I never could finish this movie. That opening scene set the bar WAY too high, and the next half hour or so was such a drag by comparison that I couldn't sit through it.

It really is the high point. Everything else was so derivative and ho hum. I kept waiting for it to crank it back up but nope. Studio interference strikes again, and the end product is a muddled mess.

This is really the issue with alot of movies at this time, 13 ghosts, this, the house on haunted hill has so epicly awesome scary opening moments....and then screw up the rest of the movie. Especially house on haunted hill, the operation scene with the camera, is probably one of the best moments, and then right after that.
@user-zh4vo1kw1z4 жыл бұрын
@@wolfwing1 well, they're all from the same studio. It was a relatively small one and, though the script is lacking sometimes, it's kinda impressive what they managed to deliver: not all good, but enjoyable. And kinda consistent in genre, style and structure, so you know what you're getting into. Kinda like criticising Marvel movies for most of them being clones of one another.

So, fun fact. About a year ago, I had a botched tonsillectomy that caused me to lose 40 pounds worth of weight from dehydration and constant bleeding and vomiting. Before one of my many surgeries to fix it, while I lay dazed and groggy in my hospital bed, this movie came on. My dad began hyping it up as one of the best horror movies ever. He constantly talked about it, and was so excited that I finally would get to see it. Somehow, despite the constant bleeding, and twitching, and massive headaches, I was finally able to get a good nights sleep, cause this movie was soooo terrible, that I feel asleep halfway through.

My understanding of why the ghosts helped him is that, 1. Once his quota is filled, they get to move on, and 2. He can somewhat control marked/sinner ghosts. That explains why little girl was able to do her own thing, but other than boozing the alcoholic, the captain was dishing useful backstory and Intel.

7:40 They’re all his prisoners, but only some help him. Some try to help Epps and her friends. That’s why the Captain talks to Aquarium guy. That and plot advancement/Captain-sposition. I thought this movie was a bit better when you watch it a second time. You can see things from another point of view, like how much Jack is pretending like he’s got no clue what’s going on. Also, if you really want to be scared, go to FanFiction.Net. There are plenty of fans who ship (pun intended) Jack and Maureen.

*Very nice review! To be honest with you, I do like this movie and I think the cast did a good job. But you are right: if Jack killed the previous Antonia Graza crew, why did the ghosts of the crew members helped him kill other people? Jack said himself that once the souls are "marked", he can't bring them to life again so technically those ghosts wouldn't have any benefits by killing others - just saying.*

But "13 Ghosts" was cool , at least when it came out and I watched it , about 20 years ago or so ....I really liked it. In John Carpenters The Thing we never get the ' sitting around the break room introducing the characters and their quirks scene'. And it's so much better that way! Regardless of the flaws, I've always loved this movie. The main issues that have always bugged me are: 1) Why was the Captain hit so high up w/ Kate untouched when the cable was abdomen height? 2) If Ferryman's "Management" "would not be happy" if he didn't deliver his souls (thus implying he's screwed if he screws up...) then why do we see him starting all over again after he lost ALL of his souls??
