Another Fun Fact: In the middle of the film's initial release, to keep interest going, Ivan Reitman ran a trailer that was basically the commercial the Ghostbusters used in the movie, but the 555 number was replaced with a 1-800 number, allowing people to actually call in. Callers got a recorded message of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd saying something to the effect of "Hi. We're out catching ghosts right now." They got 1,000 calls per hour, 24 hours a day, for several weeks.

If you called that number, plainly shown on any in-game Vault-Tec advertisement, you got an automated message thanking you for calling Vault-Tec and informing you that all operators are busy (because they all perished in nuclear flames) and someone will be with you in (glitches out and dies due to 200+ years of postapocalyptic neglect.)

Not only is this movie a timeless comedic classic, but it taught us all four very important life lessons: 1. Don't cross the streams. 2. When someone asks if you're a god , you say YES! 3. Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson nail these roles. 4. If there's something strange, in your neighborhood, who you ganna call? GHOSTBUSTERS!

To answer who those 4 ghost examples were before they died: Slimer: accidental manifestation of the concept of gluttony by gozer cultist in the Sedgwick. Librarian: Elenor Twitty, head librarian in the early 1900s. Died 1908(?) by the hands of a serial killer known as “The Collector”. Terror Dogs: never died. They’re just like that. Another Fun Fact: After Harold Ramis died on February 24, 2014, fans of the movie paid tribute to him by visiting the New York City firehouse used in the exterior shots and created a makeshift memorial featuring Nestles Crunch Bars (in reference to Venkman giving Spengler a candy bar), Twinkies (in reference to Spengler using the Twinkie to describe the ghost problem in New York City), and collections of spores, molds and fungi.

In the Justice League animated series, there was a two-parter about a regular guy named John Dee who wanted respect and power, and suddenly gets everything he could ever want and more when an accident gives him Freddy Kreuger like dream powers, turning him into Doctor Destiny. He haunts the nightmares of the Justice League and forces them to face their greatest fears before he's finally taken down by Batman, and in Justice League Unlimited's final season he's given the honor of being one of many background villains that make up the Legion of Doom The reason I bring this up is that the character of John Dee/Doctor Destiny, an average Joe one minute and a Skeletor-Fred Kreuger hodgepodge the next, was voiced by William Atherton. My favorite bit of trivia is when Ivan Reitman had gone to a theater that was playing Ghostbusters and when Stay Puft was approaching, he got genuinely nervous about the audiences reaction. But, the moment it walked out from behind the building, the audience cheered! In that moment, Ivan thought to himself, "This is going to be a great movie!"

Eddie Murphy was originally supposed to play the role of Winston. Dan Aykroyd, while filming Trading Places, approached Eddie to try out the role but he turned it down. I keep looing back to these old scenes with Ernie Hudson and though to myself "How would Eddie's contribution to the scene work out?" JANINE: Do you believe in UFOs, astroprojections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full transmediums, the Loch Ness Monster, and the theory of Atlantis? WINSTON (played by Eddie Murphy): Well. If there's a steady paycheck involved, I'll believe in the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and Santa Claus. Heh-heh. I mean I would love to find Santa and ask him "What happen to my Rock-em Sock-em Robots I asked for when I was 8?"

That and the given source for his investigation was “a lot of wild stories” about, for instance, noxious, possibly hazardous waste chemicals in the basement; he never once even indicates that he knows about the proton packs. In the mayors office, he asserts it’s a chemically induced illusion with a “fake, electronic light show” which could be him explaining the ghosts moreso than the proton streams. But even then, that means he doesn’t have any notion of “nuclear guns” (as TV Guide calls them) to even invite the N.R.C. along. For that matter, would the E.P.A. even be involved in anything that wasn’t emissions based or storage based that could risk getting out into the emvironment? I also find his C&D order(s) a little unbelievable given no due process was carried out and he himself admits it’s only stories he was working on and never got any further than the initial meeting.

One thing not mentioned is that even though it's very much a subtle capitalism/entrepreneur movie. First they get rejected in academia, so they decide to go into business. They get Ray to take out a loan and make the ultimate financial risk in order to invest in an idea that NO ONE has thought up of at this point in time. Due to the increased demand, they run a successful business and make money to hire more people and expand. Then, the federal government comes in portrayed as incompetent and smarmy, thinking they know how to handle this only for it to blow up in their faces, and it's only the individuals of this small business that can stop the apocalypse caused by the federal government.

Something I like about this movie is that a world destroying god is defeated by 4 blue collar guys who use the power of science to defy prophesy. There's no "chosen one," no magical maguffin, just a supernatural entity defeated by a device that was designed to combat entities like that. The newest movie, Frozen Empire, ALMOST did that too. They found out that the ghost in that movie was weak to brass so Egon's granddaughter figured out they could make the proton blasters work on it by coating the accelerator in brass...BUT then they fucked it up by having that guy who could use magical firebending bullshit powers, basically contradicting what made this whole thing so cool.

Many people believe the 1937 disney cartoon 'Lonesome Ghosts' was the inspiration for Ghostbusters. Also, the phrase "I ain't scared of no ghost" occurs in this cartoon, which may have inspired the Ghostbusters theme song written by Ray Parker Jr. Disney made a D-TV of the song to footage from the cartoon for their Halloween special DTV Monster Hits.

What makes this movie so great is the fact that EVERY joke pulls double-duty. Every quip and gag is either a story beat or a character moment, meaning that anyone who finds this movie completely unfunny will still be able to enjoy it. Key to writing a comedy story: assume every joke isn't funny so that it still has something to offer.

Another Fun Fact: When Janine is interviewing Winston for the job, the scene originally began with Winston listing his qualifications. According to Ivan Reitman in the DVD commentary, Winston was an Army veteran, a former paramedic, and a construction worker. Janine's questioning was considered a funnier opening. In The Brooklyn Triangle, the Ghostbusters fight spirits on a construction site run by Winston's father, who chides Winston for quitting the construction business to become a Ghostbuster.

Fun Fact: Ernie Hudson was originally going to appear much earlier in the film. As early as the hotel scene. With him even originally having the line 'He smiled me'. However, for one reason or another his character was pushed later into the movie and some of his lines would be given to the other actors. It's been a while, but I believe it was just to give Harold, Dan, and Bill more attention as the three of them were bigger stars. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ernie has done interviews where he has said it was the studio's decision to bring himself in "later." He also directly and indirectly blames potential racism from studio execs and "Hollywood" keeping him from going in later in the movie, as well as keeping him out of promotional posters and promotional work for the movie.
