Hermit crab actually had insane positional awareness to keep his shell always facing towards the mantis shrimp. That and how he kept the distance by doing the ol reach around with his more expendable appendages, you can tell hermit crabs have evolved some clever defensive techniques. He put up such a good showing that this was the first mantis shrimp battle where I felt like the contender deserved some mercy and to fight another day. almost wish he could've done a little damage to the mantis shrimp before his big claw was damaged. But like all these mantis shrimp battles, the fight was over before it started. Hermit crab deserves a plaque or a little flag in the tank though.

Welp, I did my part. Disliked&reported for ANIMAL ABUSE. In the wild the hermit crab wouldn't be something a mantis shrimp would hunt for food. This was more of an "I don't want you in my space" kinda thing. Sure the hermit'll be eaten but that's ONLY because the mantis isn't gonna let something edible go2waste. Getting an alpha animal to destroy some thing that can barely do anything in defense as humans watch for enjoyment. You can say it’s nature all you want. And conservationists will claim all kinda of stupid shit about how “it’s the wild” and “wild animals want to be wild”.. that’s not the case. If it were true some thing like a god damn lion wouldn’t befriend a human. Every animal has the instincts it needs to be wild. Even humans. But as humans we were able to tame the wild side and be some civilized. If any animal can have the capacity for love and friendship in an animal it should eat. (Yes, even wild animals find comradery in prey) it proves they are not beasts. Just the product of an environment that demands certain things to happen. In order to live. There is no proof to suggest wild animals belong in the wild. If they had the option, I’m sure they would choose an easy going and safe place to be fed and taken care of. Over a life of struggles and uncertainty. They just dont have the means to do what we as humans can. If we can learn to love and take care of other species the way a cheetah will sleeps with and protect its human friend. Then the only thing that separates us from them is the ability to verbally understand one another.

What do you think happens in the wild? Ya don't think hermit crabs are eaten? There are many predators that attack & eat hermit crabs. Nearly all wild animals live their entire lives having to deal with being eaten alive. The only exceptions are the top predators, but even they have to contend with fighting over territory, mates, or being eaten themselves by a larger, stronger predator. NO wild animal on land or in the sea has the capacity to think: "Gee, my life sucks". NO animal has A SOUL like human beings do.
