Gianmarco, I've been a deaf fan of your comedy for a few years now and want to thank you for almost always captioning your videos as well as including interpreters at your shows. My only feedback I'd give is to remember that the interpreters are only able to be there because of the deaf people who came to see your show. There's a lot to be said about interpreters in the entertainment world and the blurring of the lines between being an interpreter and being a performer, and no one expects you to know all the nuances about that, but next time, just talk to the deaf people, not the interpreters. Next time I dare you to ask the deaf people what's the weirdest or most embarrassing interpreter story they've had or heard of. You'll be in for a ride! I think it wasn't the venue's idea to have asl interpreters

At its most basic, you speak to the Deaf person and the Deaf person signs to you, with the interpreter to the side in the Deaf person's field of vision doing their job. The interpreter, in this context, is a living accessibility tool, there for work, not for their own pleasure. Similar to other sorts of real-time translators. The biggest difference, tho, is that distracting or engaging directly with the interpreter is more like distracting/engaging with a guide dog. You are preventing the Deaf person from getting the accommodation they need and treating them as less of a person than the interpreter. A lot of people don't know this, tho, so typically an interpreter will explain this at the beginning of an interaction. At a gig, however, sometimes not all of the performers are appropriately briefed

@@nc4494It’s like petting a working service dog. When they’re interpreting or working, they’re basically an extension of the person or people that need their help. You should treat them as if they either aren’t there or are an extension of that person or group of people. By interacting with them directly while they work, you are interrupting their ability to service the people they’re helping, as well as making their job a lot harder (as you can see with the struggle to communicate when he was trying to ask the interpreters questions themselves). It’s great to be curious and want to learn, but you really should wait for when they’re off duty to ask so the person they’re helping is still receiving all the information they need, such as asking the interpreter that’s sitting the question so she can answer directly and the one working can interpret that for the client or person in need. To bring back the service dog metaphor, it’s like telling a working dog they’re doing great. You really shouldn’t do that because they’re on the job, so they need to focus. Hope this helped

Acknowledging the interpreters in the set itself might have led to adorable chaos but it was truly beautiful to see Gianmarco highlight that not only are they assisting him on stage, he is sharing the stage with them. The spotlight he put on their work and their experiences does that very important job. Adored the running gag of "women being allowed to vote" and the hilarious faces the interpreter pulled as she translated it, as well as the shock and indignation of the other interpreter when he sneaks in "it's the interpreter's fault" in the middle of his affirmations. An amazing trio. Gianmarco is probably the only comedian I would actually want to save up and travel to see. That being said, him coming to India, bleak as the chance may be, would obviously be fantastic.

I've interpreted for comedians before and I just don't anymore 😂 One did the very tired/pedestrian "make the interpreter interpret the moans and sighs of this 'orgasm'" and another time a guy at a Leatherman event caught me off guard so bad (this was the 90s, no prep given) and I completely broke. Bad. Folded double laughing if I'm honest but I felt awful and got it together as quickly as I could and the comedian got massive 👏👏 👏 while I died.

I have no clue how y’all do it!:0 Especially without prep like you mentioned (hopefully it’s gotten better nowadays). I’m a polyglot (which I know it’s not really the same but it’s the closest comparison I have) and I cannot speak another language while someone is speaking, say, english! Translating jokes seems even harder! Do some jokes just not work at all in sign language? I imagine puns don’t, but were you ever hearing a joke you were signing and was like “okay this one is not gonna land with the deaf/hard of hearing people in the audience” just cause the grammar is so different. I apologise if this is a lot, I just find it so awesome that interpreting is not only a thing, but that it’s meant to give deaf people the same experience of an event as everyone else with delivery or energy in the case of concerts.

@@jay-tblYeah it's just an extra step that I don't think should be necessary on the part of the viewer and I imagine is extra difficult if you're working with a screen reader and limited mobility where you have to have the computer read what each button says before you can click it to make whatever changes. Just a bit of a UX concern, so if the person's able to get rid of the need to do that in the first place, it saves everyone a lot of trouble.

i've seen a couple comedians post about this same kind of thing and they like always only have the interpreter in frame, or cut back and forth between the comic and the interpreter and it's really annoying. most of them don't subtitle the stuff either. thanks for clearly editing this to make it accessible but also just like... quality? appreciate all you do, gianmarco.

I'm a court reporter who does some live captioning work, and there's always something so special about getting to work alongside ASL interpreters, because even as I'm writing as close to verbatim as possible, the fact is I can't convey tone and meaning through text. ASL interpreters can. When I've had the chance to ask Deaf clients (mostly I work with late-deafened or hard-of-hearing clients who wouldn't know ASL anyway), many of them like the addition of captions to get what's being said word for word, but no one prefers it over ASL and I completely understand why. I wouldn't either.

I have tried simultaneous interpretation twice, and never again. The amount of focus and mental concentration required is insane. The max a person can go without a break is 30 mins. Hence tag-teaming is essential. And of all interpretations, translating humour is the hardest (even when its written). These people are beyond amazing. It's got to be so difficult for the interpreters but I can definitely see how it would be seriously difficult for Gianmarco too, as he has to try to avoid looking at or interacting with the person repeating everything you're doing literally 2ft away from you. I bet this throws a huge amount of performers off of their game if they aren't properly used to it. I get that it probably breaks some "rules", but it has caused a pretty unique moment of comedy, well done!

i love watching the sign language interpreters so much, i like seeing how they express the emotions of the words a lot. i’m taiwanese and a lot of taiwanese news all features a sign language interpreter at the bottom of the screen and they always express the emotions of the words vividly, very fascinating to see. i also love that things like this are being translated for hard of hearing people so more people can enjoy it!

This is one of the most brilliant things in comedy that I've seen since a lot. It seemed involuntary, not prepared, but man how you treated the situation made me laugh a lot, and also I think and hope that for deaf people it was also better. I wish that more comedians worked alongside with an interpreter for the deaf people's sake but also because a lot of comedy can be created by the interaction on stage!

I worked a a festival recently, where all the bands had sign language interpreters on stage. It was awesome to know deaf people could get more out of the shows, but they also danced and stuff, totally adding to the overall good vibe, really really cool.

Not only are they translating words, but you can see translating the rhythm of a joke. They are just as equally headlining and did an increadible job and credit to Marco for being able to actively incorporate them in creative ways that earned some trickier jokes. All the time i hear people bitching about how comedy is dead and you cant say anything anymore. Bullshit. More people are saying more kinds of things than ever to more people than ever. The mainstream judt has a lower tolerance for active bigotry and cruelty. Comedy is in a great place, more people than ever are participating. That comes with some rot, but a lot of growth too.
