As deplorable as this behavior is, it is global; blatantly displayed in some societies than others. Perhaps it’s because it’s been a chauvinist society until the last few decades. But even as women are learning to be self sufficient and independent, men are learning to grow out of chauvinism. Why should a woman settle? Men are suppose to bring women up. We are not supposed to settle for a man that is low on the totem pole. We are not accepting struggle love.

That's why this is so interesting playing out in Accra or Lagos. 'Suppose to'-suggests certain expectations on ascribed gender roles. Settling infers having attained some status that you are willingly going beneath. All men & women who have amassed career or financial accolades must settle (as many returning diaspora), because they have risen above the pack. No one 'ahead' of them (i.e higher on the totem pole) is a. available nor b. Interested, in whatever you believe you have. The difference is 'Settling' works for most older successful men (who happily get a swarm of beautiful young unemployed financially 'struggling' women), and doesn't work for same smaller sample of older successful women (who can get but may not want, a flotilla of handsome, tall, dark 'struggling' young men). Life has already made the choice, it's merely playing out.

Very interesting conversation. Ivy I relate with your mindset. Once you spoke about Detroit and I once worked there. I have also been to St Catharines as I have family there and the Niagara Falls is amazing. The lady architect said she is s hopeless romantic and that her family does not believe in divorce. How does she reconcile getting married and the husband starts to cheat. She said love evolves so I am curious how she would reconcile that with her beliefs. I guess the real issue here maybe that most men struggle to be monogamous. Personally I feel that if I cannot be monogamous then I should have no expectations for my girlfriend or wife to be either. So it is best to stick to one person for me. One piece of advice is that you should try to include a lady who has never lived abroad. I think the conversation would be much richer.

Hello Muchi T, My names Vanessa, yes i shared i believe in love and come from a family of long standing successful marriages, which does leave me with hope for Love when it finds me. I shared i believe like anything in life, love is also something we work on. Be it, business relationships, friendships or significant other, they all take work. Cheating in my opinion is a choice, and our culture has made it ridiculously too normal yet the same isnt readily embraced should a woman step out on her marriage. Either way its wrong and extremely unhealthy how women are encouraged to be tolerant of cheating. Mistakes are made indeed, but consistently cheating thats unacceptable and not a matter i wish to accept will be my fate one day. Thanks for watching and your comment.

When I last went to visit a few years ago I was very disappointed by the increase in the number of men who want to normalize cheating and all sorts of side relationships. Broken families lead to major trauma which is all too visible here in the US which is why every day people are killed due an abundance of angry people. I have four sisters so my suggestion is never settle on something that fundamental. And as you correctly said the same men who think like that are the most jealous. Talk about hypocrites.

Life in Africa has many advantages over life in the Western world, no doubt. That said, the diasporans who return to Africa are often at an advantage/favoured when it comes to jobs or contracts partly because they have gained their qualifications/training/experience from outside Africa, a lot of this is rooted in colonialism. It's important that we acknowledge this because for many regular Ghanaians (esp. Women) many career opportunities are still hard to come by unless you have connections or even worse you end up being coerced by someone. A 30 year old female trained in Gh as an architect probably wouldn't have the level of contracts that the lady Vanessa has at this stage (it would take far longer for the average Ghanaian). Also, many diasporans talk about how great Ghana is whilst completely ignoring that the majority of citizen do not enjoy the basics of standard living (eg. healthcare, suitable accommodation) or anywhere near the life that diasporans can live in Gh whilst travellingin and out at their convenience (sometimes to utilise more affordable/better health care when they need it). Let's remember the less fortunate (who are still far too many) when we say 'Ghana is lit'.

I think your comment was very sensible whereas a lot of your observations go ignored. The only input I would add is the skillset for diasporas returning is generally greater than of those in the country, and understandably so. One of the most frustrating challenges many foreign investors have is looking for adequately skilled workers. I think one solution to this is to have many more locals become mentees or shadow those diasporas obtaining these positions. The ball has to get rolling on reversing the brain drain somehow.

When I came to America the all white church I used to attend in Dallas, Texas told the children that Africans don't wear clothes and shoes. Before coming to America, I was an accountant in both Ghana and Nigeria so I know fashion. Anytime I go to church the way the children looked at me I sensed there was something going on. One Sunday the pastor told me that the children like me and he wanted me to be with them. Immediately I sat down with them ,they started to bombard me questions like do Africans wear clothes, shoes, live in a house? I asked them who told them Africans live in trees. I had a good discussion with them and told them that their parents are lairs. After the church about 30 children run to their parents and started accusing them that they were not straight to them. They nearly put me into trouble.
