I like that it includes the water packet too! So many emergency meals don't include water, so you need to have running water, or you have to purchase a separate bottle of water. Smart thing to include.
@pwp87379 ай бұрын
since she needed to add water to both the meal and the outer layer to initiate the chemical reaction, the included water was portioned for only one. I personally would have used the included water, sitting in plastic for God only knows how long, for the chemical process and used my own tap water for the food.
@juandenz20089 ай бұрын
@@pwp8737 I thought including the water was weird. People are going to need water to drink anyway, if you haven't got water to drink you've got bigger problems than heating your lunch.

@@juandenz2008 assuming you're in an emergency situation, having packaged water in your emergency kit that doesn't need to potable is absolutely a good thing. It means you're not using water you could be saving for drinking to cook your food. Having been stuck in the Australian outback, waiting six hours for pickup at a broken down car, I'd much rather have my drinking water be used only for drinking.

@@toobreeki8876 If you are in a survival situation where a cup of water is critical, you've got a major problem. You shouldn't be eating anything at all since that would accelerate dehydration and you certainly wouldn't want to eat one of those ultra high in salt meals.
@toobreeki88769 ай бұрын
@@juandenz2008 Man, not all emergency situations mean you have extremely limited water. We had eighty liters of water in the car (as you should traversing the middle of Australia). Having proper meals on hand for when shit hits the fan, while you have plenty of water otherwise, isn't a bad thing. Most shelf-stable calories that have the nutrients you need have high amounts of sodium, because sodium is a preservative. This is to say nothing of the fact that you NEED salt to actually hydrate effectively, especially in high heat where you're sweating a lot.

@tedhodge48309 ай бұрын
Yes, the military has water activated heating elements sealed in a packet in MREs. It looks the same as the one in this kit. You slip the pouch containing the main course inside a little plastic sleeve containing the heating element where you pour the water, and then seal the pouch, and the food in the pouch heats up from the steam. It doesn't work perfectly, it's usually warm on one side, but usually part of the food is still cold or room temperature. We also didn't usually have enough time to let it heat up thoroughly, so we often ate them without heating them up first. The meal kit in this video seems to work better.

6:46 .. This advice is intended for survival meals. One advantage of the vegan meals (for everyone) is they will store longer than dried meat ones, and still be safe to eat, like a year or two past date. With the meat dishes if they are old, heat up the meat part nice and hot (of course), but separately! .. then if the meat smells bad, you still have the vegetable broth, at least.! :) Also note: If you are short on water, you can use plain lake, river or puddle water (filter it through some cloth) can be used (FOR the HEATING water) as only the steam (which is sanitized) will have any chance of contacting the food. Lastly always pour the "Add to food" water in the empty sauce paket first then pour it into the food, this will recover every last calorie and nutrition out of your meal! :)

After the video I looked online for the chemical packs. I have severe food allergies, and have a disability that sometimes puts me in the hospital. I can’t eat anything they serve there, so I bring my own food. This means that I usually end up eating cold meals, unless my family brings in a hot one. At home we grow and preserve most of the food we eat, so I make my own MRE’s and a lot of canned meals. I found both the packs and a reusable container meant to cook in with the chemical packs and that also comes with a cold pack to keep the food fresh until cooking. I ordered both. This will be a game changer, for me, the next time I have to be hospitalized. My husband will be able to drop food off on his way to work, and I can then just heat it up when I am ready to eat. Nutrition is especially important when you are sick, so this solves an important problem.

similar situation, except I'm usually just bedridden and don't have the energy to do much of anything for several days to weeks, and thought buying some of these bowls (or buying self heating packs and making my own when I can, somehow) would be so helpful!!

I wonder if the food absorbs some flavor/chemicals from the heating pad along with the plastic packaging?

I can't see how it couldn't.

Not that I have noticed, but I have only tried one, and I have no frame of reference. At least, it didn't taste of chemicals or plastic

There is nothing in the heating pad to give any flavor

All of these look great. I think i would prefer the soup most of all.

This would be great to keep in the cupboard when your utilities get shut off because of whether conditions you can still have hot meal and the packages can be reused as planters no waste

Emmy, what's the shelf-life of one of these things? Seems cool as an emergency food source, but curious on the longevity :)

I’ve had a couple of these! They’re super salty and lots of preservatives. I don’t remember an exact shelf life but it was at minimum 8montha
@chemistryofquestionablequa62529 ай бұрын
Probably at least a few years. They’re basically an MRE and depending on the country those are usually good for 2-5 years.

Nice to have when you have one of those tiny apartments that don't have a kitchen.
