the squid was not in the least dangerous. the squid was half dead and posted no threat at all. this channel has another video directly after this one where they take the squid out and make it die faster so it doesn't have to suffer as much. these squids (I think this one is a baby) only comes this close to the surface when they're almost dead. looks like this one got attacked by a shark or something.

The squid isn't attacking him -- it's dying, and trying to keep itself afloat. It's just trying to hold on to the board. You can't see it very well in the rest of the video, but its mantle appears quite pale near the beginning, which is possibly a sign of shock. It also looks like the skin might be shredded a little, which would fit with injury; cephalopods' flesh turns white at points of injury, and during blood loss. It's not uncommon for dying giant squid to float up to the surface just before death. Most of the specimens fishermen and scientists find are way above their normal depth -- especially during daytime. Plus, this type of squid-- which must be a young giant squid,, or a ridiculously massive Humboldt-- either way, both are normally known for being aggressive and explosive in their movements -- but this one looks like it can barely move. No wonder it's trying to latch onto the board.

Giant squid live at great depths and in the cold and are usually in the process of dying on the warmer water surface. The squid is already missing part of its tentacle and its movements are weak. This could indicate a previous battle that he will probably not survive. There is no reason to panic or to laugh like a maniac

From a safe perspective with avalible information at hand on your laptop perhaps. The average person in his situation who doesn't dwell too much on marine life will think he is being attacked by a giant, rarely seen squid. He will not have any knowledge about this. Мексика there’s a full video of this. Simply search up surfers and giant squid and you’ll find it. They go to the squid and bring it up to shore to give it a mercy killing as it’s obviously dying. People think a shark or a sperm whale might’ve gotten to it. Either way, they were in no danger. Not from the squid at least. It could barely move. Really in this moment, it’s just shock and amazement at a moment like the squid holding onto the board. So it may be funny/cute or just simply absurd to them, hence the laughing. I myself laugh in situations that are mind blowing to me. Seeing such a large squid like that would be one of them.

+Johan Titulaer Well, I was being sarcastic for the fun of it, although there is a certain degree of truth to it, it was exaggerated through "pirates tales" going from mouth to mouth. No doubt people saw "giant" cephalopods during voyages and told about this "big" creature they saw out at sea, to the point where people probably started assuming "big" = same size as a ship. So when a ship went missing, probably due to a storm, people would of course make up stories that these massive sea creatures was the cause. Similar to how tales of fire breathing dragons exist. Probably some travelers, who came across some Comodo Dragons where a person was bitten by one and died an agonizing death, not long after describing a "burning" feeling from his festering wound. Probably ending up turning into something like _"This BIG four-legged thing with scales killed our friend, with FIRE from its mouth!"._
