They’re still largely based in 1930’s technology save the power drive but so is a KitchenAid stand mixer and both will last a lifetime. There was a time when you purchased a refrigerator it was expected to last most of your life too. I’ve never needed a repair on my Kirby and it was delivered to us June 03, 1973. Just maintenance part being belts, brushrolls and cord. Between that and my Electrolux Silverado I really never needed to buy other vacuums. I’ve only purchased newer machines for better filtration and convenience. Happy that I have though. They are anvil heavy.

Quoted from the Kirby sales book, problem is, I could buy the cheapest vacuum at Walmart every year for 30 years and it still would cost less than what the MSRP on one of these, the website has it priced similar to a used car, that being said generally a mid priced vacuum would last five to seven years, costing even less than what this would be new by comparison.

I have the Diamond Edition and I love it. However, there have been a few times where I wish I had at least one machine with on-board tools. I don't find them confusing, but they aren't convenient if you are doing a lot of vacuuming in a short amount of time. I tend to use my 1959 Kirby (model 519) more than anything, because I have mostly large area rugs and hard flooring. It is a lot lighter and easier to use, and I can lift it easily onto my couches and love seats. I have completely rebuilt and upgraded mine to using HEPA filtration by using a Heritage 2 mini emtor, fill tube and HEPA disposable bags. I have had it since I was twelve-years-old, and I am sure I will pass it down to my children and so on.

It's not as bad of a machine as this guy is making out. It really is a good machine in my honest opinion. Though true it does have some leak issues, learn how to work on your own stuff. Someone that is minimally mechanically inclined can figure out how to use and repair that unit. Most vacuums you buy today in the store that are made 100% out of plastic cannot be repaired. And if you break something on the newer vacuums that are all made out of plastic, you're better off throwing it away and buying another one.
@PerformanceReviews3 жыл бұрын
The core mechanical parts of this machine are made out of plastic. There are plenty of machines you can buy for significantly less money new that are designed to last 20 plus years. I believe what you're referring to are some of the disposable machines that have come in favor in some of the box stores. There is nothing said that it was a bad unit just very much behind in technology and overpriced. But an excellent deal on the used market.

Canister vacuums: Zero G, Miele C3, Sebo E3 Uprights: Sebo Felix, Miele U1 Having tried many vacuums, the Zero G is the chad of the group in my opinion and is my daily driver. Kirbys are perhaps the worst vacuum design available in the 2020s. Even battery stick vacuums perform better, which is unheard of when it comes to mains powered vacuums versus battery powered ones.

These were the bane of my existence as a kid. 😂 Everyone in my family who had carpet, got a visit from the Kirby salesman. I remember coming home with Dad from “take your kid to work day” in 2006 only to be greeted by a Kirby Salesman team of two people demonstrating the Ultimate G Diamond Edition machine to my poor mom. She had already signed off on it after being “wowed” by the demo. (We came home just after they finished the carpet cleaning demo) Hiking this thing up the stairs as a kid was a chore. I wasn’t impressed with how long the belts lasted, how the hose kinked in stair/canister mode, and having to polish the aluminum every other year to keep it from looking like a weathered t*rd. The transmission, while sounding annoying, was the only savior of using this machine. After the foot switch broke on one side, I bought a 1927 Hoover model 700 off Craigslist and used it whenever it was my turn to vacuum that week before moving to an all tile house 2 yrs later. Kirby wasn’t all bad, they had great parts inventory, great repair ability, durablity and interchangeability. However there’s better, lighter options from the Euro side of the world, now available here in the states. I mostly recommend Henry’s and Sebos these days. Never looked back, but I still love my vintage USA made machines even if they aren’t up to par with modern filtration standards.

In my opinion the kirby classics like the omega to the legend ll are better then the G series. They're more easier to work on and less to go wrong with them and not as bulky as the g series. Tho the problem with them they're hard to push since it doesn't have tech drive and the usual kirby complaints of being heavy, and hard to use but I like them better then the g series. Kirby really need to redesign they're machines they're really starting to show they're age no matter how much they change the look of it or they add an extra feature its still looks 30 years old. They can keep the metal parts and direct air system but they can atleast make a fresh design then reuse a 30 year old design that is outdated in today's world.

I tend to lean more towards the older Kirbys, too. In my opinion, I believe the Heritage 2-Legend 2 series was probably the best well-rounded of them all. I’m curious to see you do this same review, but against an older model Kirby, say a classic iii - heritage, or an even older model such as the 515 (my daily). The 515 still works great, is smaller, lighter, and the nozzle is smaller and more rounded than the G series, yes the same issues will exist as far as suction, but that model truly is all metal as the motor is the exposed vacuum and the joints are metal to metal (except the bag emptor does still have a gasket), filtration is non existent with the 515 though. The heritage model I think is still predominantly metal but had switched to a non metal blade, and you can use hepa bags in that model. As far as the shampooer, I partially agree with you, except, it could be mentioned, the Kirby shampoo brush does an exceptional job of scrubbing the carpet. I always use my Kirby for a good wash/scrub but then also go back over with a rinse and extractor machine. You mentioned buying used which is absolutely the only way to go, so, may be worth advising people who aren’t aware that the even older model Kirby’s might be a good or better option and will still last a lifetime and are easy to repair.

Neither have *any* issues, the g3 was from a private seller, and the g3 was at a goodwill. I truly believe the older kirbys, before the g series, (70's-80's) is where they really shined. I don't think the newer and new machines are very good. I don't like using kirbys with the accessories very often. Sentrias and Avalirs aren't that great IMHO. I have three old Hoovers, all with no problems. 2 being convertible models, and one being a decade 80. They all came from goodwill for less than $15 each. I tell you what, I prefer canisters though. Why have an upright, if it needs to be converted to something else. This is why my main machines are all *OLD* Electroluxes. 🤣 I am the salesman in the picture at the beginning of the video. Door to door is one of the oldest form of sales in the world and there is nothing wrong with it. Jim Kirby wanted buying a kirby to be an experience, not another boring purchase at a store. Kirbys are the best thing on the market for what they do. The new one is better than the old but not by a lot. I am always honest with people about that. I hate that some people have a bad experience. I am friends with many of the people I have sold to, including the guy in the photo. Unfortunately, there are many kirby guys that are shady... I hate that because it makes those of us who genuinely enjoy helping people get a clean home look bad. Kirby will give anyone without a felony record an opportunity and like all jobs, there are bad apples. Kirby tries to get rid of them as quickly as possible. But all in all, I don't really appreciate being put in the video under negative context but I did learn some stuff with this so I enjoyed that part.

We have tests that have been done millions of times and come up with the same result every time. Your shop vac will NEVER get all the dirt out of the floor. I can tell you from years of experience in the industry that It's impossible. There are attachments to clean things around the home but a kirby is the only system in the world that will remove 100% of the dirt from a carpet AND its the world's only mattress cleaner to get dead skin out of your mattress. Plus they last forever and have a life time warranty. No one believes it until they see the tests done first hand and that's okay. We don't expect you to believe or understand it until you see it. That's why the test exist. To prove without any shadow of a doubt that your system doesn't work for cleaning carpets anyway.

You and your review of the Kirby is OBVIOUSLY BIAS!!! You do not like Kirby's for whatever reason and your review shows that, at least to me. Kirby's are extremely good machines and I have owned 4 or them over the last 30 years. They ONLY reason I have switched to a Riccar is that Kirby's are dirty air motors (the dirt/debris goes through the impellers of the motor) and the Riccar's are a clean air system (the dirt/debris gets to the bag before the motor or impellers. BOTH are made in AMERICA, hence, better than anything else made anywhere else (especially CHINA). I now own an older gen 4 Kirby and an brand new Riccar R40P .6 ... I will NEVER buy any product that is made in China ever again, if there is an alternative. I will spend TWICE the money to BUY AMERICAN if I have the choice. Its an old fashioned vacuum for people who like to take their time and futz around with their machine. Fun if you are into it, a bitch if you aren’t. Edit: Yes I am a college student looking for a decent vacuum and I was looking at kirbys about half an hour before watching your video!

I love Kirby’s, but I do also see his points. They are very old fashioned and very much of the last century. They don’t clean as well as Kirby say, but they still do decently well on carpet. The hose can be useful, but don’t have enough power to make real good use of it. And if you want a vacuum that lasts, this is it. Again, they do decently well on carpet, but the hose is so fiddly you almost don’t want to use it.

Are the HEPA filters effective, I heard it lowers the vacuum suction, can we hack the increased power button to use with a HEPA filter bag if we are careful not to over heat the the motor. I guess that's an unmeasured risk, with no publisher results, because who wants to exposure to added risk, and a DIY content producer could risk getting in trouble with "The Channel" for suggesting to try taking a risk at home.
@PerformanceReviews4 жыл бұрын
The bags themselves are effective. Direct air machines leak too much dirt just in their mechanical design. Video showing that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYfSoaCPdt6amdE Kirby's getting stuck on the "higher speed" are well documented. Not only is this bad for the motor. But this has a tendency to rip up the brush roller and fan ,but other parts of the chassis.

I will try to be brief. LOL. I am no vacuum expert, but my younger sister has a Miele canister which I have used and I liked it quite a bit. So I was looking for an upright, and bought a used but virtually new Miele upright I found on Craigslist at a bargain price. I like it quite a bit. So what brought me to watching this video? Well, my older sister has been living with our mom but she moved out. I don't know why, but this house has a Kirby vacuum. I am a bicycle technician or 40+ years, so I kinda have a sense about how things go together and work. This Kirby is...what a piece of...okay, I have read comments here and there from people who love their Kirby. Is the Kirby build like a tank? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But like a old car, it may run forever, but the performance is sorely lacking compared to a modern car. That how I feel about the Kirby. Also, the design with regards to ergonomics and ease of use is also terrible. I didn't have a manual, and it took me at least 10 minutes just to figure out how to remove and replace the brush roller assembly just so I could use the crummy attachments. There is not a single thing I like about the Kirby. I came to this video to learn if I am off my rocker. Good to know I am not.

A Miele upright is 22.? Lbs., a Kirby is 23.? but is self-propelled. So, too heavy, really? Btw, you’re way too young to sound out of breath all the time like that. Do some cardio.

We had/have a Kirby Diamond for years and it currently sits in the garage with another one we got for spare parts; every single issue and more is being brought up and that's why I just can't stand Kirby. Alright machine, but holy crepe that maintanence and everything else that comes with a Kirby.

So u might be getting the dirt out of your carpets... but at the same time you're coating your house with carbon dust....It blows my mind that they at least can't put a carbon filter on it... I mean, look how black HEPA filters get from carbon dust... this kinda bums me out because I was thinking about getting one

I just had a salesmen here. Th vacuum is now propelled and easy to push. It also picked up a ton of dirt ... so I was tempted. Salesmen was way easy going not pushy. The carpet cleaner was lame though and the tools were still same old inconvenient hype/crap. We bought our fire 2000. I think we are moving in to another brand after watching this .

Had a Kirby salesperson come my door and was told we won a free carpet cleaning, my wife let the person in and he wouldn’t leave. I got home and told him I wasn’t buying anything and he needed to leave. I was not going to pay $2700 for a Kirby, he saw our Dyson and said it would only last 2 years as he left. I paid $169 for my Dyson and 12 years later it still runs great. Kirbys are on my personal life long do not buy list due to the sales tactics

I’ll give my 2 cents on Kirbys for whoever cares. The door-to-door sales method. Ditch it. Be done with it. There’s almost nothing sold like that anymore. Sell them in brick and mortar stores at at actually decent price. A lot for the salesmen are shady. They are good at what they do. They are excellent sweepers. Just as long as you don’t need to use the hose very often. There’s a lot of people who swear by Kirby. As you said they are very repairable. I’m mechanically inept however I can do quite a bit as far as fixing them. KZbin is also a good tool. The shampooer in my opinion is useless. If you actually need to deep clean your carpets, get an actual carpet cleaner. I think the prettiest Kirby is the Generation 3. It’s just so nostalgic and stuck in its time in the early 1990s. I don’t like the newer machines are as pretty as the G3. I think the last truly pretty Kirby is the Ultimate G. I have 2 Kirbys (Ultimate G and Sentria I) I got both of them used. I think in total I put $220 to get both of them cleaned up and looking nice. If you want one, get used. There’s a lot of people who genuinely take care of them and keep them nice. I hardly ever recommend people buy used vacuums unless it’s a Kirby. I call them the Apple of the vacuum industry. Certainly not the best. However they have a lot of dedicated people who love them and they have a cult following behind them especially the pre-TechDrive ones.
