G'day everyone! Wow, what a transformation! If you want to see how and where I found this seashell, have a look at my shelling channel where I go to the beach and have a silly amount of fun looking for shells. I found this particular one here: • Finding Seashells at L...
This Giant Hairy Triton (Monoplex parthenopeus) was originally inhabited by a snail. That snail created a hairy outer layer on it's shells, called a periostracum, that makes the shell look like it's covered in hair. The hairs are SUPER AWESOME until they dry... then they look crusty! For this one, the hairs were covered in algae too, which I believe is what cause the initial fizzing when I first dropped the shell into the liquid. Anyhoo, a bit of bleach took care of it in no time!
