

I disagree with what you said. I thought the show had plenty of meat on its bones. The CGI is bad at times, but GitS has always used CGI and it fits the show and the theme. The voice actors were great and I was okay with the character designs. I'm just happy to have gotten a sequel. You can't always get amazing seasons like Gits SAC and SAC 2nd GIG. It's a Netflix adaptation which is great by itself - it means that anime has enough traction outside of Japan these days. Honestly I feel like you're just being negative and close-minded. Sustainable war is a good concept and so is post-humanism.
@AnimeTopScholar

If they could explore the sustainable war and post-humanism properly, I'd agree with you. But as of right now I feel like they didn't for the reasons stated. I'm glad that there's people who disagree with me and part of the reason why I even made this video in the first place was because I wanted to see others thoughts on it as well. I don't want an echo-chamber where everyone just regurgitates my opinion back at me.

Just come onto this following my Ghost in the Shell pilgrimage that I take every few months. The franchise is easily my favourite of all time, which has lead to me being extremely critical of these new approaches. Now with Arise, I feel it was overly complex and counter intuitive, mainly as a result of us following the plot via Motoko's perspective, who is largely in the dark until the final act of most episodes. This makes Motoko obviously seem far less impactful than she was in previous iterations but also leaves us following a breadcrumb trail of evidence that actively just confuses much of the story. But as it stands, I did enjoy it and I thought it was a welcome change of pace. Now SAC_2045 to me was just awful, now I did enjoy a couple of small pieces like it's visual representation of hacking. But the overall plot and scenes are just so Hollywood schlock. And the biggest representation of this is their first proper infiltration mission, in which their opposition is a bunch of well funded American football players and students. Yes, they're well funded, but they have zero military skills, and yet for the purpose of tension, our highly trained agents fail in an attempt to apprehend them. Compared to the original SAC series where their first fire fight is against ex military requesting the removal of Chinese immigrants.. it's political and fascinating! Another issue is also the post human aspect.. don't get me wrong, the original film had hints of this, but it's clearly so watered down to "robots want humanity gone" that it just blends in with a massive crowd of american cyberpunk titles. One more thing I wanted to quickly add was their bizarre approach to continue from the previous seasons as character development essentially just went out the window, I mean Togusa was always unstoppable in his pursuit of justice but he would never risk his marriage and parenthood as a result, because he valued his humanity above all else. And Batou, despite being an ex marine, he was easily the most sympathetic/empathic of the group, even so much as being prone to bouts of irrational actions to empathise with even the antagonists of certain episodes, but we're led to believe that he just joined Motoko in America because killing people is great and they get paid a lot for it? Like no, these characters are all wrong. Also thought it was strange to completely undo Prime Minister Kayabuki's actions and just have her replaced by an American stand in, as if SAC season 2 wasn't the team actively trying to stop Gouda colluding with the US to take over the Japanese government, but oh, nevermind, they pretty much got their way in the end anyway! Just so bad and I've lost all interest in a following season.

Watch it again bro, it’s explained that they don’t want to kill people in the sustainable war at the end of E1 when they release them at the end. as well as that people can download combat software from sac s2 when she recruits the saito. There’s also a 20 year gap between sac 2 and this which is slowly being filled in.

I really don’t get what peoples beef is the CGI the reason that CGI Anime fail is because they try to shoot it like it’s 2d they don’t do that here they literally make use of the 3-D the way it should be and that is why it’s utilized well the story is brilliant and the 3-D allows them to do things that they couldn’t before and allows even the dumb voice actors to articulate their voice is more The difference is that it utilizes the CG well opposed to a show that does not That is the reason why the CG looks so good because they don’t try to make it look 2d I’ll because everyone expects that even when the seat in front of them they don’t understand how well it is shot speaking as an animation student by the way that utilize the 3-D environment and the camera to a level that I had not anticipated and it is gorgeous And another thing about the animation there’s less animation in a in 2d Drawn style Then 3-D what ghost in the shell have done is push the boundaries of animation like they did all those years ago Showing us that there is merit in 3-D but people have too much of a stigma around it to even bother giving it a chance people just say they look ugly because they’re 3-D how I don’t see it the models look gorgeous

Listen, the plot's writing and animation are lackluster, those are fair points, I don't think anything can argue that. But you made a 15 video with 10 minutes of 'context', then 5 minutes explaining your thesis and glossing over your supporting arguments, all of which turned out pretty weak. Not great content.

Uh... that very _clearly_ isn't product placement. It said "Dudweiser," it was satirizing a product. This is something that TV shows have done for years, especially anime with characters eating at places like "WcDonald's" instead of "McDonald's." It's mostly just an easy way of making a fictional world seeming more like our world by putting in products similar to ones that we might have in our world, but with a slight change in the name to avoid any potential lawsuits. This very clearly is not product placement, Budweiser isn't paying them to have their product in their show, otherwise the beer would have just been called "Budweiser."

You didn't mention Shirow's sequel mangas - to be fair most people won't as the eroticism that was pretty out there in the original goes into overdrive and pretty much blinds you to anything else xD but still I think those have value as works pertainig to consciousness and the evolution of society and technology, if only Shirow could get over his cybergirl fetish xD Anyway nice analyses, a good idea alone is nothing the execution needs to be good for the show to be good.

Literally 10 minutes of this video is just reading the Wikipedia summaries of all of the series, which like 50 other youtubers have already done. The rest of this video is making the same complaints as with any other “review essays” on youtube about the new series. The only redeeming feature for them is that they had the courtesy to not be late with their reviews.

@@AnimeTopScholar when you do get past the badly animated (not drawn, I think the 3d models are great, but there's just something about the movement) CG, it does play a lot like SACs. I think the main problem here, besides the badly paced story, is actually the horribly developed, or better, evolved characters. We get 1 side-story episode for Batou, we get another for Togusa. But then Batou is pretty useless on the show other than being recipient of praise by a pointless female-audience-reaching flat character, and Togusa... Well, becomes Bruce Lee. What about a Major episode? And the American Black dude... Man they stereotyped him to the bone, he's the most one-dimensional of them all (save maybe John Smith).

What makes cheap references worse is the fact that 1984 is actually used as a backbone here. Sustainable war is a concept from the book. So they wanted to use that in a deeper way. It kind of doubles the sourness of the execution.
