With "Rat" and "Red" you shouldn't focus on the sound of the "a" or "e" but the sound of the "t" and "d", in dutch T&D have the same sound when they're at the end of a word but in English they're different. Try saying "Red" and pronounce the "d" like you pronounce the first letter of "Different", hope this helps :)

I know this is an old video at this point, but about the small hedges that guests/staff would just phase through: You can use the yellow striped guest barrier pieces to block off small areas that you don't want people to phase through. Just change the color so it blends in with whatever surface. I did that on a giraffe terrace where guests would walk inside of railing or walk through a feed/leaf sale counter
