You got that right, Rico! I'm from '55, and we heard and saw them all. What a time to grow up, eh?? I mean really, if you go down the list of epic / historic bands and musicians from say, '63 to '73, it's almost hard to believe. R&R was in it's heyday, as you say, from the mid-60's to mid-70's, with Marriot / Humble Pie and the rest right in the middle of it. Everyone during that period was hitting their stride, the likes of which I don't think anyone will ever see or hear again.

It all comes together at about the 18 second mark... No effects, no "auto tune". No Overdub. No backing track. No excessive effects. No jack s#it for anything other than talent. Bang the intro chord, and the whole band comes together in less than two seconds. Tight, on time, amazing!! Effin awesome display of what "being a band" is all about. Used to play this live, followed by Free Ride ands All Right Now. Brought the effin house down in the early 80s'. Tons of spots in the song to stretch out and jam to.

@@Artoconnell I guess you kinda missed my point about the sound of the band "coming together", that's something that can't be faked, or manipulated. Or, at least couldn't have been done at the time that that was recorded. As far as overdrive is concerned, "back in the day" overdrive was simply from the tube pre amp getting an overdriven signal, that was cleanly reproduced by the amp's second stage. Today, as electronics have progressed, digital imitation of an overdrive signal is virtually sonically indistinguishable from a pre-amp solid state amp sound. I've got a Fender mini amp that can accurately mimic many, many different amp and cabinet combinations. The world has ( electronically) moved on. But, in 1972, that sure wasn't the case.

But I couldn't stand the new construct. I've been on the net to long to adapt to a new format. Anyway, between the hours resetting the new configuration and discovering your replies, they came out scrambled. What I was able to decipher between the two was something about opium, the other I couldn't make out. I posted that comment a few months before I applied for I retirement. This may sound cruel, but when I was in the Air Force at times I was given temporary jail duty, watching over the prisoners at night to make sure they didn't commit suicide and such. I wasn't supposed to bring in my tape player, but one of the guys knew me from before and asked if I could sneak in this Humble Pie cassette. I said I would, and the five men in their cells got and danced to this song, singing out the lyrics and laughing at the irony of the song and their present situation. Before 30 days, however, they were all discharged from the Air Force, most of them being sent home afterward. But one was in for assault and battery against his training instructor and faced some years in prison. I ended up giving him the cassette and wishing him luck. I never saw or heard from him again, but I can just imagine that whole cell block dancing and singing to this song. Cheers!

When I was 13, I liked all kinds of music, including classical and show tunes. I had a friend who loved the big band music of the 1940s. He would wear a smoking jacket and walk around his bed listening to Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and the like. After the Beatles, everything changed. Much of Rock became very serious. The younger kids still loved the bubblegum stuff, but older kids loved the new complexity, artistry, and excellence of bands like The Who, etc.

Saw them in '72 at the St. Louis Keil Auditorium Annex unreserved seating on the concrete floor. Best concert I've ever witnessed.

@@TheIoniaboy So sorry that happened to you! If it weren't for Nixon, it might not have been such a long hard road. At least you weren't a rat! 51 days is a long as time to spend all by yourself. Kudos to you!

I was 19 years old in 1976, making boatloads of money as an oil spill recovery specialist, and living in an apartment complex in Pasadena TX. All I had to do was open the windows and blast this song at full volume and I'd stay high for weeks at a time. If you were one of my neighbors, this bud's for you.

Im 43, and i love classic 70s and 80s rock/metal! I wish the 90s would have had such good music! I was the odd one in high school. I liked bands like Humble Pie and Winger.

Speechless n Breathless. So good it is. These guys are simply AWESOME. I know them a Long long long Time ago. They´re just terrific. Steeve Marriott has got a sweet rough voice. And plays a devilish nice guitar. I Love them all. Omar Nacur
