Yeah, I know this is just a video game and a fictionalized version of the Mongol Invasion. But damn, as someone who reads history. This game is so inaccurate. For example, the armor design of the Samurai and Sakai Clan armor are anachronistic, those armor came later in the 16-17th centuries. The sword design is a katana. But the game takes place in in the 13th century when Japan still used "tachi" which is a curvier sword. The katana was invented in response to the Mongol's hard and thick armor not being able to penetrate the brittle and weak blade of the tachi. (Though in Japanese dub, the sword is called tachi, accurate) But, the thing I really hate is there's not a single samurai who wields a bow! Only like Ishigawa and Jin! Because a real samurai wasn't only a master swordsman, but also an archer! In fact, swords of samurai are mainly for secondary use! In fact, I don't see any samurai who wields spears or war clubs. And yes samurai also knows other weaponry not just swords! The Mongols too are kind off disappointed, because why does this game don't have any Mongol cavalry?!! Umm hello, that's what they were widely known for! They are master archers on horseback. In the game, they ride horses, yes, but when they see Jin, those Mongols immediately dismount to fight you in the ground! Also, the hwacha is not even a Mongolian weapon, it's a rocket launcher developed in Joseon (Korea) in the late 16th century! And what's so ironic is the hwacha was created due to the Japanese invasions of Korea! How about that "samurai code" also known as Bushido? It wasn't fully developed in the 16th century. Also, that samurai fights with pure honor is just romanticized of Hollywood or Kurosawa fiction. In fact, a samurai wasn't only a warrior but a strategist too. They would applaud you for innovative or unconventional tactics. Furthermore, when Shimura arrests Jin by the Shogun due to his dishonorable acts, it's all bullsh1t. What's this the Jedi Order? No, the Shogun wouldn't do something weird like that. This is just scratching the surface there are still a lot of inaccuracies but, this is just a video game I get it! But it still hurts... (Sorry for the bad English, I'm a Filipino)
@johnconnorpliskin71846 ай бұрын
It definitely screams of a more stereotypical Westerner’s perspective of Japanese history. Despite delving into absurdity, Yakuza Ishin and Rise of the Ronin feel more historically accurate, owing largely to the fact that Japanese developers made both games. I think it’s also telling since Sucker Punch said their game was more of an ode to Akira Kurosawa films than anything else. It’s just that SP’s version feels so devoid of cultural context in a lot of ways that it ends up feeling like a product.

I feel they should've put more effort into the side quests etc. The world is absolutely beautiful and the swordplay is very fun. Stealth didn't really feel innovative at all. You just sneak behind or over the enemy and press a button. The enemy AI doesn't really react to your stealthy approach, meaning even if the enemy catches a glimpse of you, they rarely go check it out. I ended up challenging the enemy head on every time and because of that the story didn't quite match up. Jin Sakai was not the Ghost for me, except for the poisoning of the mongol troops. Also NO CUTSCENES for the sidequests except for the stories of your allies. Despite it's flaws I think it was one of the best games I've played in a while.

You don’t NEED to get every single open world thing in the game. You can complete the game without them. You can take some while going to main quests n side quests, but if you complain about being a checklist perfectionist.. i mean, that’s just ridiculous, isn’t it? How many years would this game have taken if they had a 60 different small open world tasks? The health and resolve increases are that, health and resolve increases. You don’t need to do them if they’re too boring. There aren’t even too many of them in the open world?? Yeah, i get the foxes, those get boring and annoying, but man.. everything else is nice, unless you have an incredibly short attention span.. if you see some of the very small side quests in GOT as just "walk, fight, save" you might as well look the same cynical way at every repeating task in any game. That’s the thing with games. Some tasks repeat. Oh no. Some quests are bigger than others, wow. That’s how the world works... damn i get bored every single time i need to take a shit on the toilet! It’s so repetitive! I wish my asshole would tear from time to time.. *(im incredibly sorry)* But the thing is, if you aim too high and make 70+ quests a totally unique experience.. wouldn’t it 1. Be sorta impossible, 2. Run like shit? Take a millennial? Like imagine finishing the beautiful and emotional main quest with your team, and then breaking out of your human form, transcending your current plain of existence to work on creating a totally new and unique experience for small missions with the world you have? Man, by the end there’d be dragons overdosing on bubblegum in mongol armor in the skies, like.. the world is limited with the shit you can do in "old” japan right? Of course lord shimura must be remembered, in STORIES, to have a character be of more importance than others you need to make them more important.

I decided to play this game without checking the reviews online (that and because it came with my system) and I can honestly say this game is trash and a pain in the ass. The controls seem bulky and laggy, the moves don’t register half the time and it seems buggy and glitchy. There’s a bunch of unnecessary dialogue you can’t seem to skip pass and the enemies are walking talking cheat codes. This game sucks.

This is probably the best analysis of "Ghost of Tsushima" I've seen. Great video! I think GoT is a solid game with fun combat, okay story and a beautiful world. However, I am sick of people glazing it, like it's some outstanding masterpiece. So many people insist that Ghost should have won GOTY 2020 instead of The Last Of Us 2, and I think that's just INSANE! The Last Of Us 2 is more impressive in pretty much every aspect you can analyze: story, characters, dialogues, cutscenes, combat, stealth, immersiveness, world interactivity, emotional impact, music, themes, AI, physics, and so on. People who think Ghost is better have no idea what they're talking about.

Thank you for this review. I completely abandoned Ghost of Tsushima on PS4 ages ago but picked it up again when I finally managed to get a PS5 a few weeks ago. 60FPS made the game more tolerable but I found myself feeling extremely bored very quickly. I try to 100% every game I play, but the repetitive nature of the open world and the “press button to make health increase” nature of all the side content made me abandon my incessant need to 100% my games and just burn through the story as quickly as humanly possible. The combat was the only thing I truly enjoyed in that it made me feel extremely overpowered coming out of a 20v1 encounter having not taken a hit, but all the encounters are so similar and so repetitive that they manage to lose their lustre too. Honestly looking at all the reviews and videos gushing over this game confused me and made me consider if I was losing my touch with gaming or something. I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt this way about Ghost of Tsushima. A visually stunning, competent but wholly underwhelming and shallow experience cluttered with boring and repetitive missions.

the game's issue is that it's an open world with ZERO justification for being so. it clearly screams design as a hub based semi open world like sekiro. maybe they could even have shipped the game with a honor system and a branching path narrative if they didn't commit to spending resources on open world meme, because the game's narrative and design just screams traces of a honor system.

You're just explaining what every game is. Every game gets repetitive at a point. It really just comes down to how invested in the world you are that determines if you want to put more time into it.
@csl94952 жыл бұрын
Every similar game is repetitive in the fact that you go to some destination on the map to start a mission and complete it but with GoT its repetitive in mission design. All the mission length were the same length and cut scenes were the same length. Nothing dynamic happens. You go on these missions, meet your companion, go to raid or fight some enemies and done. Comparatively to Rdr2 and Witcher 3 there was so much more going on. I couldn't love this game as much becasue I noticed it just was lacking what these two games executed so well. Only thing I truly loved about GoT was the combat, only when raiding the castle with my group of companion facing hordes of enemies... not really when I was out and about traveling. On that note there wasn't many missions that did that. And comparatively to an action driven game, where the character feels totally bad ass killing large groups of enemies... GoT did that kind of, but not as well as the GraveWalker from Lord of the Rings Shadow of Mordor/War. And you can tell it also drew from Lotdr too due to the combat focus and the scaling of buildings or objects, just not as enjoyable. I felt like GoT was trying to do everything what these games did great and lost focus. Hence it does some familiar things we all enjoy... so we enjoy the game but as the reviewer said something was empty about it.
@YEY0806 Жыл бұрын
@Csl, the real issue is less repetition. It's the fact that by the start of Act II you pretty much have everything you need and the game is too simplistic. Finding another fox shrine, hotspring, side quests, collectables and pillers is no longer gratifying since the gameplay isn't evolving and the rewards feel minimal as your already overpowered so doing more will just further break the game.

I will say they had a pretty good comedy relief character but for 75$ it's a waste. Also if you think about some of the small too much it crumbls the world a little more. Why does gear of legendary samurai give you a assasanation boost? Or even better why do the gods support the assasanation? Cool soundtrack though.

@@Shaolinstoutits because just saying got sucks and that fly Cooper and infamous are better games are literally just terrible takes. And he's nitpicking on a lot of things. You can simplify every single game and make it seem bad. "All dark souls games is go around fighting bosses" "all rdr2 is just shooting and robbing" all gta5 is shooting and robbing. U see my point. And his content himself is low effort. His jokes ain't funny at all

Beautiful game but absolutely terrible gameplay. Got bored so damn fast, missed essential character side missions that play into the main story. Tons of terrible side missions. Oh and not to mention the entire game is supposed to be becoming a ninja and the AI stealth mechanics are similar to original Xbox and ps3 games. So sad it was such trash haha. Best fights were duels, should’ve been based around those mechanics

Gameplay was so bad but that's a ps exclusive for you they focus on graphics and give bare minimum on gameplay. Look at horizon zero dawn I absolutely loved that game but gameplay there's hardly anything to it but jump, role and shoot. Ghost of Tsushima was a massive let down

The only reason why it got praised so much is because TLOU2 came out around the same time.. and sucked. I Pre-ordered GOT, and was REALLY disappointed.. same "villages" same houses.. generic story.. generic everything. I finished it and sold it straight away. It's just a 5/10 game for me.

Ghost of Tsushima is magical the first half, but still no one has done what Witcher 3 did. The thing with Witcher 3 was that it was representing something new all the time for the player with little to no repetition, the open world didn't have any repetitive scenarios that was randomly computer generated, instead most of the things on the map was thought out, and everything was so well done that you didn't know if it was a small side-quest or a main mission, and the lack of repetitiveness was striking compared to other open-world games. The problem with Ghost of Tsushima is the usual, after a while you get tired of the random events that happens over and over, and collecting things and foxes are just the same after the same.

I would have loved a modified version of the dishonored system where if you stealth the game it changes the world and if you fight by the code or whatever it also changes the world accordingly. I could completely not bother with the stealth and still be forced into doing stealth

Nailed it. With the Iki Island "expansion" out now, Sucker Punch seems to be pulling a Ubishit on us. After what Ubistank did to Ghost Recon Wildlands, Sucker Punch is looking real familiar. Real familiar.

Yes the story was ok, a bit boring more of the same just this time Jin is trying to get over his "Daddy issues", and after beating the side quests I just can't bring myself to finish the other activities, it's so boring.

@@Ace-dv5ce Iki island isn't bad it's reminds me of the difference between fallen ghost and wildlands right now. I hoping fans like myself who pay lots of money for this stuff get what we want. The bug fixes do come out pretty often, that's good. I'm hoping there are add ons or dlc to address other issues before we have a list of different game modes to choose from. That said, I'm gone go play right now.

The world is itself is so bland. The lack of music when you're exploring makes it seem empty. Unlike GTA, Witcher 3, the world just doesn't seem lived in. When you're exploring, you know when you find a village, it's the same process every time, go into the house that is the same one every time, climb the ladder that is in the same place. Pick up your few supplies. That's my biggest gripe. The menu and levelling up elements was fine for me.

I'd like to start this by saying I am currently 2 minutes into the video. While this is a *clear* as crystal indication on the lack of knowledge I have with the video, I've been reading the comments, and they make some interesting points in both ways. Considering my situation (which I will go into detail about), I'd like to make a measured response to the debate. **SPOILERS FOR GHOST OF TSUSHIMA -- RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2** Coming off of the heels of my groundbreaking and life-changing gaming experience with Elden Ring, I had to have more. I got into the other souls games. Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, Dark Souls 1, 2, even bloodborne. The only game in the "soulsborne" colloquial series I havent played is demon's souls. Access to the original, and better, version of the game is hard, since the only way is through Emulation. I'm sure I can figure it out some day. All of that is to say that these games are my favorite, still. Recently too, I finished Red Dead Redemption 2, and then it's predecessor RDR1. Phenomenal fucking story. In the same way that Elden Ring's vast, seemingly endless open world built on the mysteries of past civilizations, past gods and the philosophies therein, Red Dead 2 (and for different reasons RDR1), blew me away with how *personal* it got. How close to the soul it got with even less empathetic characters like Micah. Dutch and his paternal-adjacent control over the Van Der Linde Gang. It's as though I played through a movie. Just like Elden Ring, to me, it is a perfect game beginning to end. To give credit to RDR1, it's similarly beautiful to me for different reasons-- It feels as though it is the closing statement of the thesis that is Red Dead Redemption 2. But, in its silence it does leave a *little* to be desired in comparison to its prequel. To me that doesn't take much off of what it seems to be-- a closing statement. Redemption. All of this comes to a head when I would start Ghost Of Tsushima very recently. Being who I am, a person who finds feudal japanese history not only interesting but cool, Ghost of Tsushima stuck out, because of course it did. And being as I am critically and artistically, I went in open-minded to potential historical inaccuracies in the name of the "ideal presentation" and the story the game wishes to tell. Reaching act 3, I am totally fine with saying that it's becoming monotonous. Of course it would, considering how I have been very thorough with it. In the same way I was with games like RDR2, RDR1 and the soulsborne series. But the game, Ghost of Tsushima, has been great on the fronts that I personally believe matter to me the most: gameplay, and its visual expression. It's not better to look at than Elden Ring in my eyes, or Red Dead in its hyper-realism, but I like the more dedicatedly-unreal approach it takes to its visuals. What irks me the most about Ghost, though, is many of the things I would say most people agree with me on. Cutscenes (for the most part), quest design, and the story's subtlety. On Cutscenes: it's strange to me that the cutscenes in this game, for the most part, are so uninteresting. With such a beautiful world and unprecedented access to good hardware/software for this game to be as intricate as possible, the cutscenes being as samey as they are is super sad. To compare yet again, Red Dead 2. Pretty much *ALL* of its cutscenes are extremely high quality and are also very personal in their execution. Down even to sidequests. I know that Ghost was under a significantly smaller development time under a significantly smaller group of developers, but artistically it sours what good the game does with its presentation. On quest design: Quests in Ghost of Tsushima are vastly samey. Many of them feel deeply unimportant as well, only serving to establish The Ghost as the monolithic figure it becomes. Which, sure, is very important to the ideological notion the game wishes to portray-- that traditionalist ideals are limited/limiting in nature-- yet it doesn't feel personal. None of the quests I feel inform Jin's character in a way that, comparing yet again, Red Dead 2 does. Quests like Arcadia for Amateurs, while given equal care in regards to presentation as the rest of the game's quests, also inform the development of Arthur Morgan. In Colter, he is deeply uncaring-- but he knows it. He knows already that the life of the outlaw is coming to an end, and he knows that he is a bad man, and for that he knows he will die a violent death, but he cares not to embrace life. Though it is through quests like Arcadia for Amateurs that he sees beauty in the world, irregardless to his circumstances, irregardless to his attitudes. These sorts of quests inform further the emotional development of Arthur Morgan as he ventures to redeem himself-- the sidequests really *make* the story for me, in that way. I can't say the same for Ghost. Jin's development is good in my opinion, and yet it doesn't surpass that in any significant way, unfortunately. It doesn't feel as though the game has dived deep into what the progressive, anti-traditionalist nature of The Ghost means for Jin. While he laments that it is a way of utilitarianism, in that he murders and backstabs in the face of an imperialistic enemy not unlike a force of nature, it feels one-note, his sorrows. And the sidequests don't particularly help. On the story's subtlety: There's something wrong with how the writing, as in the physical words written for the script of the game for the actors to act out, presents itself. A part of it feels far too unsubtle, like it doesn't trust the audience to infer a level of character in what characters might be saying. Masako Adachi's questline comes to mind, particularly. Her story is deeply tragic, the massacre of her entire family leaving only *her*, and its perpetrator being her sister is even more despairing. But it feels off. One-note. Like it doesn't wish to spend much time festering in the deeper implications of Masako Adachi's vengeance, the deeper thoughts she feels in regards to this vengeance. In comparison to what is the most depthy and delved-into story in the game, Jin Sakai and Lord Shimura, and the conflict therein between beliefs, Masako Adachi's story and many others feel unvisited. It's unfortunate. I do feel like I saw a path in which these questlines could at least, like I mentioned before, further inform Jin's delve into the way of The Ghost. I saw glimpses of it in Sensei Ishikawa's quest and Masako Adachi's too. But it was never fully realized. And I wish it was. -- All in all, Im liking Ghost of Tsushima. But with its glaring problems, I am looking more forward to finishing the main story's content than much else. I've unlocked a lot, and I plan to play the DLC too, except I do feel burnt out. Mind you, I have nearly 1000 hours into Elden Ring through more than 15 different playthroughs. This shouldn't be *special* by any means but it should highlight that I like to give games chances. Explore all that they have. All that they offer, as games. Unfortunately, what Ghost offered was a little too off-balance-- favoring the fun and weightiness I found in the combat, and the beauty of the artstyle of the world. I like the game, I love it even, but it couldn't reach me unfortunately. I wish it could've of course, I enjoyed the premise and continue to. But there's something in games like Elden Ring, Dark Souls 1-3 (yes, even and ESPECIALLY Dark Souls 2), Sekiro, Bloodborne, Red dead 1 and 2, that Ghost does not do.

Combat is elegant but that’s all about it. Making the deflecting skill based doesn’t work when you can’t animate the enemies properly, a Batman style not execution based parry would save this game’s combat. Shadow of Mordor has done everything better this game tried to do.
