The last time I was in Australia I was bitten by a Red Back on the back of the leg, stung in the arm pit by a hornet and bitten by a Chihuahua on the finger and while excavating a pipe a woman gave me a camping sleeping bed mat to kneel on that she took out of her shed and when I was kneeling on it I looked and saw the biggest spider I have ever seen in my life on my knee and I am afraid of spiders in general, I screamed and jumped up and the thing landed on my work boot and nearly managed to crawl up my trousers, I think it was a brown bird eating spider. I was driving into Canberra through the national park late at night and as I was changing lanes and even though I knew there was no other traffic around I checked my blind spot and at that moment I heard the passenger make a loud gasp I braced myself as I looked straight ahead again expecting there to be something dangerous ahead of me and he told me a huge Kangaroo had just jumped across the car as I changed lanes and I did not even see it because I was checking my blind spot. But this... whilst being about the size of one... was not like anything i've seen before. It's abdomen was large.. bigger than you normally see in a Huntsman.. and black.. and very shiny, almost reflective... so was the rest of its body... and the mandibles were huge and hooked. I must admit i was a bit nervous just looking at it. Anyway, after some encouragement it jumped onto the broom.. and i took it outside and dropped it in Garden. But in the outside light, it looked even more menacing.. I'm no arachnophobic, but I was very glad to be rid of it... just looked... wrong to me.

If I saw that thing in my tub, I would just have to seal off the bathroom and all open spaces that lead to it with sealant and then concrete. That part of the house is now gone and a plaque shall be hung in it’s memory.

It’s sad as the species was never said as it’s not a Sydney funnel web spider (atrax robustus) but it’s from a completely different genus hadronyche and the species being hadronyche formidabilis. This dubbed mega spider is not even that big for the species. Some of the largest formidabilis can get up to 11cm and they are found from the hunter river in NSW to south east Queensland, not just Sydney
