G'day everyone! Wow, what a transformation! If you want to see how and where I found this seashell, have a look at my shelling channel where I go to the beach and have a silly amount of fun looking for shells. I found this particular one here: • Finding Seashells at L...
This Giant Hairy Triton (Monoplex parthenopeus) was originally inhabited by a snail. That snail created a hairy outer layer on it's shells, called a periostracum, that makes the shell look like it's covered in hair. The hairs are SUPER AWESOME until they dry... then they look crusty! For this one, the hairs were covered in algae too, which I believe is what cause the initial fizzing when I first dropped the shell into the liquid. Anyhoo, a bit of bleach took care of it in no time!

A very spectacular video, Maddie! 😊👍especially when the sink starts to "smoke" while cleaning. And of course the result at the end😊👍👍👍

Hey Mikhail 👋🏻🐌 The "smoke" was so unexpected; they shells do not usually do that!! This Triton turned out really nicely, I should do another one soon! Thanks for watching 🥰

this is fascinating ! how does the bleach not effect the coloring of the shell ?

G'day Alli 👋🏻🏖️ That's a good question, and one that I don't rightly know the best answer to 😅 I think it would remove the shell's colour (and possibly the shell itself?) if the shell spent days or weeks in a pure bleach solution. For just a few hours, or overnight, it seems like it's fine for most seashells 🐚 Not all shells are good for bleaching, but it does wonders for ones with that slimy/hairy outer layer of periostracum! Some shells might need some mineral oil on them afterwards, because the bleach does dry out the shell. Anyhoo, thank you so much for watching this short transformation 🥰

Awesome how Mr. Triton came so clean. I am happy the ocean cleaned my shells for me. This takes a lot of time the more seashells you have to do.. Thank you. XXOO. TRUDY

G'day Trudy 👋🏻💖 He came up looking SO good. I think I put him in a bleach bath for an extra hour with some other shells later on; just to get the last of that pesky periostracum off. He looks amazing now, and the shell's colour is still so deep and lovely. The ocean cleans a lot of my shells too (and they just need a rinse with water) but sometimes, ahhh, they just need a bit more work like this one 😉 cleaning is always a bit of a chore, but the outcome makes it all worth it for ones like these! Thank you so much for watching 🥰

G'day Alison 👋🏻💖 Hahaha yeah, and this was one hiding such a pretty colour and texture under all of that hair!! You're right too, the periostracum on shells does have a smell...I mean, it's not a bad smell like a stinky Strombus, but itd not one that you'd want inside of your house 😂 Thank you for watching this short yet mighty transformation today 🥰

Is that a juvinile one cause it doesent have that thick layer around its lip . Tell me if im wrong

G'day Ari 👋🏻🏖️ You're right! This one doesn't have a thick lip, so it's not fully mature. I think it between juvenile and adult, so when I found it in the original shelling video, I called it "sub-adult" because I have found much smaller juvenile ones with no lips at all 😲 Thanks for watching the clean up 🍰💖

G'day MzPebbles... Or Aunt D? I'm not sure, even since KZbin put it's "handles" in the comments, I've been getting conflicting names in different places for the same people. Hello to you all the same 👋🏻 Thank you so much for watching the transformation today 🐚🥰

@@SandCoffeeRocks Good morning! It is Aunt Di (short for Diane). I have no idea why the MzPebbles showed up! I have noticed it lately though. That literally was from probably 25 years ago! Love from Ohio! 🐚🐚🐚

@@AuntDi2 I think Mz Peebles is adorable, but I'll keep in mind that you're Aunt Di 😁 the reason it's popping up is because of how KZbin is updating it's system so that commenters have unique "handles". It's something that you can change/fix, but you'll need to go into your KZbin/Google settings to pick a new unique handle if it bothers you 😉 there are a few quick tips about how to do this on the internet.
