It takes a great deal of heat to melt ice . Boiling water would probably melt the ice quicker . Water is better at containing heat than steal . Even though the steel balls are very hot , they don't have that much heat . Cooling hot metal with water is one of the best ways to cool metal because water has a high heat capacity compared to most materials .
