Ghost of Tsushima - Why Jin Sakai Deserves a Sequel

Ghost of Tsushima has now been out for nearly 4 years and with the sequel rumored to be announced soon, I'm really hoping Jin Sakai will once again be the protagonist. His story has too much potential to be continued just to only be abandoned after one game...

Im fairly positive the second game will be called ghost of Tsushima: Kamikaze. Takes place during 2nd mongol invasion and this time extends to the mainland however it is Jin who sets them back and earns the title of Kamikaze(Divine wind)

Divine wind fits the game because of well... how the wind and storm affects stealth in the game, but I don't think it works well for sequels. The Ghost Trilogy or Saga would be much better for Marketing and the overall mission statement for the franchise. After all, Jin is The Ghost.

I agree with the Trilogy part. Because we literally have Batman in Arkham Games and Ezio in Assassins Creed games whose character built upon with each game and made them Legendary at the end of the trilogy. Jin as a character surely has what it takes to be one.

The main things are the Mongol invasion and invasion of China when it comes to non civil war type combat. Wouldn't want to see 2 games with the same guys as antagonists

The Mongols dominated because of the invention of the Stirrup, it allowed their mounted archers to develop essentially the first ever form of Manoevre Warfare using ranged weapons. This is the one thing the game ignored entirely about the Mongols, and if they are the antagonists of the next game , this would be how you change it up and keep it fresh, and keep the Mongols for the sake of continuity

I’m just playing devils advocate here but in some ways the games identity is more bound the setting of Tsushima then it is to Jin, the iconic art direction , the real world impact it had on the modern island , and of course the fact Tsushima suffered two invasions in real history; it will be interesting to see what the IP let’s go of (either Ghost’ or Tsushima ‘ ) ; or if it finds a way to let go of/ or keep both

A fair point, although If I'm not mistaken the second invasion was about 7 years after the first one? I thought Sucker Punch may want to take up a different location, so that it's not mostly the same open world that probably wouldn't look too different after only 7 years. If set somewhere else they could have more urbanization, cities, etc... Or if they do choose to set it during the second invasion it could still feature Jin as the Ghost. But I feel like that may result in a repetitive storyline, fending off the island from invaders yet again.

@@masterassassin791 Yeah I’m not arguing it’s ideal, I just think it’s an interesting dilemma regarding the identity of the IP. Either Jin or Tsushima’s story could continue but neither are really necessary, there’s also the legends mode /mythic tales leaving a super -natural route open. My own opinion is that this is an IP that could easily have a ‘spiritual successor ‘. A game with a completely different context inspired by the general art & gameplay without being a sequel, but from a business stand point that’s just unlikely given how well recognised the original game is . I think they will either do Jin in Japan, or a new character 7 years later in Tsushima . Jin in Tsushima again would be safe but definitely risk creative burn out

Let's look at the aspect of Jin Sakai being a playable MK1 character. For L2 it can be used as a button to change stances for his swordplay. As for DB2 it can be a smoke bomb being used, and DF1 can be used for Kunais. Ex moves for DB2 can be used for toxic smoke, and Ex DF1 can throw 3 Kunais. As for hunting bow it can be BF3 and explosive arrow can be the Ex BF3. As for the kicks it can be for all 4 stances. This character may or may not be as popular but he's fictional and M rated which qualifies for Mortal Kombat.

I think they could still call it Ghost of Tsushima 2 no matter where it takes place. No matter what, he’ll always be the ghost *from* Tsushima. And that title is probably registered trademark so there’s brand recognition marketing stuff to think about I guess. The Mongol invasion of Tsushima in the game is loosely based on historical events, the first invasion was 1274, the second was 1281 and they landed at both Tsushima and Iki once more, this time double the soldiers they split forces and also attempted to invade Nagato and Hakata but were driven away and had to retreat back to Iki. Just 7 years after the initial invasion of Tsushima Jin Sakai would once again be forced to defend both Tsushima and Iki and possibly the other 2 islands in fictional theory of how the sequel may play out but Tsushima and Iki will very much still be a large part of the second game. Jin is almost certainly still the protagonist at the point of the second invasion.

I disagree that Lord Shimura would have no place in the sequel if he's still alive. Even if the Shogun gave up on the possibility of Shimura hunting down his nephew, if Shimura is still alive he'd likely be dead set on killing Jin Sakai, as his honor was damaged by his nephew betraying their ideals, and then Jin refusing to kill him, and we all know how much Shimiura cares about his honor. I think there's some interesting storytelling possibilities that could be brought from that.

Sucker Punch may have not said which ending is canon, however there is some in-game dialog that suggests that Killing Lord Shimura is the canon ending. If you decided to save him, some NPC's would say to Jin that they are sorry for his Uncle's death. After you picked saving him. Same goes for Killing him, they will say the same thing, that they are sorry for his loss.

I think Jin's Uncle Lord Shimura will commit 'Seppuku' (honorable act of killing himself after Jin spares him - which is dishonorable) So, mostly, in the event of a sequel, I don't think Lord Shimura will play any role.

Firstly, I'd say that the second game absolutely have to cover the second Mongol invasion. Only this time, the Mongols invade with such overwhelming force that Jin simply has to escape and retreat to the mainland. This would be a great tutorial level where Jin demonstrates the height of his abilities and tools before being forced to retreat and losing most of his arsenal. Unfortunately, although Jin should make it to mainland Japan, exploring Kyoto shouldn't be a part of the game, since the Mongols historically never made it that far. I'd say Fukuoka and the area surrounding Hakata Bay should be new enough to satisfy the sequel expansion itch. Secondly is the overall arc of the second game. With Jin's abilities, resourcefulness and cunning, he is undoubtedly a dangerous man. However, he is just one man. So this time, Jin has to recruit other citizens to join him in his Ghost-shinobi tactics. That should be the main bulk of the game, recruiting and training new Ghosts to retake Tsushima. Thirdly is Jin's character arc and relationships. Personally, I don't think any of the older companions of Jin Sakai should live long enough to see the second invasion of Tsushima. Lady Masako definitely has nothing to live for and will pass away during the seven years. Same for Lord Shimura should Jin spare him. Sensei Ishikawa, while not as old, would have lost his edge as a warrior during the time skip. That only leaves Yuna, Norio, Kenji... and Tomoe. For me, Tomoe has not done enough during the final mission to earn redemption. But you know what would? If Tomoe took her Sensei's teachings and help retake Tsushima with them. Lastly is Jin's own character arc. All the Tales of Jin's companions were warnings on what could happen if Jin allows the Ghost to take over his life, especially Norio's. However, knowing is one thing, doing is another. The entirety of Jin's personal arc should be finding balance between himself and the Ghost, kinda like how Bruce Wayne struggles to find himself within Batman. Only in Jin's case, he should reach a definitive conclusion since the Mongols will never try again after that. As for Jin's ending, it will never be a completely happy ending, since classical samurai films hardly ends happily, but I do wish that he gets a bittersweet ending with a slight weightage towards sweet since Jin would have definitely earned his rest after thwarting a second Mongol invasion.

I’d like to see Jin and Yuna have a romance story although I don’t think it would be essential. They have such great chemistry already so I think people would be on board with it. I think regardless of what ending you chose Lord Shimura dies because if he wasn’t able to kill Jin and was spared the Shogun would probably execute him or he might kill himself since he has nothing left in his life. I’d like to see Jin deal with the consequences of his decision to be the Ghost. He should be hunted by the samurai under the Shoguns orders. Jin could also found or help found the Shinobi since the Ghost is similar to how the Shinobi operate. He could mentor someone but still have him be the main protagonist. If there’s a significant enough time jump the person he’s mentoring could even be his son/daughter. The main conflict for Jin could be over being scared if he will fail his son/daughter in the same way Shimura failed him along with being scared off becoming as ruthless and cold as his father Kazumasa. People in the mainland could also be scared of Jin which could add a further burden to his character and part of his arc could be realising he doesn’t need the peoples approval to be the Ghost he just needs his own. I hope Jin doesn’t die at all in the games. Anything’s possible with how The Last Of Us 2 went but I think Sucker Punch are smart enough to realise it’s not a good idea to kill off Jin. I hope we get an announcement for a sequel soon and I will probably love it as much as the original. Jin Sakai Forever ❤️

What I would love in the GOT sequel: 1. Flesh out the Jin & Yuna romance. The first game had no room for it (understandably) but the second game SHOULD explore it 2. Forget mongols, clash Jin against the corrupt shoguns. That way, we'll also get a bit more of lord Shimura 3. Someone here mentioned Jin becoming the first ninja, that'll be damn interesting too :)

There was a 2nd invasion that even reached beyond Tsushima, hitting the mainland Japan. So it would be understandable if they changed the title as Jin possible goes there. Sucker Punch was heavy on historical accuracy in the first game except for the Bushido and Ghost part but it can still work for the next installment.

I have this fever dream that in the sequel they will lean heavily into the "First Shinobi" narrative that gamers collectively adopted for this character. As people of Tsushima support his way of fighting mongols many join him and the sequel starts out with Jin having a hidden base where he trains the first generation of shinobi warriors in preparation for the second mongol invasion, as he knows he cannot depend on samurai way of fighting. Kind of like in Dragon Age (I don't remember which part, 1 or 2) You have Your own base and troops / allies that You can upgrade and develop that then have an impact on the gameplay (even a little bit). Him still being a solo badass but having his own Shinobi dojo would be really cool and play well into the ninja power fantasy I think :D One can dream.

I hope the dreadful modern urge to "update" or "change for a modern audience" is resisted and that we can just get more on Jin's story. It ain't broke, so don't fix it. I'm not interested in the supporting characters taking the main stage (a firm "NO!" to the sequel focusing on Yuna) or seeing James Bond, Batman or whoever dead and a "new generation" taking over - it's always, ALWAYS a failure; both financially and creatively. My idea for the sequel: with his home safe, Jin travels to the mainland to further deter the mongol Invasion. While he’s there, his legend spreads and people flock to his cause. Jin realizes he can’t face the entire mongol empire on his own, as the force invading the mainland dwarfs the one that took Tsushima. So Jin begins to recruit and train the best people empathetic to his cause and starts a group of warrior ninjas called “the ghosts” dedicated to protecting the innocent people of Japan.

I saw a poll of who is the better protagonist Arthur Morgan, Jin Sakai, or Kratos. Others mentioned Ezio and I feel Commander Sheppard belongs there as well. I didnt play all Assassins Creed Games. But Jin is the one guy who gave up everything to defeat the Mongols and save his people. Gave his life and reputation. Meanwhile knowing hed be branded as a traitor.

My thoughts for a trilogy are… The second game would focus more on the legend of the ghost and how his story spread. And the third would focus on either the Ghost’s legacy or him passing the way and title of the Ghost onto a student, maybe a small dlc where we play as that student later.

Question do guys think since this is a sucker punch game. Do you think it be cool if Jin was the first potential conduit. Would explain his incredible physical abilities. For those who aren't familiar with Infamous lore. Potential conduits are people who have the conduit gene but do not have their dormant powers activate. Potential conduits however are more physical better than normal humans. Specifically when it comes to durability, pain tolerance and healing. Which all match with Jin. Jin "resolved" in a game for example.

The problem with reusing the same main character is, what happens to all his skills and kit? Does he have them to start with, or does he have to lean them all again (or learn new ones)? I just finished the main storyline on PC, and Jin almost has too many options for killing his foes, but I'd feel robbed if I had to learn them all again, yet a big part of the game is getting those skills. Better, if there's to be a sequel, to have his son (with Yuna?) or nephew take over the role of Ghost, or maybe his daughter?

I dont think it would be too bad if we took on the perspective of someone other than Jin. Maybe a peasant who joins the Ghost army at the end of the game before you fight Shimura, they work their way up the rebel chain until they meet the Ghost himself who can ejther approve or disapprove of your methods depending on story. Maybe even an evil ending where you fight Jin for the title of the Ghost

I don’t think so. He only just became the ghost. There’s 0 reason to have a different protagonist as Jins journey just started. Maybe after 1 or 2 more games with Jin, what you say should happen.

@azr_Ħ Tbh, where else can Jins' story go that we haven't already explored? Especially with the iki expansion, his family drama is practically over, his clan is disbanded, and depending on your playthrough, all his family members/loyal servants are dead (Yuriko and Shimura). Aside from what his mother would look like, we have all the answers we could want about Jin in his own story. Passing down the mantle (by force or choice) is something a game could be built off of without treading old ground or at least too much of it.

Personally Jins story has been told like you said, but the Ghosts story is wide open. How will Jin control this legend of the ghost? Norio literally burned and tortured Mongols and said “it’s what the Ghost would do” even though Jin hasn’t done anything like that, one of many issues. A sequel is needed to explore the Ghost, and then a passing of the torch would work.

@azr_Ħ I do like the legend getting out of control acpect of the game. If they had to extend jins' story, i want to take control of some of the ex companions and hear stories about Jin (true or false) from others perspective as you travel from town to town, I loved that when the people first realized Jin was the legend they were all, "You're the Ghost? But you're not 10 feet tall, " and I want to hear what other exaggerated stories are being told. Maybe then meet up with Jin halfway through the story who's being chased by the Shogun, and Jin refuses to kill a samurai. Though after that, im not sure where the story would go, like hitting a wall.

It would be cool if he settles down some place and started a family of his own and then the shogun finds out and orders men to kill him and his family, so Jin becomes the ghost again

Ultimately a sequel would garner little except for widespread critical acclaim and FAT long boi stacks of money. It's hard to imagine why any developer would be interested in either of these, they're a business and as a business their main priority is stagnation, bankruptcy and laughing stock status. A successful sequel would not be conducive to these principles.

I wish the sequel is about Jin rebuilding the samurai and their code and have the philosophy of his father who was brutal and did whatever it took to save people. It would make Jin a samurai again and personally I just want a game were you can be a samurai without assassinations and stealth. NOT saying that Jin should kill his Ghost Persona btw

I feel like a good way to continue the franchise is having Jin maybe go too far in the sequel and in the third game they could work on his redemption and how the symbol of the ghost out grows him leading to the potential of other games if the studio wanted it
